"Yes," Lilliam says, a bit bluntly. After another moment, she adds, "You see, I often have trouble connecting with the service and the people there. Honestly, I sometimes felt my presence was somewhat jarring, and that I was doing the more devout members of the congregation. If you believe that having one elf sit awkwardly in the corner helps the sermon come together, I'll happily come."

"If you believe the only point of the sermon is to sit quietly there like a piece of furniture, then no wonder you see no value in it," Winters says coolly. "The point of the sermon is to listen and learn from it, to hear the wisdom of Gonto and apply it to your life. Not sit awkwardly, lost in your own thoughts, until the hour has passed."

"The days I don't attend services are usually spent in reflection on how I can improve myself so that I can help my community," she explains. "And I would agree that simply sitting in during the service lost in your own thoughts isn't conductive to the point of the service. One needs to learn how to apply the teachings of Gonto to their life."

"Well, I'm glad someone is paying attention to my sermons," Winters says. "But you should work on self-improvement before or after the service, or on another day. It's no excuse to miss it entirely. And what of you, Mister Marche?"
"Ah, yes, well, Sadduce, you see, I've just been very busy..," Jonas stumbles.
"Busy, are you? I thought you were unemployed," she retorts curtly.
Jonas hems and haws, unable to articulate a response.

"He has been spending time trying to improve himself as well," Ladonna says, trying to elegantly clean up her father's answer. "Gonto teaches of the importance of family, and unfortunately my father and I have become a little more estranged than we should be. Many of those missed services were spent with us spending a little more time together," she explains. "But, you are right of course. We shouldn't miss services, so we both will strive to do better."

"Uh, yes, exactly," Jonas says, going along with it and nodding eagerly.
"Hmph," Winters scoffs slightly. "I understand. Things are difficult on your own. But I would say that's all the more reason to attend the sermons."
"Yes, of course," Jonas says apologetically. "We will both be there, every Rockday, I promise you."

"It's not that I ignore the sermon," Lillian explains. "I hear Gonto's wisdom, I simply...have trouble applying it. Personally, I identify much more with the teachings of Octhanus." And Crizza, she thinks, not eager to say that one out loud.

Fannah actually flinches, like Lillian had just slapped her across the face. Her glasses even become crooked, and she's forced to straighten them while she composes herself. "Well...at least you are honest about your blasphemy. No wonder your worth ethic is so...lacking. All Octhanians care about is what feels good, not what needs to be done to better themselves and society. It's an inherently selfish faith. I'm disappointed that you would give in to such weakness."

Ladonna looks at Lillian with wide eyes as she admits she follows Octhanus. It isn't that Ladonna really cares, but saying that to the Sadduce is...well it certainly isn't a good thing. At this point, there isn't much that Ladonna can say to fix what Lillian has said. "Well," she says. "Perhaps if you attended more services, you would have an easier time applying Gonto's teachings to yourself," she finally says.

Fannah just shakes her head and lets it drop. Lillian definitely gets the feeling this is going to have consequences down the road.
Meanwhile, a middle-aged human couple take the seats to the party's left, and are in the middle of a conversation.
"You heard about Lohman's Blades, didn't you?"
"They keep pressing eastward, right towards us. Surely the Count will keep them from entering Solanshire, right?"
"I hope so. I heard they actually occupied a small village, abusing the locals and taking whatever food and supplies they wanted. They were eventually driven out, but...no telling how much damage was done."
"How scary. Between them and the Equalists, sometimes it feels like this country is falling apart. Hopefully the queen finally steps in and does something about it."

"Excuse me," Ladonna says, looking over to the couple. "What village did they occupy?"

The couple are startled by the interruption, but after regaining their bearings, one says, "I believe it was Ransome Village, in the county of Deepridge." Ladonna would know that Deepridge is northwest of here, about 300 miles away or so.

"Hmm, that is fairly close," Ladonna says softly.

"Right?" asks the other. "This Lohman fellow is nothing more than a petty warlord. Their just bandits that are well armed, if you ask me. If the queen's knights still patrolled the roads, they'd never have even made it this far."
"Solanshire is safe and stable," the other one points out. "Even if they do make it this far, they wouldn't dare attack Hart. It's too well defended."

"Hmm, I wouldn't rule out people with a cause," Ladonna says. "They will pretty much do anything, even if it seems pointless."
