Ladonna Damon nods. "Yep, a horse but with wings, like a bird's. And yeah, they had a couple of bases, and we divided our forces to strike both at once. It was a surprise attack, so they never saw it coming. We would have easily captured Jherek, had he and Katya not fled on that flying horse."
Lillian Mereida shakes her head. "Not good enough. I want it in writing, signed and notarized by whoever is necessary to make it legally binding."

Lillian frowns. "That...may take longer than we have to spare. You're quite paranoid, aren't you? I can't be any help if you don't trust me."

"Which direction did they fly off towards?" Ladonna asks.

Ladonna "Toward the west, but we lost sight of them pretty quickly after that," Damon admits.
Lillian "I'm sorry, but those are my conditions," Mereida says firmly. "This is my legacy, after all. Katya is my only heir. If something happens to her, the family name is over. I am too old to have another child."

Lillian nods solemnly. "Very well. But if you refuse to help, I will deal with Katya as I see fit. Even if you--or she--disagrees."

"As long as my conditions are fulfilled, you have my word I will cooperate in any way that I can," Mereida promises. "As soon as I have it in writing."

Lillian sighs and finds a piece of paper, scribbling "I, Lillian [one name only], promise to return Katya, Merida's Daughter, from the Wyld Boys, releasing her from whatever coercion she is under, achieving full amnesty for any crimes comitted with them, and to find her a suitable husband, in return for the cooperation of her mother, Merida Waelnod, in finding her." She signs her name at the bottom, hands it to Merida, and says "Sign here."

"What is west of here?" Ladonna asks thoughtfully.

Ladonna Damon shrugs. "Lots of things. Assuming they continued going west, anyway, and didn't circle around or change direction once they were out of sight. The point is, they can't be tracked through the air, so we have no leads on where they might be now."
Lillian "Err, Lillian, do you realize what you have just done?" Panola asks nervously. "And what the consequences will be if you fail?"
Mereida quickly takes the paper, though, signs her name and hands it over to Ninda. "Be a dear, make sure this is brought to the council and notarized immediately."
"Yes, m'lady," Ninda says with a bow, then departs with the paper in hand.

"I'm going to need to find a way to lure Jherek back here," Ladonna says with a sigh. "And I have no idea how to do that."

"I clearly don't, because I didn't intend for that to be notarized!" Lillian almost shrieks. She's absolutely furious. "NINDA, COME BACK HERE!" she shouts. "You know, I--when you said 'have it in writing,' I thought you were backing down on the whole 'notarized' nonsense. Well, clearly, I don't understand the proper terminology for making contracts!" She says, stamping her foot. "And now, I have no choice but to forcefully tear that up, because you could easily just go to the council behind my back and get me indicted for breach of contract if I don't, in the likely event that I fail to meet every one of those conditions!" She rants. "This is absurd."

Ladonna "That's even assuming he's still in the county, or even the country," Damon points out. "He could be miles from here by now, maybe even on another continent."
Lillian "I made my conditions quite clear," Mereida says calmly. "In writing and notarized. Unless you are admitting you never intended to actually see it through and keep your end of the bargain? Which is all the more reason a contract is needed."
Panola adds, "Because you signed your name to it, you are legally bound to fulfill the contract. If you don't, she can have you arrested, sold into serfdom or any number of things. That's standard Tardiff law--never put your name on any contract unless you are absolutely certain you can deliver on what's promised. Even worse, you agreed to make this Katya person return home and marry someone else. What if she refuses to cooperate?"
Despite Lillian's screaming, Ninda does not return. Finbul goes after her, and a few moments later returns. "She's really hoofing it back to town!" he warns.

Lillian buries her face in her hands. "I was not aware that any scrap of paper with a signature on it was a contract. I thought having it notarized would take weeks of paper pushing. I thought Merida rescinded some of her terms when she did no such thing. I am a fool and deserve whatever fate begets me." She sighs and tells Merida, "Well, you have your contract. My soul is yours. Will you assist me?"

"I'm not sure they would have left completely, even though it would be the smart thing to do," Ladonna admits. "Did you search their base camps?" she asks Damon.

Ladonna "We did," Damon says. "Rounded up every person we could take alive, and every bit of the stolen goods they had gathered up over the years."
Lillian "Hmph, so in other words, you were hoping to take advantage of an old woman with a fake contract, is that it?" Mereida asks, arching a brow. "You should not underestimate anyone of the Waelnod family. But yes, now that you are bound by law to make sure my Katya is kept safe and returned home, I will help. What do you need?"
