Ladonna "My experiences are the opposite," Norris argues. "If someone believes you to be a friend, they lie more, not less, out of fear of alienating you with their true selves. People are most honest when they believe they have nothing to gain or lose by lying, which is usually when they don't know you at all. But even then, there's still lying, because people lie to themselves. So even when they are trying to be honest, they aren't. They can't be."
"Then let's have a small contest here," Norris offers. "You tell me everything you've learned from me with your method, and I'll tell you everything I've learned about you with my method, and we'll compare who knows more."
Lillian "I agree, but sometimes violence is the only way, too," Finbul points out. "As I said, people in power never give it up willingly. If they can't be pressured into stepping down, then sometimes using force is the only other alternative available. But it should always be the very last resort, I think."

"You want to be charmed?" Ladonna asks in amusement. "I'm going to have to pass on that contest, at least for the time being," she says. "But, more than anything, I think I want to be your father's apprentice."

Ladonna "Then you should probably speak to him then," Norris points out.
"He is likely in his office at the moment," Zesk offers helpfully. "Its above the chapel, next to the priest's office, past the copying room."

"I have actually already spoken to him," Ladonna says. "But I wished to meet his apprentices first before committing to the idea of becoming an apprentice of his."

Ladonna "Ah, you mean you were so disarmed by how nice he is, that you forgot to ask?" Norris asks with a teasing grin.
"Master Sern does have a way of making one feel at ease," Zesk admits. "It is probably what makes him so good at his job as an almoner."

"I have to admit that I wasn't expecting him to be so nice," Ladonna says despite Norris' teasing. "At first, he was trying to do a little matchmaking for his son."

Ladonna "Not surprising, especially as you're a knight," Norris states. "But if I were you, I wouldn't start thinking up names for a firstborn just yet. I've little interest in marrying anyone."

"What makes you think I'm even interested in marrying you?" Ladonna asks curiously. "We are roughly the same age from the looks of it, and neither one of us are married. That suggests that there is something wrong with the both of us."

"Let's hope it never comes to that..." After a brief pause, she asks, "Were Ingot, Liala, and Ladonna's father able to find accommodations?"

Ladonna "There's nothing wrong with me, aside from the fact that I have high standards," Norris retorts. "As for you...ah...you're looking to marry for status. Well, good luck with that. I don't think it will bring you the happiness you think it will, though."
Lillian Finbul nods in response. "Yeah, there were plenty of empty rooms in the guesting house, so it was no problem. I think Liala went to see the horses at the stable, Ingot went to the blacksmith's, and Jonas went to the barracks."

"You had to have a look to pry that information out of my head," Ladonna says with a tsk sound. "Now why would you be curious enough to do that, I wonder?" she teases. Though, she doesn't wait for an answer. She just turns back to Zesk. "It was truly a pleasure to meet you, Zesk. I'm sure we will be seeing much more of each other in the future." With that, she says her goodbyes, and then heads back to the almoner to ask to become his apprentice.

Ladonna Ladonna leaves the library, heads downstairs, through the dining hall, across the chapel, and back upstairs to the copy room, then into the almoner's office once again where she asks to be his apprentice.
"Well now, perhaps," he says with a smile. "I do have two apprentices already, but I might be able to take one more on. It depends on how far along you are in your own studies." He fishes through some scrolls in his desk, finds the one he is looking for, and unfurls it before her. "Take a look at this. Can you decipher what spell it is?" The arcane equations on the scroll are far more complex than anything Ladonna has ever seen before.

Ladonna studies the scroll until she feels like her eyes are going to cross, and then hands it back to the almoner. "Hmm, this is a bit too advanced for me."

“I think I’ll head to a local tavern...’trawl for rumors’ and the like,” Lillian says. “It’ll be helpful to see the average viewpoint on things are.”

Ladonna Sern retrieves the scroll, furls it back up and puts it away. "I see. Then let's try this one instead." He picks another, unfurls it, and sets it before her on his desk. This one is not a spell Ladonna knows, but she is able to piece together what it is. It appears to be a spell of memory...no, a spell of forgetfulness.
Lillian "You mean go into town?" Finbul asks.
Just then, another halfling enters the garden. She is a woman, dressed as a scullery maid, and looks to be in her mid-twenties. "Oh, are ya mistress Lillian?" she asks. "Been lookin' all over creation for ya. Wanted to let you and Dame Marche know that your room is all ready for ya, when ya'll are ready for it."
