Daos readies his staff and carefully looks and listens, trying to use his elven senses to detect where the mysterious voice is emanating from. "Are you a survivor or an attacker?" he calls out. "Show yourself."

“Neither,” the voice responds. “I’m...an employee. I received a letter from an unknown sender, requesting I come to this town so they could hire me for a job. You can imagine my surprise when I arrive to find it destroyed and aflame.”

Daos frowns, but remains tensed with his staff at the ready. "Just how many people did this guy hire?" he asks rhetorically.

"Dunno" Bayla responds. "But I'm not about to work with someone who won't even show his face."

The voices pauses momentarily, then lets out a high-pitched sigh. Several seconds later, a thin Halfling, clad in studded leather armor and a black cloak, comes out from behind a pile of rubble.

Daos lowers his staff once the halfling comes out into plain view. "And your name?" he asks.

“Melvin Featherhill,” he replies, begrudgingly. “But please don’t call me that. I go by ‘Night Dagger’...or ‘Mel,’ if you insist.”

Daos somehow manages to maintain a stoic face upon hearing the edgelord nickname Melvin had given himself. Clearing his throat, he says, "Well...Mel, I am Daos Soulstaff, and this is Bayla. We, too, were hired to come here for a job. Likely by the same person. We intend to investigate what happened here. And you?"

"Well, I suspect marauding orcs are the culprits...and I'm always up for hunting down marauding orcs. Count me in."

"Mel. Right." Bayla scratches her nose. "The treasure starts getting a little thinner stretched three ways, but I'm not going to stop you from joining us. Just, ya know, same rules as for the half-elf. Pull your own weight. This ain't a free ride."

"I've also seen evidence that orcs may be responsible," Daos says. "But I want to confirm this myself before rushing to judgment. Any help is welcomed." Turning to the half-orc, he says, "Bayla, can you show us where you saw these tracks you spoke of?"

Bayla leads the others to the tacks she found. She endeavors to follow them a little further.

Upon being shown the tracks, Daos will attempt to gleam as much information and clues from them as he is able to, in an attempt to try and determine who made these tracks, how many there likely were, the pace they were taking, how recent they are, and anything else that might prove useful.

Two things about the tracks particularly stand out to Daos and Bayla: first, the footprints are still fairly fresh. Second, there are many more tracks leading away from Meyerville than leading toward it.

Daos relays his findings to the others. He kneels by the tracks and gestures to them. "This seems to confirm that the attackers took prisoners. Far more people left than arrived." Getting back up to his feet, he adds, "Looks like the only course of action is to follow them and see where they lead."
