Ladonna and Lillian "One thing is certain, regardless," Liala adds. "We'll need to keep a careful eye on her, especially when dealing with anything regarding the Mad God. That's what triggered her breakdown last time, and it will almost certainly do so again."
Katya "Of course," Mereida responds. "I couldn't give you a good life, because of your status as a...bastard. But the upside to that is, nobody cares about whether I make a good match for you or not. That's why I agreed to let you marry Jherek. He makes you happy, and that's all that matters to me."

"Aside from all of this," Ladonna says. "Isn't the point of today to enjoy ourselves?" she asks.

"You've given me an amazing life, mom" Katya reassures her mother. "I had it in my head you wanted to unite the farms, what with us both being sole heirs and the history between our families after that disease a few decades back. But if you were just thinking about me, it makes this easier to say. Mom. I don't want to marry Jherek. Not anymore."
She continues, not wanting to leave her mother wondering at such a radical change of heart.
"I gave my word that I'd keep a lot of what happened secret, which is why I haven't told you before, but the coldness between Jherek and I is not just a temporary spat. He has betrayed me in a way I'm not sure I can forgive."

Ladonna and Lillian "Yes, I suppose you're right," Liala says. "I should get back to my own family then." She stands up. "Enjoy the festival." She then departs to search for her parents.
Katya Mereida's eyes widen with surprise, but then she frowns. "Don't tell me that those rumors about him were true? That he had another woman, a 'wild bride' out in the wilderness and that's why he's always going on those long hunting trips? I had thought it nonsense; just people making up stories because he was half-elven." She shakes her head. "I'm truly sorry, Katya. Sometimes people, even those you've known your whole life, can disappoint you."

Katya's first impulse is to tell her mother those rumors were ridiculous. She shouldn't let others spread lies about Jherek, however she might feel about him- but, no. Being believed already married, even without the permission of the church, is far better for Jherek than the truth; that he's with the Wyld Boys. Better to leave that rumor in place - he'd be happier being shunned than put on trial for murder.
Instead she keeps her answer vague. "I'd rather not talk about it. For Drundor and Thessila's sake, if not for his. They have always been very kind and they don't know anything about what has happened between us."

Ladonna, having no family at this celebration, decides to check on Katya. "I'm not interrupting am I?" she asks.

Lillian sits in silence, contemplating over what just took place and pondering on what course of action to take next. She looks around the room, searching for familiar faces, especially Finbul. Her relationship with him was...odd. He probably liked her the most out of the companions who had come with her, Ladonna, and Katya out on their adventures, but he also didn’t know about the whole time-travel issue. In fact, he probably wouldn’t believe it.

Ladonna and Katya"I understand," Mereida says. "But if that's the case, then I suppose your Solstice gift this year is even more appropriate." She reaches for the box to hand to Katya, but is interrupted when Ladonna walks up and asks if she is interrupting.
"Yes, is there something you need?" she asks, putting the box back on the table.
LillianLillian hears Finbul long before she sees him. She follows his shouting voice to where he and Damon are having an argument.
"Solstice is a holiday of my people. Humans stole it and incorporated it into their own culture," he says.
"Can you not ruin Solstice for one year with your yammering?" Damon demands. "Just one year, really. Don't you get tired of it?"
"Not until what was taken from us is rightly restored!"
"What, so you want to ban humans from celebrating Solstice? That's discrimination. And you say humans are oppressive," Damon counters.
"It's not the same thing!"

"Ah, I was wanting to speak to Katya for a few minutes, but I can come back when you are done," Ladonna says. "I'm sorry for interrupting."

“I don’t feel like the problem is the celebration, per se,” Lillian adds. “But in the lack of acknowledgement that it wasn’t a unique idea; of course, many forget that most of ‘human culture’ is just a mish-mash of other ones.”

"It's OK, mom." Katya leans in and gives her mother a filial kiss on her cheek. "You have already made this Solstice the best I could ask for. I'll have a word with Ladonna, then be right back."
She leaves her mother by the fire and follows Ladonna to wherever she intends to have this discussion.

Lillian"Don't you start, too," Damon complains. "Solstice is a human holiday. Halflings, or at least this one anyway, takes credit for literally everything everywhere."
"Don't call me a halfling, too-tall. I'm not 'half' of anything!" Finbul growls.
"Don't call me 'too-tall,' runt!" The two look about ready to go to blows at this point.

"I don't think your mother likes me very much," Ladonna says after she leads Katya away from her mother to a more less populated area. "But I suppose that is neither here or there. I wished to apologize to you," she says.

Katya's confusion is evident - first at Ladonna's statement that her mother doesn't like her, then at her offer of an apology. She shakes her head "my mother is wary of most everyone. I'm sure she'd like you if she knew you better."
Then she answers Ladonna's other statement; "what is it you have to apologize for?"

"It might have seemed that I have been avoiding you," Ladonna explains. "And that hasn't been the case. Father just tends to get worse this time of year."
