"We are in town to investigate a murder that happened a while back," Ladonna explains. "With Barone Gerardo Amodeo," she adds. "I hear he has been here multiple times to ask about the murder of his merchant, and of Jherek."

"Indeed. It served the town well during the Battle of Buho, twenty years ago."

Ladonna "He has," Sennah answers. "Although why would you be helping him, I wonder?"
Lillian "Oh? Buho attacked Hart twenty years ago?" Amodeo asks, puzzled. "I had not heard of this. What happened?"

"...no, goblins attacked Buho. You were referring to Hart's walls? My mistake."
[OOC: Yeesh, I can never figure out what people are talking about from context clues....]

"Yes, I noticed Hart has quite a few defenses," Amodeo continues. "Not just the walls, but the moat, as well. I imagine there are other defenses, too; for a place that well-defended, it makes sense."
(OOC: If it helps, Buho doesn't have any walls. Just a hedge.)

"Indeed? You haven't been noting that for any reason, have you?" Lillian teases.
[OOC: Duly noted]

"I just find it interesting, is all," Amodeo says. "Perhaps the one thing my own nation could learn from Tardiff. Our own defenses tend to be rather lackluster."

"Yet all the walls in the world will not help if the men defending it are lackluster," Lillian points out. "Surely Calabria's soldiers are skilled enough to make up for it...?"

"Certainly," Amodeo responds. "But Calabria puts more effort into its naval defenses. We protect ourselves with our powerful and large navy, and rely less on things like castles and walls."

"I actually asked," Ladonna says. "My father has set up a marriage for me, and due to some unfortunately events the wedding has been delayed," she explains. "So, if I am able to help the Barone, or at least help him enough that he doesn't continue visit both Buho and Hart, then I will be able to be married within the walls of Hart," she explains.

"Well, if you can ensure this is his last visit here, that will be wonderful news as far as I'm concerned," Sennah says.

"Has Calabria struggled with ground assaults in history?" Lillian asks.

"Ground forces often have difficulty, because of the many rivers in Calabria," Amodeo explains. "Collapse the bridges, and any ground force is stranded or at the very least, slowed down considerably."

"Leaving the bridges an unfortunate casualty of war," Lillian jokes. "Calabria is well defended by land and sea...pray that its enemies never discover the secrets of taming griffons."

Amodeo chuckles. "Ah, you refer to the Ruarans and their air cavalry? Calabria, like Tardiff, is not concerned with them launching a direct invasion. Were the Ruarans to attack any human nation, the other human nations would quickly band together to put them down. Indeed, the last thing the Ruarans would want, I am sure, is to create a sense of alliance between the human nations by giving them a common enemy. They prefer to spy and use subterfuge to cause distrust between us. It's more long term, but...that is their way."
