By the way, for those of you who don't know, Trias was a familiar of Kaarin's in another campaign. Anyway, what we have so far: - Familiars should talk
- The possibility of casting spells through familiars
- Find Familiar as a class ability
- The possibility of seeing through the familiar's eyes
Any other ideas?

What about the familiar themselves as some sort of improvement? Like a Raven might be able to screech magically loud, or a snake gain venom, or a rat go invisible.

The familiar's power should be linked to the mage's level, not how long they've been around, if bound to time the power increase could never happen and wouldn't be much to look forward to unless downtimes were like years. well, i think it would be more handy if it depended on how long the mage had the familiar, emphasizing the bond-type aspect of it, as if the gain in ability was more based upon trust or something. however, maybe a more powerful mage could bend the familiar's will with a bit more force.

Hmm, I don't know. Maybe at higher levels. I don't want them to be overpowered.

There could be spells that give your familiars those abilities. They'd take up spell-book slots and memorized slots, that'd be a pretty big price to pay, but one reasonable enough, to account for a familiar's power.
Perhaps an "Augment Familiar" line down the alteration school.

"Augment Familiar?" Been perusing the Spell Compendium, have you?
I don't know. I suppose something like that could work. I guess the whole thing just about needs an overhaul.

It's the 3E book that contains the spell Augment Familiar. ;D

Oh, you seem to know 3e better than I do, and I play it... sort of.

I know many things!
Anyway, how's this look:
Level 2 - Find Familiar Level 4 - See through its eyes Level 6 - Cast touch spells via familiar Level 8 - Familiar gains a magical ability

that looks good to me, though my perspective is limited. but, using touch spells would bring up the familiar's survivability problem again, wouldn't it? maybe there should be some slight hp/ac increases for the familiar, as well? or as discussed above, maybe a spell to make the familiar a bit more combat-ready.

Familiars typically have 2-4+1 per wizard level HP and an AC 7. Although it sometimes varies depending on the species. Thing is, familiars aren't really intended to be used in combat. That's what Monster Summoning is for.
I suppose a spell could be designed to buff up a familiar's AC or something. HP isn't really possible, as that's more of a priest's domain (like Aid).

Well it'd be a sneaky way of doing things wouldn't it? Have the familiar sneak onto them, then deliver a crushingly powerful spell.

I think that's the idea. To either use the familiar as an extension because you can't reach someone for a beneficial spell (like Fly or Invisibility)...or to deliver a sneak attack of sorts on an enemy (and hope the familiar can then run off before the enemy recovers).
But in the heat of melee, it probably would be a bad idea to try and toss the familiar in the midst of it while you remain safe.

No, heh, that'd just plain be foolhardy unless the magic ability your familiar gained turned it into a combat-ready beast.
