"Oh, swell," Amara grumbles. "I save your life, and my thanks is being homeless and getting less than standard rates."

“A little less, mind you. Which, considering how little I needed bodyguarding on this trip, is a decent deal,” Lillian says. “Though I’m not opposed to the standard rate, if you have a good argument.”

Ladonna listens to this exchange quietly as she prepares to leave.

"I mean, I did save your life, as I just mentioned," Amara points out. "From the assassin. Remember?"

"She didn't hire you to do that," Ladonna points out. She seems amused as she goes over the conversation she had with Liala, and shakes her head as she silently does a little self reflection.

“Yes, I don’t think you’ll let me forget it,” Lillian remarks. “How did you know enough about the attempt to stop it, by the way?”

Amara shrugs. "Right place, right time, I guess. I'd been keeping tabs on you both since you thwarted my last two missions, and I happened to see the assassin taking aim just before she fired, so I jumped in."

"Can we walk and talk about this?" Ladonna asks.

"Oh, that's almost disappointing," Lillian says, talking and walking as per Ladonna's request. "I had theorized at a very grand narrative where you were a spy in Amodeo's operations and knew exactly when and where to intervene--but 'right place, right time' is a satisfactory answer."

"There's no way I'd ever work for a guy who keeps slaves, although Amodeo and Calabrians like him sure throw a lot of coin at the Equalists in hopes that we will," Amara says. "I guess they're hoping we'll cause enough political instability that they can take advantage of it."

"Indeed not, though I wouldn't be surprised if many claimed the Equalists are in league with them," Lillian says. "What were most of the Equalists like? Bitter people, exacting vengeance on a nation that oppresses them? Or idealists, fighting for hope of a better Tardiff?"

"I only met the ones who were in the two cells I was involved with, because we're pretty spread out all over, but I'd say a bit of both from what I saw," Amara answers.

"And which attitude do you think serves the Equalists best?" Lillian asks.

"I think you need both, to be honest," Amara answers as they walk. "Idealists tend to be naive, sheltered and privileged. They don't really understand the full spectrum of problems we're facing and how best to solve them, because they see this fight as some epic clash between Good and Evil like in the bards' tales, and tend not to think beyond actually winning the fight. Winning the fight is actually the easy part; it's moving forward from there where things get really hard. But the cynics are often bloodthirsty and care more about getting revenge than helping us all get justice. They also tend to have a hard time seeing the big picture, and are more interested in instant gratification, and have trouble realizing this fight won't be won by killing as many nobles as possible. A movement with just one or the other is doomed. I think both sides need to keep each other in check."
