"Well, we won't be retiring any time soon, I guess," Daos admits, noting the small amount of change found. "But maybe this will make it worthwhile." Picking up the ivory box, he opens it to see what is within.

Inside the box is a book titled Melf's Guide to Shooting Awesome Shit Out of Your Hands a book written by a great wizard Melf and his various spells as well as a history on how he came up with these spells.

"Well that appears useless. Perhaps the coffer is worth a little. Now let's see if anything else is awaiting us at the top of these stairs so we can fulfill our mission." A slightly shaken Kevril looks at his companions meaningfully, then starts up the stairs again.

"With a title like that, this book is surely a joke of some sort," Roshek comments. "Or perhaps this Melf was mad? He wouldn't be the first crazed wizard in the world..."

Puzzled by the...odd title of the book, Daos opens the tome and flips through it, to see if it is what it claims to be, or some kind of joke as Roshek suggests.

Daos had heard of the wizard Melf before, of course. What wizard hadn't? A number of popular spells were named for him, after all. But there wasn't time now to investigate this book's authenticity. Noticing that the others were leaving, he quickly places the book back in the ivory box, then collects it and the coin into his pack to be divided up later.

Roshek elects to stay downstairs, moving to the tower entrance to keep watch for any attack from elsewhere in the moathouse.

The upper level of this tower is in ruin the only thing still intact was a small section of the ceiling and the entire floor. You now in the upper level floor see nothing but rubble and debris from where the rest of the roof collapsed in the only section remaining has spider webbing it in most likely where that huge spider was residing. There is nothing more of interest in the upper section of the tower unless you like looking at debris and bones of prior spider meals.

"Nothing of interest then, I take it?" Roshek grunts. "Is everyone about ready to check out the main hall?"

Getting to his feet, Daos nods in agreement. "Looks like we're ready to move on. But this might be a fall back to and rest, if we have need to later."

You never want to be without a bolt hole and you surely don’t want bandits coming in the door while a giant spider is falling on your head.” Kevril nods sagely while making his wise sounding proclamation.

Moving Forward: Following the footprints.
This staircase leads to the house portion of the fortress. A careful examination of these steps reveals that some traffic (human, animal, and perhaps otherwise) comes this way. The doors at the head of the stairs are broken, one flat on the floor, the other sundered. Looking through the broken doors you can see into the great hall. This was once a great audience chamber, as shown by the tattered banners and tapestries on the walls, destroyed furniture, and heaps of rotting cloth thrown into corners. Once richly appointed, it has been thoroughly searched, sacked, and despoiled. Leaves and dirt cover the floor, and cobwebs hang from walls and the ceiling above. Looking up, you see that pieces of beams and chunks of stone poke through, indicating that the upper stories of the place are totally destroyed and likely to be impassable to anything larger than a rat.
