Caelin focuses all of his effort on defense, not attack. He kicks at the swarm to knock them off his boots, and bats away at any that climb higher than that with his hands. Iro tosses another ball of flame, but it misses and hits the tunnel wall instead, leaving behind a slight scorch mark. The old elf then backs away, until he is back with the others. Perceval smashes another rat with his hammer, and what's left of the swarm--barely more than a handful--start skittering away. At first, it looks like they may join their brethren swarming Caelin, but they continue past and head for the exit. "Ahh, is there one on me!? I felt something brush past me!" Brina cries in panic, but she calms down when Iro returns to the group, and she can see again by the grace of his flame. Embarrassed, she realizes the thing that brushed her ankle was Zakkoth's tail, not a rat, and she calms down. Zakkoth, meanwhile, calls upon his burning heart again, and turns one of the rats swarming on Caelin to dust. Conard moves back to protect the others, should the rats change targets; but for now, they seem content swarming Caelin. Finally, Eliana sends the cold, clammy spectral hand toward Caelin and picks off a couple of the rats from him, dropping desiccated rat husks to the ground at the rogue's feet. ============== InitiativeCaelin: 17 Iro: 17 Perceval: 17 Brina: 15 Zakkoth: 11 Rat Swarm 01: 9 Conard: 8 Rat Swarm 02: 7 Eliana: 4 Round 2!Caelin dodges. All attacks have disadvantage on him, and he has advantage to DEX saves. Iro throws a ball of flame at Rat Swarm 02 [AC 10] (1d20+5): 4+5 = 9, miss. He then moves 10 feet west. Perceval swings his warhammer at Rat Swarm 01 which resists bludgeoning damage [AC 10] (1d20+6): 9+6 = 15, hit for (1d8+4): 6+4 = 10/2 = 5 bludgeoning damage. Brina casts Vicious Mockery on Rat Swarm 02, causing them to make a WIS save [DC 13] (1d20): 18, pass. No effect. Ig628n7|1d20Zakkoth casts Sacred Flame at Rat Swarm 02, causing them to make a DEX save [DC 13] (1d20): 7, fail. Rat Swarm 01 takes (1d8): 1 radiant damage. 1d20Rat Swarm 01 disengages from Perceval and moves 30 feet east. Conard moves 10 feet west and readies a shove attack should any rats come toward him. Rat Swarm 02 bites at Caelin who is dodging (disadvantage) [AC 15] (1d20+2): 11+2 = 13, miss. 1d201d20Eliana casts Chill Touch at Rat Swarm 02 [AC 10] (1d20+6): 17+6 = 23, hit for (1d8): 5 necrotic damage. Conard grits his teeth, wishing he could be of more use, but this just isn't the kind of fight he has spent his life training for. {Actions}Second verse same as the first.

Garard, unsure if any of his abilities will target the rats without harming his companions, just tries to stay out of the way so the others can handle the pests.

Caelin Valaerys, pariah of TarkhisisHP: 18 of 18 | AC: 15 | Perception: 15 | Insight: 17 | Inspiration: 0 Conditions: None.As a wave of rats swarmed around him retreating towards the exit of the tunnel, Caelin, concerned that the sudden appearance of rats from the grates mouth may alert any nearby scouting parties, attempted to disperse them further, by taking a quick swipe at the remaining vermin. Caelin takes a quick stab at the fleeing swarm, skewering a couple more rats in the process, and dispersing what's left of them, so that they are no threat. He then moves out of the second swarm, but takes several small bites in the process, that individually are no matter, but all put together hurt him a fair amount. Iro hurls another ball of flame at them, distracting the swarm while Perceval moves in and smashes a few with his hammer. This gives Perceval a window of opportunity to exact some revenge on the disease-ridden vermin, and he manages to skewer enough of the rats to disperse the second swarm, as well, before the rest of the group even has a chance to act. ============== InitiativeCaelin: 17 Iro: 17 Perceval: 17 Brina: 15 Zakkoth: 11 Rat Swarm 01: 9 Conard: 8 Rat Swarm 02: 7 Eliana: 4 Round 3!Caelin stabs with his short sword at the fleeing Rat Swarm 01 [AC 10] that resists piercing damage (1d20+6): 11+6 = 17, hit for (1d6+4): 2+4 = 6/2 = 3 piercing damage. Caelin Valaerys, pariah of TarkhisisHP: 18 of 18 | AC: 15 | Perception: 15 | Insight: 17 | Inspiration: 0 Conditions: None.Caelin nodded, took a moment to evaluate his injuries, scratches, bites, but his armor and the Baaz's thick cloak had protected him from the worst of it. In the heat of it, he had thought the injuries were more grevious than then actually were. As Lady Eliana inquired, he could only grumble under his breath, "Bruised pride, cursed walls were slicker than I thought ..." He cleaned his blades, sheathing them, before moving back to the fore with Iro, as they led the group out of the tunnel. {Out of Combat Actions}OOC: 5 damage is a third of my HP's, and we seem to have spent a certain amount of resources without even getting to the church. Conard Marpique, 2nd lvl Ranger AC: 17 | HP's: 18 of 18 | Passive Perception: 10 | Natural Explorer: Grasslands | Favored Enemy: Dragons | Position of Privilege Conditions: None.
"The vermin were probably driven out of the cellars and woodpiles by the fires and sought shelter in the cool and the dark," Conard remarks. "Regardless it would seem that the complacency of peace has made our task even more difficult than it might have been."
Gripping his spear a little more tightly, Conard continues down the passageway, pushing rat corpses to the side with his boot whenever possible, whispering, "Watch your steps."

Ironwood "Iro" of the Cragpine Vale -- Kagonesti Lorekeeper (Circle of the Land [Mountain] Druid) -- Level 2 AC: 13 | HP: 13/13 | Passive Perception: 13 | Conditions: Inspiration | Spell Slots: Level 1 (1/3) | Wild Shape: 2/2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ironwood allows the rest of the rats to scamper away, holding the fire in his hand instead of throwing it at the fleeing rodents. Examining his companions wounds, he judges them generally minor in nature, though he does single Caelin out for a brief reminder. Heed me a moment, coyote. Make sure to clean those wounds - ratbite fever has felled more than its fair share of hale men.
Knowing not to push Caelin any further lest he think he was being chided or condescended to, Ironwood leaves him be and responds to Conard. The fires, yes, but long years of isolation has made these tunnels more the rat's home than ours. I wonder, are we as dragons to these beasts who harmed no one until we invaded?
