Not a lot of XP, but there was no combat and everyone kind of gave up in the end, so...
Here are my notes for the chapter. Keep in mind I wrote them back when I thought this game was doing well:
Title and Theme
The title of the chapter, "City Of" was a reference to the pilot episode of Angel, which I drew a lot of inspiration from for this game, which in itself was a reference to "City of Angels" the nickname for Los Angeles, California. Maliaka is a city of fiends, however, in a bit of a twist.
Help the Helpless
To build off what I said above, the chapter included multiple Angel references. Only someone who watched the show a lot would catch them all. Good luck finding them all, if you are so inclined to do so!
Gamblers
The gamblers were a random encounter. I mostly used them to introduce the Ruby Queen, should the party ever decide to look into that place later on. Could be a place to find some work. Or could be a place to find some trouble. Also, might make some coin gambling, if they're feeling lucky.
Uncomfortable Feeling
The students and the goodwives were random encounters, like the gamblers. In both cases, they were approached by one of the sisters and became uneasy. I'm using the Reaction mechanics to determine how an NPC reacts to meeting a PC for the first time. In both cases, I got Cautious but with Ellasandra (thanks to her whopping +7 due to her high CHA), she got Friendly which is why the students seemed to calm down around her. Anyway, like the gamblers, their main purpose was to drop some information. The students mentioned another student had gone missing. The goodwives gossiped about Blackstaff, the mage who owns the tower in the Academic Sector.
ACAB
The ONK are just great, right? Aren't they the best???
Politics, Politics, Politics
The political rally was a random encounter, and a chance to introduce some characters who may become important later on. I had not expected Tukgruff to get involved. If he had not turned invisible when he did, the ONK would have arrested him and carted him off, and I can't stress how bad that would have been for him.
Just Say No
The drug deal was also a random encounter, but a chance to introduce the concept of soulbliss, which also may become important some day.
Genius Puzzle
I really did think for sure that Nerisse would have solved that puzzle; what a twist that the dice said otherwise. I won't go into too much detail on what would have happened if she had solved it, just in case it becomes relevant again later, but it would have been interesting, to say the least.
Stalling Out
I really don't understand what went wrong. I put so much effort and time into this game. I've spent months coming up with new quests and missions, fleshing out NPCs and the city itself. I had a lot of high hopes for this game. And it just sort of fell apart. Before even one chapter was finished, too.
Kulak Barrister at Law
Fun fact, but I intended the law offices of Kulak to be something of a major dungeon of sorts. It was kind of meant as an end game thing, so having a PC try to sneak in alone, at level 1, was the equivalent of trying to do the same to the Big Bad's lair. Let's just say, if Tukgruff had gone into the basement, there was a very high chance he would never come back out.
