Back in late 2020, I picked up a copy of Heroes' Feast, the D&D cookbook and made most of the recipes in it over the following year.  It was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot about cooking in the process.

Now that the second book, Flavors of the Multiverse, is out, I have picked that up, too and intend to do the same.  I've created this thread so I don't clutter up other threads.  My goal is to make about one recipe a week or so.  However, like with the first book there are several I probably will skip, including anything made with seafood, mushrooms or alcohol (as I'm not a fan of any of those things).

Tonight, I made the first of the Yawning Portal recipes from my new D&D cookbook: Goldenstars!

"As you step onto the docks of Berdusk, the Jewel of the Vale--perhaps fresh off one of the many boats that ply the River Chionthar--there's a good chance the first thing you'll eat will be a goldenstar.  These rich little pastries, traditionally stuffed with a local chicken sausage and Goldenfield's batatas and leeks, are known for their distinctive triangular shape.  Vendors sell them everywhere, and their heartiness will tide you over until you can manage a sit-down meal.  Varieties of the goldenstar have spread throughout the Sword Coast, from the river's end at Baldur's Gate to as far north as Neverwinter.  But every time you eat one done right, you'll be brought back to the docks of Berdusk."

It's been awhile since I've made a Heroes' Feast, and I forgot how long they take to make.  I figured, they're basically appetizers--shouldn't take too long.  I spent five hours working on these.

Anyway, as you can see, some of them didn't maintain their triangle shape very well.  But presentation comes second to taste, in my mind, and they are quite tasty.  Essentially just stuffed bread; they crust is made from a dough with a lot of onion powder in it (hence the yellowish coloring).  It was far flakier than I was anticipating.  The stuffing is turkey sausage, Yukon potato, and leeks, seasoned with salt, pepper and thyme.

Anyway, they were pretty good!  Sort of a savory mini-pie of sorts.

This is actually a 2E recipe.  It first was mentioned in Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast (1994; written by Ed Greenwood).  So that was pretty neat.

Yeah, they are pretty good.  Nice and savory.  And I guess since I used turkey sausage, it was sort of Thanksgiving appropriate.

Haha, I don't have either the equipment or the proficiency to film and upload a video.

But no, not a soup.  Although the last book did have a couple of soups (which were among my favorites), and I think this one does have a couple, as well.

Tonight, I made the first of the Rock of Bral recipes from my new D&D cookbook: Fried Soy with Vegetables!

"This soy-based protein dish originated from a gnome recipe, but it is equally popular with those who shy away from animal meat, including some communities of elves.  It is also ideal in environments where livestock is harder to keep, such as the Underdark and the Rock of Bral.  The original gnome version uses chicken broth as a base, but vegetable broths work just as well.  While the tofu is the star, the mélange of scallions, bok choy, bell pepper and carrots imparts a variety of textures and flavors.  Rice-based cooking wine and soy sauce makes it a lustrous and savory meal."

This one didn't take nearly as long to make as the Goldenstars, although most of the time consumed was with prep (such as chopping up the veggies).  Still, the whole thing took me a couple of hours.

The meal itself was pretty good.  Just the right amount of spicy.  I served it with some white rice.

I've eaten stir fry before, but never made it myself.  It was a fun, new experience.  And probably better for me than the stuff I usually eat.

Oh, it was.  A bit less so the following day (I had leftovers for dinner tonight).  Ironically, though, I thought it would have been better with actual meat.  The tofu was just kind of bland to me.  I suppose adding meat would have undermined the point, since it's a vegetarian meal, but...I dunno, might consider that if I ever make it again.  (Maybe use impossible beef, as a compromise).

Anyway, next week's recipe looks long and complicated, and will require a lot of ingredients I don't already have, so hopefully I can track them all down this Sunday.  Hopefully it's good, as well.
