"The docks should be locked down," Zesk points out. The group heads there, however, and finds that not only is it unguarded, but the gate is unlocked, as well.

"Apparently, it wasn't a problem for the equalists," Ladonna says softly. She carefully moves to the gate, then suddenly stops. "They aren't going to make this easy," she says. "So maybe someone should look for traps. I'm not sure they had the time to set one, but you never know."

"I don't understand, where is the guard?" Zesk asks. "How could the Equalists have come this way?"
"Maybe they had help from the inside," Finbul suggests.
Unakite looks over the area, and shrugs. "If I see a trap, I'll let you know. Unless it would be funnier not to, that is. This area looks clear, though."

Ladonna moves past the gate, and starts looking for clues as to where the equalists could have gone. "It is possible they had someone on the inside. This place is a fortress otherwise."

Over by the water, Ladonna finds a lone, woman's shoe. It's far too nice to have belonged to a peasant.

"Over here," Ladonna calls the others. She picks up the shoe and shows it to the others. "Looks like they took a boat. Does that mean that the trail went cold?" she asks.

"Not necessarily," Sidhanar replies. "As long as we walk alongside the river, we can pick up their trail again wherever they disembark. The only thing is, we need to determine which direction they went. West or east?"

"Well, where does the west lead to exactly? What does the east lead to?" Ladonna asks.

"The west leads to the capital," Zesk answers. "To the east, if you follow it long enough, it will take you to Darkwater, then Deltan, and finally out to the ocean."

"Moat likely they would be between here and the capital since they have tried to kidnap a noble before," Ladonna says. "So we will head that way."

"You are referring to the incident with Countess Goddard of Foxshire?" Zesk asks her.

"That's the one," Ladonna says. "But I hear that one failed."

"Well, in a manner of speaking," Zesk replies. "They were successful in kidnapping her, but they were tracked down and the countess was recovered shortly after. The entire cell was executed as a warning. But alas, it seems the warning fell on deaf ears, if another cell is doing the same thing now."
"But only a baron's daughter...kind of a downgrade from a countess," Finbul observes.

"They think she is a countess though," Ladonna points out to Finbul. "Lady Helen and Countess Joy were spending some time together, getting to know one another apparently," she explains. "Joy went to go get something, and that is when the equalists attacked and took Helen."

"Well, she will be a countess, some day," Finbul corrects. "She's just the heir now."
"I admit, I am surprised by how informally you refer to Lady Joy and Lady Helen," Zesk says, in reference to Ladonna referring to them as 'Joy' and 'Helen.' "You have climbed the social ladder much faster than I would have guessed."
"Regardless, I'm not sure I follow your reasoning in why they would have gone west," Sidhanar says. "Would you mind explaining to me why you think so?"
