"I really don't think that was the case," Ladonna says. "Say that you were starving. Wouldn't you do anything maybe not to feed yourself, but at least feed your daughter?" she asks her mother.

"Are you suggesting that twenty years ago the goblin clans came together and launched an attack on our village because they were hungry? Perhaps they should have stopped running around in the woods like savages and got real jobs or did something to contribute to society instead," Amanda says.

"I just want to help her out, hoping to ease her pain." Ryan rises, picking up 45gp from the desk before leaving. "We will have a chat."
He goes out to the Inn looking for the Widow.

"I can't say what happened twenty years ago," Ladonna says with a shake of her head. "I was a baby, so I don't remember what happened," she explains to her mother. "I can only tell you what is happening now. Perhaps it is time for this town to stop living in the past so much."

Ladonna Marche (Marche Residence) "If you ever paid attention in church, you'd know that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it," Amanda says, shaking her head. "You're still looking at the world like a child. No wonder, as you never grew up. You would do well to be more like your little sister. She, at least, has a future ahead of her."
"In any case, the important thing is we're back together and the Sandon Festival won't be canceled," Felicia adds.
Ryan McIntyre (Buho Inn) Ryan leaves the temple and makes his way to the inn, where the Kurtz family has been staying since the fire a few days ago. Stepping inside the inn's common room, he finds it largely empty. This makes sense, with a possible war brewing, there wouldn't be very many guests that would be willing to stay in the village. Shanson and Hazel are there, of course, although Kara is conspicuously absent. Kerna Kurtz and her two children, Roland and Jas, are sitting at a table, eating an early supper. They have since been cleaned up since Ryan last saw them--they are no longer covered in ash.
"McIntyre!" Shanson exclaims when the young man enters. "Gonto be praised, so it's true! We just heard that you lot returned and even managed to make peace with the bloody goblins of all things. I think that is deserving of a mug of our best ale, on the house!" He fills up a mug with amber liquid and sets it on the bar.

"There is a difference between ignoring history and living in the past," Ladonna points out with a sigh. She absently rubs at her forehead, only to feel the grime there. "Ugh, listen, I just want to take a bath," she finally says. "I'm dirty, hungry still, tired, and I have twigs in my hair. You can compare my lack of competence to Felicia later."

Ladonna Marche (Marche Residence) Ladonna washes up using the basin (even if the Marche family could afford something as luxurious as a tub, there wouldn't be any room for it in their small, one room house), scrubbing her body of all of the dirt, ichor and blood and rinsing out her hair. While she does so, Felicia sets to work on cleaning and sewing up Ladonna's clothes so they look a bit more presentable.

"Sure, pour me one!" Ryan says as he makes his way to Kerna's table. "Ma'am, mind if I take a seat?" Assuming the affirmative, he pulls a chair out and seats himself at the open spot.
"I am sorry for your loss. Is there anything I might do help out the family?"

Kerna nods her consent, so Ryan takes a seat at her table with his ale. Kerna Kurtz is a woman in her late 30s, with very tanned skin from years of working farmland out in the sun. She has brown hair usually pulled back out of her face, and bright blue eyes. She currently looks quite worn down, likely from dealing with the death of her husband and the recent possibility of another war. Her two children sit with her, Roland and Jas, only 11 and 7 years old respectively. They eye Ryan with a mix of suspicion and curiosity, but voice no objection to him sitting with them. "Thank you," Kerna says. "That's very kind of you to offer...but I'm not sure. I've had several days to think everything over, but...I honestly haven't come up with much. The three of us will have to try our best to work the farm ourselves. We don't have the coin to hire help, but the kids are getting older, so they can do more to pitch in. Especially with the autumn harvest coming up soon. She shakes her head and sigh. "I'm probably too old at this point to find another husband, so for now, we're on our own. I would gladly accept any help offered, but I don't have much I could give in return." An idea seems to occur to her suddenly, and she looks to Jas. "Unless you would be interested in my daughter's hand? She's only seven now, but in another decade she would be old enough to marry and I'm sure she'll make a wonderful wife. You aren't betrothed to anyone, right?"

Ryan responds. "It is a very nice offer, but I must pass." Turning to wink at the girl. "I'm afraid to commit to anything a decade into the future."
He takes a drink, wiping his mouth before continuing. "What would it take you to hire enough help for the harvest?"

Jas looks a bit relieved, actually.
"To hire a farmhand," Kerna says after a bit of thought, "would probably cost a silver a day. So perhaps three gold a month. But what would you ask for in return? I am not sure what else I have to offer you."

"I am not looking for anything in return, but I hope that I can convince you that the Goblins really meant not to hurt anyone. I just want to help, to somehow allow you to move past his death and maintain your farm in the interest of your children. I would like an open invitation if I might ever need room and board. And, come to Church." With that, Ryan reaches into his pouch and fingers a total of 12gp. He palms them and reaches for Kerna's hand, depositing them to her.

Kerna looks down at the dozen gold coins in her hand, glistening in the light. She closes her fingers over them tightly, and nods. "Thank you," she says, fighting back tears. "Yes, of course, you are always welcome at my home. And I will make sure all three of us attend services every week. Bless you, and praise Gonto."
Jas tugs on her mother's sleeve. "Mama, does this mean we can go home now?" she asks.
"Yes, child. First thing in the morning, we can go home," she says, giving the girl a kiss on the head.
