Normally, I'd dump WIS over CON, even in 2E, but it fits better with her character and ties into her backstory. She's a very frail, sickly young woman. I intend to keep her off the front lines. There's a good chance of her being one-shot whether she has 4 or 6 HP, by my reckoning. As for equipment, I held back because I wasn't sure how encumbrance works. She's not very strong, and I was worried giving her leather armor would push her beyond that 30 lb limit. If the penalty isn't too harsh, though, I probably will give her armor. Would a rapier be appropriate? They've always seemed like swashbuckler weapons to me. Ezeze, what's the cultural flavor of this setting? Standard faux-European medieval or something else? Technology level? Well, in any case, if she gets into melee, she's probably a goner anyway, rapier or dagger.

Hey no worries- I have no bad stats, but I also have no good stats so we're pretty unoptimized as is If you look at 3e's weight listings, they're way lighter than they probably should be- Leather armor weighs 15lbs, the crossbow is a mere 4lbs. If you're worried about the aesthetics of the rapier a short sword(which, mechanically includes long daggers if we're talking size) is a bit better than the dagger. You're not wrong on that last point

There likely was no lack of swashbucklers to learn from

With his 90 gold pieces, Mr. Vincent Oren, Esquire, shall buy... A courtier’s outfit. Jewels and all. Leaving him with a mere 10 Gp. Which, of course, is appropriate to his backstory.

You're a sorcerer right? Your average starting gold is sadly 75gp, not 90 Also you should spend at least some of the gold on a dagger and/or a ranged weapon of some sort, especially this low level.

Equipment Backpack (2 GP) [2 lbs] Winter Blanket (5 SP) [3 lbs] Flint and steel (1 GP) Silk Rope 50' (10 GP) [5 lbs] Grappling hook (1 GP) [4 lbs] Torch (1 CP) [1 lb] Thieves' tools (30 GP) [1 lb] Peasant's outfit (1 SP) [2 lbs] Trail Rations x7 (35 SP) [7 lbs] Waterskin (1 GP) [4 lbs] Light crossbow (35 GP) [4 lbs] Crossbow bolts x10 (1 GP) [1 lb] Dagger (2 GP) [1 lb]
Total spent: 87 GP, 1 SP, 1 CP out of 125 GP Total weight: 35 lbs
===========
See, here's my problem. I hit that first encumbrance level before even adding armor, never mind upgrading the dagger to a short sword or rapier. It feels like the rest of this is all pretty important, too. I guess I could drop the rope and grappling hook? That would free up a lot of weight.

Very well, then. Two daggers and a courtier's outfit (sans jewels). Now I just have 43 GP to squander on something...

Okay...so Complete scrapping of previous idea.
Here are some requests: Access to Thug Fighter (pg 51 UA) Access to Sneak Attack fighter (pg 58 UA) Access to Nymph's Kiss feat (pg 44 BoED) Access to Able Learner feat (pg 150 RoD) Access to Zhentarim Substitution Levels (CoV Web Enhancement) Access to Martial Rogue ( of 58 UA)
Soooo gonna build a brute Rogue type...Strength Rogue. Someone to flank and tank as it were, while also having a few skills to use outside of combat. Going to go at least 3 levels into The fighter it, before jumping off into Rogue.
Theodore Magnus Reefer/Midshipman on the 'Vehement' formerly of the 'True Justice', adopted son of Clan Vuldiyu, and Royal Ward
High Concept: Fey Touched Warrior Aspect: Ward of the Crown, sorta... Aspect: Pretty Sure I Lived By Myself? Aspect: Bravery over Brains Everyday!
Theodore Magnus was born the third son of a fourth son, into a middling branch of the aristocracy of Dandarrin. His families only real claim to fame being a distant and ancient blood relation to the royal family. As quasi royalty his family wanted for nothing. Theodore was expected to live a long and uneventful life in the capital. His early youth was spent in idyllic luxury.
This changed when the Ishari declared war with the surprise attack preceding the war. Young Theo's parents and several of his siblings had been aboard that ship, returning from a diplomatic envoy in Shipshaven. Theo had been away at a young men's finishing school, just outside the Capital. The memory of being summoned to the headmasters office to be told his family had been slain by Isharian Privateers haunts him to this day.
He became a ward of his far removed Grand Uncle, the Youngest of King Talebot's Sons, and used as rallying cry and propaganda piece amongst the nobility. His education shifted to matters of war, seamanship, and officerhood.
At the age of 12, two years into the War of Wits, he was placed aboard "True Justice", a Carrack in the Royal Navy. He served as a Cabin Boy and Captain's Steward for a year before seeing his first bit of battle.
The battle went poorly for the Narin ship from the start. The Master-At-Arms and seamen assigned the final watch of the night were busy gambling, and somehow missed the silent approach of a well armed Ishari caravel. The opening salvo of ballista and flaming arrow damaged the Justice's sails and rigging, while also slaying a fair number of crewmen. The Narin rallied through a haze of smoke and gauntlet of blades. The ships exchanged rounds of artillery but with damaged sails and low on crew, the Justice did not give as much as it took. The battle was lost, and the ship was left floundering.
Theodore had participated in the battle, but was quickly knocked unconscious while trying to defend the Captain's cabin.
The din of this first conflict has stayed with him as well, for a number of reasons. First, he had never heard a man cry before. Second, the smell of all that fire, blood, and bowel was a profound mix. Third(and perhaps most importantly) it was the day he met the Vuldiyu fey clan of Nixies, Nerieds, and Tritons.
'True Justice' ran aground and this is where the clan of aquatic fey came upon the young foundling. Theo made an easy life for himself on the little island he shared with the Nixie clan. He became a useful tool and ally, able to assist his new family in building a small underwater fortress in the reef surrounding their home. He taught many of them the King's Tongue and was taught to speak a bit of their language in turn. He utilized his formal education to teach the fey creatures much about the outside world, while marching to their simpler idyllic lifestyle. He became an expert fisherman, stealthy hunter, and bumbling poetic. As much as he enjoyed his easy life, he longed for the company of humans again...a longing his adopted family noticed, but did not understand.
In his third year on the island, the 'Vehement' and its accompanying fleet crested the horizon. The warship's famous commander had been drawn by the idea of a small adventure to be had amongst the wreckage on the beach. Against the warnings and concerns of his bosun and support staff, Smiling Drace took a longboat and did just that. Adventure was had, and the fey clan (with the assistance of Theo) played many good natured pranks and tricks on the Commodore and hid away team of sailors.
Eventually Drace and the others came upon Theodore's hidden refuge being nearly floored with surprise to see the young man living so well "by himself" on the deserted island. After an in depth explanation about who he had been, Theodore was secretly charmed to silence in regards to his adopted family by the Matron of Clan Vuldiyu. Drace and his men whispered about the boys amazing luck, and decided to bring him aboard.
Theodore left his island home, carrying a small satchel of food and supplies. Boarded the 'Vehement' and rejoined the human world, and the war. The next year was a blur of shipboard combat and conquest. He stood behind his captain , shoulder to shoulder with the other officers and midshipmen as Smiling Drace accepted the surrender of the Irashi king.
After that portentous moment, the last few weeks have been a blur. Drace intends to present the Young Magnus to his former benefactor the Youngest Son of the Last King, and now prepares to ride to the capital with the Conquering Hero and his band of hangers on.

I was honestly not expecting someone to come in on with Vehement with Drace, but seeing it written out I do not hate it. I'm okay with everything you asked for, Jherek Everfull with the sole exception of the Zhentarim Substitution Levels. I'm also going to suggest you swap out "Pretty Sure I Lived By Myself?" for something else - not because I don't like it, but because I think anything covered by that Aspect would also be covered by "Fey Touched Warrior." You might consider something related to either your time before the war, to your time with Drace, or to the fact that you've been used as a 'rallying cry' by the aristocracy. I'm going to take a second for Daos's benefit and point out that you are going to be guests of an esteemed admiral on one of his ships, then the guest of the King in the capital city. I understand the knee jerk reaction to stock up on blankets and rations, it's something ingrained into D&D players early on, but it's not going to be necessary.

Okay, good to know. I'm going to scrap my character anyway, though. Since Jherek is going with a rogue, maybe we can use another front-liner then? Since we have so many casters and all.

Okay, good to know. I'm going to scrap my character anyway, though. Since Jherek is going with a rogue, maybe we can use another front-liner then? Since we have so many casters and all. Don't feel like you have to. The plot is highly mutable. I can accommodate as many or as few front line fighters as the group wants to play. So I've got threads up for GravityEmblem , @truemane and N0br41nz . I'm waiting for Aspects from Snacs I'm waiting for crunch from Jherek Everfull and Martel and Daos is maybe redoing his entire character?

It's not so much party balance I'm worried about, as my own inexperience. If I'm playing the same class or role as someone else, there's a very high chance the other person will overshadow me, even if they don't intend to, and I'll just wind up superfluous to the party.

Daos , I specifically designed my Roguish fighter to supplement your proper rogue. If a melee mix-up happens we can feed each other flanking for juicey sneak attacks...tac on my character using proper martial weapons...he would appear a larger threat. Theo serves as a frontline fighter who can maybe do some extra damage from flanking with other warriors. As for other bits, you have more skill points and serve a solid roll as a skill monkey and trouble shooter. Your spread of points is impressive. I intend to pump a few points into various knowledge skills. Once I get my crunch up it will make sense.

Alright then. If that's the case:
Equipment Backpack (2 GP) [2 lbs] Flint and steel (1 GP) Silk Rope 50' (10 GP) [5 lbs] Grappling hook (1 GP) [4 lbs] Candle (1 CP) Thieves' tools (30 GP) [1 lb] Peasant's outfit (1 SP) [2 lbs] Light crossbow (35 GP) [4 lbs] Crossbow bolts x10 (1 GP) [1 lb] Dagger (2 GP) [1 lb] Padded Armor (5 GP) [10 lbs]
Total spent: 87 GP, 1 SP, 1 CP out of 125 GP Total weight: 30 lbs
After getting rid of the blanket, food and water, and exchanging the torch for a candle, I just barely have enough strength to wear padded armor.
