"There are a few dwarves living in the city, yes, but not nearly enough to make an army," Dasoto informs Regar. "This is a port town, after all, and my understanding is most dwarves don't care for boats."
"And you think you can get the elves' to willingly cooperate? Hmm, I'm pretty skeptical of that. You are making a lot of promises here, and rather grandiose ones at that. Before I can agree to anything, I think a test is needed, to see if you truly are as capable as you claim to be," he remarks.

"What kind of test?" Ravarie asks.

"It is said that to the north dwells a terrible beast in some old ruins in the wastes," Dasoto answers. "This beast has attacked a few caravans in recent months, leaving no survivors. I only know the creature's location because the scouts I sent in that direction never returned. So my proposal is this: Find this beast, and slay it in my name. If you can do this seemingly impossible task, then I will consider you qualified to lead your own seemingly impossible proposal."

"Alright. We'll set out as soon as possible then," Ravarie says. "Thank you for your time," she adds before she ushers her group out of the meeting with Dasato. She looks pretty defeated after that meeting.

Once Ravarie ushers the party out of the chamber and back onto the street, Bear Fang says, "That went well, I think?"

"Except he wants to conquer his own people," Ravarie says with a shake of her head.

Regar sighs "True, I could care less for that kind of thinking and talk but at least we have something to work on. It's not the most ideal agreement but perhaps we can renegotiate after we tend to this beast."

"Well, he is human," Lalora points out. "Plus, he has no other reason to care what happens to the elves or anyone else otherwise."

"My point is, how is it any different from what the ogres are doing?" Ravarie asks. "Or how is it any different than what the Silvanesti are doing to the Kagonesti?" she asks.

"It's no question that he wants to seize power, but perhaps, since they're his own people, he'll feel more of an obligation to treat them fairly," Kori suggests, bobbing Habbakuk in her arms. "The ogres consider humans and elves to be scum. He'll just consider humans people who should follow his orders."

"Right now the humans, ogres and elves are in balance, more or less," Lalora says. "Disrupting that balance will change things, naturally. We might not be able to control in what ways things change. The humans are ambitious, and I suspect this Dasoto is no different. He'll turn this to his advantage so he comes out on top. The elves would make much better stewards of this land."

Regar "I can't say that any of the other races the dwarves live near would be any better, but the dwarves themselves would be better than keeping the ogres in their current status. But believe me things could be far worse. I just hope our tipping the balance doesn't cause it to do so."

"Are you sure about that?" Ravarie asks Lalora. "We cousins don't exactly get along well with one another," she points out.

Lalora shrugs. "The elves just need a strong leader," she says. "The Silvanesti have plenty of experience in leading our peoples."
