The journey to reach Cryfopolis takes another hour or so, with no incidents besides passing a few merchants on the road. They eye the captured Halfling with curiosity, but make no comment. Eventually, the party reaches the gilded gates of Cryfopolis, guarded by a dozen soldiers on the walls and on the ground. Two of them stop the party as they approach. "Halt. Why is that Halfling man tied up?" one asks, speaking in a high-class accent. "We caught him trying to buy stolen jewelry," Meine explains. The guard looks the party over, and remarks, "Ah, adventurers. Yes, that checks out." With her spear, she gestures inside the city, saying, "You should take him to Captain Checkmicks, then. He should be in his office at the Watchhouse." Caelynn has run into Captain Checkmicks a couple times. She assessed him as a well-meaning, earnest man--but very stupid.

"Thank you," Daos says to the guards. He looks to Caelynn. "You are the one most familiar with this town, so I suppose you should take point."

Caelynn takes the lead to the Watchhouse. Once they are out of the guard's earshot, she says. "Captain Checkmicks is kind of an idiot even if he means well," she explains. "I had a few run ins with him back in the day."

"As long as he's honest and can be trusted," Daos says.

"It shouldn't be a problem," Caelynn says.

Caelynn has no trouble finding the Watchhouse, a well-constructed brick building in the rich side of town. A couple of guards question the party on their intentions, then bring them and the prisoner to see the Captain.
"Well, now, what seems to be the problem?" he asks, standing up from his desk. He's a relatively young man, in his mid-thirties, with a small but bushy moustache and close-cut brown hair. He glances over the party, not seeming to recognize them. Upon noticing the Halfling, however, he breaks into a smile. "Ah, I see! Band of adventurers here to turn in a lawbreaker, eh?"

As Caelynn has vouched for his trustworthiness, Daos decides to be honest. "Nice to meet you. I'm Daos Soulstaff. The king sent us here to investigate another matter, and we sort of stumbled upon this by accident on our way here. We came across two corpses, having apparently killed each other. On one of them we found this gem and this note," he says, handing both to the captain. "We decided since the rendezvous it mentions was nearby, to check it out. That's where we found this man, who was waiting for the deceased to show up. We captured him. He claims to be working for Mayor Marjorie Johnston."

Caelynn wasn't so sure that the captain was going to go against the mayor, but it was already said so there wasn't much to be done about it now. "He claims he has been in jail before too, so I'm not sure if he broke out of jail, or if he served his sentence."

"My goodness!" the Captain says. "Yes, that's exactly the gem that was stolen from the manor last night. But the Mayor? That's absurd. She's a respected leader of the community, and plenty rich, besides. What's this about working for her, and being in prison?" he asks the Halfling.
The criminal puffs his chest up and declares, "I haven't been informed of my right to remain silent. Any testimony extracted from me before that point is inadmissible in court."
Checkmicks scratches his head. "Is...that the rule?"

"I, uh, think it probably depends on the local laws," Daos says. "You would know better than most what those are," he points out.

OOC: Would Caelynn know if that was a rule or not?

"I...don't know," Checkmicks says, confused. "Perhaps there's a book somewhere I can check?"
As far as Caelynn remembers, evidence given without informing the criminals of their rights can be admissible in court. However, it's not treated as a confession by the accused, only testimony from witnesses. Judges in Cryfopolis are likely to throw out any cases with conflicting testimony unless they're determined to see the accused punished.

Caelynn rubs the bridge of her nose, and sighs. "Techically, it can be dismissed in court," she says to the Captain. She then explains what she knows of the law. Considering she had been in trouble a few times, she knows the laws a tiny bit.

"I see..." Checkmicks says, nodding solemnly. "...wait, does that mean I should arrest him, or I shouldn't?"
"Well, if you ask me," the Halfling says, before Meine puts her hand over his mouth.

"It just means you need to explain to him his legal rights under your system of justice before you arrest him," Daos answers. "Also, you may wish to send out a few guards to retrieve the bodies of the people mentioned in the note, Martha Jutland and Aaron Bourne. They are about an hour from here, alongside the road. Although criminals, they still deserve a proper burial and for their next of kin, if any, to be alerted of their deaths."
