"Do we leave them to their deaths with the gem they were fighting over, or do we continue on?" Caelynn asks.

"Let's search and see if we can find any clue to their identity," Daos suggests. "Maybe they have kin that should be notified, and the gem can be given to them, if any." He kneels down and searches the body for any sign that might point to who they might be.

"They were most likely orphans or have no family," Caelynn says as she searches the other body for any clues as to who the person might be.

The woman has nothing in her pockets except a silver piece--and a piece of paper. As Caelynn reads it, she realizes that it's a contract.
The recipients of this contract (hereby referred to as "the thieves") will break into the castle of the deposed Countess Cryfold and steal as many of her jewels as is possible without alerting the guards. They will return the stolen gems to the client, who will meet them at Darkstone Cavern at 12 O'clock on Tyrsday. He will pay 500 gold for each gem, 1,000 for the emerald.
It's signed by Martha Jutland and Aaron Bourne.

"So someone hired them to break into Cryfold's manor. And...what? They only stole one gem and then killed each other over it?" Daos wonders.

"One emerald is worth 1000," Caelynn points out. "I would say that the guards pursued them, but they wouldn't have left the gem behind, so I'm not quite sure what happened here."

"It sure seems like they killed each other," Meine remarks. "Where's this Darkstone Cavern? Nearby?"
Caelynn vaguely remembers that Darkstone Cavern is about a mile east, off the road.

"Well, it doesn't appear to have anything to do with our current mission on the surface, but it might be worth checking out," Daos reasons. "If the person who commissioned this theft has any connection to the Night's Breath, for instance. What do you all think?"

"Why should we spend any more time than we need to combating the Night's Breath?!" Tympany argues. "If you ask me, we should seek to close the Mouth first and foremost, and we have no reason to go off on a wild goose chase for something which maybe is tangentially related to that goal!"
"Well, it couldn't hurt," Meine says, ignoring the Gnome's outburst. "I certainly wouldn't mind taking a detour to beat up a criminal."
"If it comes to that," Valerie adds.

"I think the cavern is east of here, about a mile," Caelynn says. "To even get close to the mouth, we are going to have to deal with the Night's Breath," she points out to the gnome. "The more we deal with now, the less with have to deal with later."

"Even if we could close the Mouth this moment, the Night's Breath is still a dangerous threat that needs to be dealt with," Daos says. "But it is a moot point. The king wishes us to deal with them first. We need his cooperation to secure one of the artifacts, and likely will require his assistance to acquire the others, as well."

(OOC: How close to 12 o'clock on Tyrsday is it? Has that already passed?)

Tympany grumbles. "Yes, yes, of course. Still, we hardly need to meander around fighting every criminal who might be involved with the Breath."
Daos remembers from the calendar in the inn that today is Tyrsday, and judging by the sun's position in the sky, it's almost noon.

"Well, it's nearly noon and today is Tyrsday, so if we are going to do this, we should leave now," Daos remarks. "Let's put it to a vote. What say you all?"

"I say we check it out," Caelynn says.

"Yes, I agree," Valerie pipes in.
"I'm in, too," Meine adds.
"Well, my vote has been rendered irrelevant, but I say 'no,' anyway," Tympany says. "It's the spirit of the thing."
