Session 38 - Return of the Tideway We picked up on Day 135, after the party had returned to Bar'ellyis and spent the night there again (this time without incident, thankfully). They continued their journey north along the Fey Eye, heading toward the garden of Si'ahl.
Suddenly, a rootclaw mongrel--a large wolf-like creature made from plant material--emerged from the wood, escorted by five underwretches--small little plant like humanoids covered in moss.
The party won fairly easily, especially after Oceana used her Channel Divinity to turn most of them away.
That evening, the party reached the garden of Si'ahl. It's a sprawling port city, not like any that Oceana had seen before. They made a beeline for the port, despite the late hour, hoping to find a ship right away. Most were merchant vessels, and Oceana was surprised to see some foreign ships in dock, as well, including some Celestian ones. As luck would have it, the Tideway was also present. However, she was told by the crew that Pisces was not present; he's on shoreleave at the local inn.
So the party headed back into town proper, bought some seaweed for Jasper at a local food stall (one of the ingredients he needs to make his new spell), and then headed to The Orca's Tail, the inn Pisces was at. Speaking with him, Oceana explained she needed a ride to Maplewood. Pisces was skeptical, as Ravenite warships often patroled the Saltish Sea. He couldn't do it for less than a thousand pink coral shards. Oceana immediately agreed, which made Pisces worry he asked for too little. Oceana decided to pay him 2,000 pink coral shards instead.
Oceana was eager to wait several days, but Pisces told her they were ready to leave in the morning if she wanted. So she ordered her retainers to stay behind in town, giving them shards for their inn rooms and food (2,500 pink shards) and asked them to send a letter to her mother to let her know they reached Si'ahl and to wait two weeks for her, then return home if she had not returned by then.
She then returned to the market to buy a disguise kit, figuring it will come in handy while in Ravenite lands.
My Notes This session was 2h.
The encounter with the rootclaw mongrel was pretty disappointing. It was another homebrewed creature I picked up from Ginny Di. But my disappointment wasn't in how easily the party thwarted it. I sort of expected that. This is 5E, after all, and Oceana is blinged out in some pretty powerful gear.
No, what bummed me is that while I was describing the creature, Horizon interrupted to observe it was from Ginny Di. I was surprised and assumed she guessed that because it was another fey creature, and Di does like her fey creatures. But no, Horizon said it was because my descriptions are never that good.
It's true I have been very, very busy of late. Work has been really kicking my ass, and my depression has never been worse. It's all I can do to just barely keep up with this game, and I admit to cutting a lot of corners just to have a session each week. And descriptions are one of those things I don't really have time to sit down and write, so I tend to improvise on the fly. It still was pretty hurtful to hear.
She also complained after the fight that I 'lost all enthusiasm' and I suppose that's true, as well. Part of me wonders if I should put the game on hiatus so I can put some better work into it. But on the other hand, I also feel I should finish it as quickly as I can, before I run out of time. I only have until the current lease runs out in September to end this game, or it will be left unfinished forever.
In any case, the only other thing I have to comment on was a part of the conversation between Oceana and Pisces. He mentioned that the Ravenites had been more active lately on the coast, and there were rumors they were planning a big attack somewhere. But he ruled out Si'ahl, as it was too large and well-defended. “That could never happen.” Just a bit of funny dramatic irony.
Anyway, I'll try and get XP up tomorrow.

What I actually said is that you are never that detailed or you never describe things like that. I never mentioned anything about it being good or bad. I was simply making an observation. It wasn't my intention to be hurtful though, so I apologize that it was.

It's true, though. My descriptions are inadequate. The whole reason I started running this game (and Wyld Times before it) was to see if I still had what it took to DM in a face-to-face game, and I think I have my answer. I don't remember it being this hard, and this much of a struggle each week. But maybe I'm just getting too old for this sort of thing now, I don't know. XP is as follows: Oceana Poole (Ancient Paladin 7) Defeating Rootclaw Mongrel and Underwretches (x7) - 920 XP Convincing Pisces to take her to Maplewood - 100 XP TOTAL: 1,020 XP That brings her to a full total of 31,502 XP, meaning she needs 2,498 XP to level up. Wyldfyre (Berserker Barbarian 6) Defeating Rootclaw Mongrel and Underwretches (x7) - 920 XP TOTAL: 920 XP This gives him a total of 21,828 XP, meaning he needs 1,172 XP to level up. Selena (Dream Druid 6) N/A TOTAL: 0 XP This gives her a total of 16,593 XP, meaning she needs 6,407 XP to level up. Torrenta (Nature Cleric 6) Defeating Rootclaw Mongrel and Underwretches (x7) - 920 XP TOTAL: 920 XP This gives her a total of 14,934 XP, meaning she needs 8,066 XP to level up. Lement (Horizon Walker Ranger 5) Defeating Rootclaw Mongrel and Underwretches (x7) - 920 XP TOTAL: 920 XP This gives him a total of 13,099 XP, meaning he needs 871 XP to level up. Hardrock (Samurai Fighter 4) N/A TOTAL: 0 XP This gives her a total of 2,851 XP, meaning she needs 3,649 XP to level up. Jasper (Diviner Wizard 4) Defeating Rootclaw Mongrel and Underwretches (x7) - 920 XP TOTAL: 920 XP This gives him a total of 6,955 XP, meaning he reaches level 5! He gains +5 HP, +1 proficiency, and gains 2 third level spell slots. He learns Tongues and Sending. He also adds Air Bubble to his spellbook.

Session 39 - Need A Bigger Boat We picked up on Day 136, with the Tideway sailing the Quilsha Sound toward the Saltish Sea. Oceana started the morning by checking on Jasper and the hot air balloon, making sure the latter was safe. Jasper suggested they continue to carry it on the island, until they are close to the Cloud Isle Grove. Fortunately, it's said to be only about a day's travel from the southern shore.
Oceana then checked on Torrenta, who was still sullen and withdrawn, and would not speak with Oceana on whatever was bothering her, despite her needling. She then checked on Wyldfyre, who was mostly bored as the entire crew of the Tideway were men, and there was nothing around to fight. He looked forward to cracking some Ravenite skulls, though, once they encountered some. Oceana asked him if he knew why Torrenta was so quiet. Wyldfyre didn't know, but figured it was probably a good thing; she talked too much in his opinion.
Oceana then visited Lement. She asked him about Torrenta, but he didn't know anything, either. She then asked him to keep an eye on her. Lement agreed, and walked off to do just that, but Oceana quickly stopped him and clarified she meant later. She then asked him what his plans were once they finished saving the world. Lement figured he'd settle down with Oceana after that. Oceana, annoyed, once again pointed out that Lement was not in the running to be her husband, but he didn't seem to pay attention.
Changing the subject, Oceana asked if Lement would mind getting swapped out later for someone else. He passive-aggressively pointed out that as a Rogue Spirit Hunter, he was best suited to fight spirits, and they are very likely to encounter some in the next grove. But yeah, sure, he'd be fine with it. Oceana tried to reassure him and say maybe she'd swap out Jasper instead. Lement said that was a good idea, as Jasper was not experienced with the groves, and not even Elonnori, and also, was not committed to the cause; he only joined to satisfy his scientific curiosity. Oceana pointed out that the only reason Lement joined 'the cause' was to marry her. Lement felt that wanting to save the world so she would marry him is still the same as wanting to save the world.
Teasing him a bit, Oceana wondered how Lement would feel if Jasper were a marriage candidate. Lement went into a bit of a rant at that, wondering if it was actually true and growing increasingly paranoid. When Oceana commented on how tall Jasper was, Lement started standing on his toes to appear taller.
Oceana then asked if he considered Ashel a romantic rival. Lement dismissed the idea, claiming Ashel was nothing but a vagrant and a scoundrel. Oceana claimed he was actually born into nobility, and Lement countered then he was a fool, too, to throw all of that away for something as trivial as 'freedom.'
After that, Oceana sought out Pisces. The two spoke on what would happen if they ran into any Ravenite scout ships, and brainstormed ideas on what to say if they weren't immediately hostile.
The following morning, Day 137, Oceana woke up to the ship lurching back and forth and the sound of thunder in the distance and rain hitting the deck above. She went above deck to find a storm moving in. She asked Pisces how to help, but he assured her that he and his men could handle things. She gathered up the party and took them to the bow to keep a look out. Lement held up his shovel to try and shield Oceana from the rain, but it made a poor umbrella.
Lement then noticed some movement in the sky. It looked like a tail snaking between some clouds. He speculated it was a dragon eel, a very dangerous creature that could fly when it rained. Sure enough, a massive draconic eel that was slithering in the sky began to approach. Lightning struck it, but it didn't seem to mind. It moved straight for the ship.
The fight is a brutal one, and a difficult one. Oceana and Wyldfyre are at a large disadvantage, as the eel stays out of melee range, instead floating ten feet above them. The eel had a powerful lightning breath and blasted Oceana with It, nearly knocking her out in one hit. One by one, her companions fell in the fight, until only she and Jasper were left. Oceana made a last ditch attempt to jump and grab the dragon and climb up on top of it, only to fall to its bite immediately after. Jasper was knocked to 1 HP but his final barrage of magic missiles just barely managed to slay the creature. It crashed into the ocean so heavily that it knocked the Tideway away, out of the storm.
While the crew tended to the party's wounds, Pisces scratched his head and wondered why so many crazy things seem to happen whenever Oceana is on board.
My Notes This session was 2h, 10m.
The conversation with Lement was a fun one to roleplay out.
The battle was quite the nail-biter. We came 1 HP away from a TPK. It seems Oceana is at a severe disadvantage when fighting flying enemies. Probably good to know, considering we're heading to an air temple next.
Anyway, I'll try and get XP up tomorrow.

Session 40 - Prince of the Sea We picked up on Day 138, the following day after the big fight with the dragon eel. The Tideway had just entered the Saltish Sea, when Oceana noticed some bodies floating in the water up ahead. She told Pisces and he steered the vessel toward them. She and Wyldfyre then climbed into one of the lifeboats and rowed over to them. There were twelve total--eleven were sahuagin, but the last one was a triton. The sahuagin were all dead, but the triton still lived. However, he was badly wounded, severely fatigued and poisoned, as well. Oceana used her innate Lesser Restoration to cleanse the poison after pulling him on board.
Once back on the ship, she had Torrenta look him over. She said he just needed to rest for awhile. Oceana took him down to the barracks and watched over him for a few hours, until he finally came to. He was eager to return to the sea, but was still quite weak and couldn't even stand under his own power, so Oceana convinced him to stay at least a little while.
The triton revealed his name was Prince Neptune, and he explained his unit was ambushed by the sahuagin and he was the only survivor. It was just another of many battles in the never-ending war of the depths. Oceana had no idea what war he was talking about, which surprised him.
Neptune explained that his people have been fighting a terrible menace beneath the waves for centuries now, holding back the tides of darkness from overwhelming the surface world. They all took an oath to fight this enemy, and took that oath very seriously. He was a little put off that apparently nobody knew about it, but brushed it off as just doing his duty anyway. Oceana also learned he was heir, as his older sister died in the fighting.
Oceana told him about her own adventures, and he remarked how similar they were--sacrificing everything to follow their duties and obey their oaths. Oceana compared Neptune to Ashel, in that they seemed the exact opposite. Ashel ran away from his duties. Neptune pointed out that in doing so, Oceana was forced to take them up. Freedom is never free, and by sacrificing his duty to obtain freedom, he also sacrificed Oceana's freedom. In the same way that the tritons sacrificed their freedom to fight in the undersea war, so that the surfacers had the freedom to not worry about it.
Oceana tries to excuse herself several times, but Neptune asks her to keep him company during the night, and she eventually relents.
The next day, Day 139, Oceana woke up and found Neptune was gone. A note was left behind thanking her for her help and her company, and expressing a hope that somehow, against all odds, they might meet again some day. Maybe even fight together, side by side.
Oceana headed up to the upper deck and found the place in chaos. Sailors were rushing to and fro as Pisces, at the wheel, shouted orders at them. She realized that a Ravenite war ship had spotted them and was fast approaching. They were trying to outrun it, but it was far too fast. Oceana counted somewhere around a hundred warriors on board, too. It would easily overwhelm the much smaller Tideway, which was built for travel and cargo transport, not battle.
The party prepared for a boarding action. Oceana first had Jasper cast Sending to contact Neptune and ask him to return and help. Once the war ship caught up, a dozen warriors boarded and the party started fighting them off. As warriors fell, more replaced them, but the party managed to hold the line as more and more warriors tried to board.
After about the third round, Neptune appeared, shooting out of the water and landing on the warship's deck. He started to fight off more Ravenites, but after about two or three rounds, he went down and the party lost track of him.
It was only around the tenth round that the Ravenites were thinning out enough to question if this was a good idea. A druid shaman appeared and ordered a retreat. The ship pulled away, and the party mopped up the last few still on the Tideway. Oceana then Misty Stepped to their deck, grabbed Neptune's body and leapt overboard with it.
After her companions fished her back out, she tried healing him and was shocked to find he was dead.
My Notes This session was 3h, 15m.
The scenes with Neptune were fun, but I don't know if Horizon enjoyed them. Oceana seemed very eager to get away from him, and he had to basically beg her to stay and keep him company several times. So maybe not? But they had some interesting conversations about the nature of duty versus freedom, which is a theme I've been leaning into a lot this arc.
The Ravenites weren't hard, but there were a ton of them. This was actually a possible encounter I had planned for my Overmorrow game, but after the Ravenites wound up in a war, I swapped the war ship for a scout ship. Anyway, I believe the party managed to defeat over 60 of the 100 warriors on board, so that was pretty good.
I wasn't expected her to call back Neptune. I had assumed he'd return to his people instead. He fell in the fifth round of combat, I think, so I'm not sure why Oceana was so surprised he did not survive by the tenth round. Horizon felt his death wasn't Oceana's fault, though, because he could have chosen to ignore her call for help.
My notes included a bit on how Neptune would react if Oceana brought up Cyles and the story he told Oceana that was remarkably similar to this scenario. But she never did, because Horizon actually forgot that whole story. Oh, well.
I remember thinking at the one hour point that there should be plenty of time to start and finish the war ship fight, but boy was I wrong. We actually went over an hour long to finish the fight. Horizon was so flummoxed on what to do about Neptune's death (Torrenta did not have Revivify prepared, and even if she did, she had no diamonds, and even if she had, Elonnori don't believe in raising the dead; only in reincarnation), we decided to just end things there.
Anyway, I'll try and get XP up tomorrow.

Today marks the one year anniversary of this game. And we're now about 4/5ths through it. I'm not sure how much longer it will last, but I'm pretty sure I can wrap it up before the end of the summer when I have to move.

Session 41 - Water Walking We picked up still on Day 139. Oceana held an impromptu burial at sea for Neptune, and the Tideway moved on. That evening, the ship approached the shores of Maplewood. Scouting around, Pisces found a sea cave to dock the ship in, so they could hide from any further Ravenite patrols until the party returned. Pisces noted this would be useful if he ever needed to return here again, although he highly doubted that would ever happen. The party rested for the night.
The following day, Day 140, they set out again. Oceana cast Find Steed to summon a horse to pull the wagon carrying the hot air balloon. Later that day, they came across a river about fifty feet wide and a good ten feet deep. Oceana sent Lement to scout out both sides of the river, but he finds no bridges or crossings nearby.
Oceana then had Torrenta cast Speak with Animals to talk to some nearby raccoons, who revealed that Ravenites often cross the river with their druidic magic to part the river. That, however, was currently beyond any of the party's abilities.
Oceana cycled through numerous ideas including building a raft (but cutting down trees might be frowned upon by Elonna), pushing over a big tree to make a bridge (same problem), and building a raft made of rotten wood (but would it work?). Eventually she decided on having Torrenta cast Water Walk on everyone, then the party would just pick up and slowly carry the wagon together over the river.
This plan seemed to work well enough, until they got about half-way across the river. Then four creatures swam up to them. They resembled sea otters, but were much larger, with some kind of rime growing on their fur and glowing blue eyes--coldsnap riverlings, icy fey creatures that were as cute as they were deadly.
In order to fight them, the party would have to let go of the wagon. So each character would let go on their turn, attack, then return to the wagon to grip it again. Well, that was the idea. It became clear that Lement was not actually lifting, just miming it. Likewise, Wyldfyre and Oceana both let go entirely to fight, so it was largely left to Torrenta and Jasper to keep the wagon aloft.
The coldsnap riverlings were vulnerable to fire, so it wasn't much of a fight after all, despite their frost breath attacks. Once they were all melted, the party resumed carrying the wagon across. On the other side, Oceana healed up Lement a bit, but did not want to take a short rest, so the party pressed onward.
Consequently, when they reached the coordinates of the Cloud Isle (it was visible above them, barely a speck in the sky), they found a group of ten Ravenite warriors led by a druid waiting for them. Having Torrenta cast Tongues on her quickly, Oceana somehow managed to talk the Ravenites down. They did not trust her in 'their' temple, however, and insisted on accompanying her at least up to the entrance, to make sure she didn't pull anything funny.
My Notes This session was 2h, 10m.
Wow, after over three months, we're back. We had to take something of a long hiatus there, partly so I could catch up but also because Horizon was distracted with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
Anyway, we spent at least half of the session just on trying to find a way to ford the river. I honestly had not expected it would be that hard. But then again, we were pretty out of practice after all of this time. Horizon had forgotten pretty much all of her characters' abilities and spells, so there was a lot of shuffling around character sheets.
I had not expected the Ravenite encounter to end peacefully. Oceana made some good rolls, though. We'll see how that plays out.
Anyway, I'll try and get XP up tomorrow.
