CH. 01 - Breaking Chains

Jaeron "Unfortunately even if I had more healing spells the poor fellow would be beyond my level of healing..I'm sorry." the gnome says shaking his head sadly.

As they come up to the dwarven-looking genasi corpse, Mathias intones, "This man died defending his people and his homeland.  A better death, no dwarf could ask for."

"There'll be time enough for that later.  For now, we'd best focus on what we can do for the living." With a glance towards their genasi chaperone, he adds, "Hopefully this leader we're goin' to see can help us figure out how."

"Come on, we mussst hurry, Our focusss mussst be on the captivesss. The sssooner we get back to the ssship the sssooner we can give chase."  Arieal says

SENLLIP:  "Where do you collect the dead for burial?"

"We bury our dead at sea," the woman answers.  "But there's usually a ritual for that first.  I'll send someone to collect this poor man once we reach our leader."

She reaches down and gently closes the man's eyes.  "So much violence...and so unnecessary," she laments.  Getting to her feet, she continues leading them across the bridge.

As they move on to the next bridge, they pass by a small house that is burning.  A child's cry can be heard from within.  "Oh no," the woman gasps.  She tries to enter the building, but the heat of the flames forces her back.

Kalana tries to pull the woman back from the burning building. "Arieal, can you do anything about the fire so that we can get in there?" she asks. "Or anyone for that matter?"

[Nuke]

Arieal evaluates the situation, is the backside of the hut on fire? If not, she will dive into the water and swim to the back-side and levitate so that she can tear open the back wall and extract the baby.

Jaeron "Unfortunately I didn't pray for any divine spells to deal with fire today either...I really feel quite unprepared for the events today." the gnome looks for some buckets since his was left back in his room on the ship. "If you have any buckets around we could try and put the fire out."

Mathias frantically searches the building's face for the nearest reachable window.  The moment he locates it -- assuming such a window exists -- he jumps up and launches himself bodily through the glass, then attempts to crawl towards the source of the crying.

Kalana looks around for a moment before she jumps into the water to thoroughly drench herself before she climbs out, and runs into the building. Standing around waiting for someone to make a move was most likely going to kill the child.

Kalana and Arieal both jump into the water.  Kalana climbs back up onto the dock while Arieal swims under the house to reach the back.  However, as she is doing so, she notices there is a cut hole in the bottom of the house.  It appears to be currently blocked by something, though.  She comes up behind the house and prepares her levitation power, although how she plans to 'tear open the back wall' is something of a mystery.  Magic?

Jaeron looks around for a bucket or some other vessel that can hold water.  He spots a small rowboat tied off a bit further down, and there appears to be a wooden bucket sitting upside down inside the boat.

Mathias launches himself through the nearest window.  Luckily, the windows do not contain glass panes, as that would likely really hurt.  He lands inside and immediately starts coughing from the smoke and feels pain from the intense heat everywhere.  He can see that the building is fairly simple in design, with only a single room.  There is a cut hole on the floor near the middle that leads right into the water.  But a bed has been knocked over and is currently blocking it.

On the far side of the room is a dresser that has also been knocked over.  A child, perhaps 9 or 10 years old, is trapped underneath the furniture.  The fire rages around them and is ever creeping closer to the child.

We'll take this round by round.

Round 1:

Kalana and Arieal both jump into the water.  Kalana climbs back onto the dock and Arieal swims to the other side of the house.
Jaeron searches for a bucket.  He makes a WIS check (1d20):  8, pass.

I am legitimately curious, though, how does Arieal with her STR of 9 plan to tear down a wooden wall?  Not with her bare hands, I assume?

Jaeron rushes and grabs the wooden bucket near the boat and fills it with water then runs back to the burning house and throws the water on the fire and repeats this until the others return from the building.

Kalana joins Mathis by entering through the window, hoping that now she is soaked, that will help with protecting her just a little from the fire. She starts coughing from the smoke, so she lifts her wet shirt a bit to cover her nose and mouth so she can breath a little bit better. "Looks like we are going to have to move the furniture.

Mathias crawls over towards the dresser where the child is trapped, staying as close to the ground as he can in hopes of minimizing smoke inhalation.  He hardly gives any indication that he notices that Kalana has joined him; but he does pause momentarily when he reaches the dresser, waiting for her to catch up. 

As soon as her hands touch the piece of furniture, he hauls on it with everything he's got to toss it clear of both the child and their path to the exit (the window through which they entered).  After that's accomplished, he'll throw the kid over his shoulders, charge back towards that window as fast as he can move, and shove the child through the window before climbing out himself.

While Jaeron attempts to put out the fire with the bucket he found, Mathias and Kalana move into the house deeper.

Once they get to the dresser, the two work together to try and lift it off the child.  Their combined strength is more than enough to do the job.

Mathias then picks up the child and the two head back to the window.  By this point, the flame has done considerable damage to the building, and the roof caves in.  This, along with Jaeron's constant splashing with water, helps put the fire out somewhat.

"Quickly, place the child in the water," the woman with them says.

Mathias picks up the child and heads back to the window and takes (1d6): 4 damage from the fire.  Mathias is now moderately wounded.
