Evil never rests and neither should the forces of good. It has been one year since the end of the War of the Lance, and while the forces of the Whitestone Council are still battling the remnants of the Dragon Highlord armies, a new force is arising. In the area around Throtl rumors spread of a forgotten book that can unlock a long-forgotten secret. With limited forces in the area, the Whitestone Council must look to others to help unlock the mystery and prevent an ancient legend from being unleashed on Krynn.
===============
This is a 5E game set in the world of Dragonlance, based on the old Goldbox DOS computer game of the same name, released back in 1990. This is a series of modules, the first being The Mystery of the Lost Patrol. The others have not yet been released, but my hope is that due to the slow nature of pbp gaming, by the time this module is finished, the second one will be out. And so on.
If you aren't familiar with the games, the basic premise is as follows. It has been one year since the defeat of the Dragonarmies at Neraka by the newly proclaimed Heroes of the Lance. During this time, the areas east of Solamnia are in turmoil as peacekeeping forces from the Whitestone Council are patrolling the area. These forces have created outposts near Throtl, Gargath, and Jelek, to help restore peace in the area. A Knight of the Rose, Sir Karl Gaardsen, is being dispatched to this area to check things out after rumors of attacks and other dangers. Your PC is coming along, although why is up to you. Maybe you just want to help out. Maybe you have a personal reason for looking into this. Maybe you're just a sellsword, looking to earn some coin.
01. What game system are you running (D&D, Call of Cthulu, Palladium, GURPS, etc.), and if applicable what edition (Original, Classic, Revised, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, etc.)?
D&D 5E
02. What 'type' or variant of game will it be (i.e. "Shadow Chasers" or "Agents of Psi" for d20 Modern)? What is the setting for the game (eg. historic period, published or homebrewed campaign setting, alternate reality, modern world, etc.)?
Dragonlance, Fourth Age (just a year after the War of the Lance ended)
03. How many Players are you looking for?
Five players is optimal. Preferred posting rate is at least once a day, or failing that, at least every three days.
04.What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)?
Level 1. Characters will automatically level up at certain points, instead of earning XP.
05. How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?
Basic starting gear and gold.
06. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes?
Keep in mind the setting and the timeline. Because this game takes place in the time period when DL was still in 1E, some of the 5E classes need a bit of modifying to fit in. Read more here.
07. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species?
As this is Dragonlance, there are no half-orcs, drow, tieflings, dragonborn or halflings. However, there are some unique races, like kender, gully dwarves, minotaurs, draconians, etc. You can find 5E conversions of these races with Tasslehoff's Pouches of Everything (download here, for free). Some races don't exist yet in this timeline (like afflicted kender) or haven't been discovered yet (like Tarmak humans). Also, I'd recommend steering clear of races that primarily fought on the side of Evil in the war (minotaurs, goblins, draconians, dark dwarves), as the memory of the war is still fresh and a lot of locals might form a mob with pitchforks if they see one of these races wandering around freely.
08. By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points?
Standard 4d6, drop the lowest, arrange to your liking. I'll also permit the Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8). HP is max at first level.
09. Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so?
Yes, and Evil characters are not permitted. You are supposed to be 'Champions' after all, so only Good and Neutral.
10. Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it?
Multi-classing is allowed.
11. Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them?
Players can make their own die rolls with the forum's die roller, but I might roll for the players for the sake of speeding things along from time to time.
12. Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules.
No house rules. However, I do use Encumbrance. I hadn't realized the last time I started a game that this is apparently a real deal breaker for some. So I wanted to be upfront about that early.
13. Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?
Background is necessary, but it doesn't have to be particularly long or detailed. Really just the basics, and a reason for why you have agreed to the mission, and anything beyond that is gravy.
14. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?
Kind of a mix of all, but I do put emphasis on roleplaying in particular.
15. Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters?
I'll allow the following books, which are the only ones I have: PHB, XGE, Tasslehoff's Pouches of Everything (kind of necessary) and the Adventurer's Domestic Handbook (if you have it; if not, don't sweat it).
======================================
Funny story, I was hoping to draw in some new people with this game, so I actually posted this at the Playground first. But there was very little interest, most of it coming from people who already play here. So I'm opening it up onsite.
If you've already applied to this game on Playground, you can repost your character here assuming you are still interested. If you want to express interest, go ahead. I still want to give priority to new people, if any do submit something, but anyone here can have any remaining open spots if they want. Let me know if there are any questions.
