"I hadn't noticed" Katya responds, honestly. "Though I'm sorry to hear that your father isn't well. Is it something I can help with?"

Lillian steps between the two, raising her arms so as to prevent things from getting physical, and addresses Damon: “See, this is the issue! Human culture is rarely original, and that’s not a negative. But what is negative is claiming credit for it, and worse, putting down those whose culture did create the event.” She takes a deep breath and continues. “Look, it’s not as if you personally invented the holiday. In fact, I don’t believe any one person invented it. This is the sort of thing that slowly evolves over time, and it’s not unlikely that several cultures independently formed a festival held at the winter solstice. It is an important point in time for farming. And anyways, the point is it’s not worth fighting over. Take the opportunity to enjoy yourselves.”

Lillian "Of course an elf would take his side," Damon says. "Everyone knows that the first Solstice was a celebration of surviving the Carnage War over three hundred years ago. Maybe learn a little history before just assuming the loudmouth knows what he's talking about."

“That’s not the point,” she insists. “As I said, it’s likely both cultures developed a solstice celebration independently. The problem isn’t saying that humans invented it, the problem is refusing to entertain the notion that halflings might have done so as well-and worse, being condescending and rude as you do it.”

"Liala suggested getting him back with my mother," Ladonna says. "But I haven't seen my mother in years, and the only way that is going to work is if he cleans himself up. I'm not sure how to snap him out of it enough to get him to clean himself up."

"You were kind enough to give me real advice. I will do you the same courtesy. The church does not grant divorces easily. If even they were willing to give one, I imagine your mother must have wanted 'out' badly."
Katya rests an arm on Ladonna's shoulder. "I've had ample opportunity to learn recently that you cannot force someone to do better. You can only help the people who want to be better for themselves. Your father's state is not your fault. Nothing you did made it happen - which means there is nothing you can change to make him change."

Lillian"Hey, he was the one who started this," Damon objects. "I was trying to enjoy Solstice with my family, like everyone here. None of us want some lecture about it. If you don't like it, take it up with the halfling then, he's the one with the problem."

Lillian asks Finbul, half-knowing what the answer will be.

Ladonna manages to control her laughter at Katya's words. Ladonna knows that her father's situation now is completely her fault, and she does need to fix it. She also knows that Katya means well. "Thank you," she finally says with a smile. "But I'm still going to try to find a way to help him."

"Then I wish you the best of luck" Katya tells Ladonna. From her tone it's clear that Katya thinks Ladonna is making a mistake, but equally thinks there is nothing she can do to stop it. "Was there anything else you wanted to discuss?"

Ladonna shakes her head. "No," she says. "I'm sorry for taking you away from your mother. You two looked as if you were having an important conversation. Enjoy the rest of your Solstice," she says with a smile before she walks off. She looks for Hazel and Shanson since they have always been nice to her. She kind of wonders if they treat her the same way.

The conversation with Ladonna finished, Katya returns to her mother's side. "She wanted to apologize for being distant lately" she explains without prompting. "Honestly I hadn't noticed, but it seemed important to her."

Ladonna Ladonna finds the Fryes behind the inn counter, working hard to make sure everyone gets their orders. Solstice is always a busy day for them, much like with any festival. When Ladonna approaches the counter, Hazel spots her and turns to her. "Something you need?" she asks politely, but without any warmth or familiarity.
Katya "Probably has her hands full with her father," Mereida comments. "It's sad how quickly the Marche family went from a pillar of the community to...well, what they are now. And with their only child now in her twenties and still unmarried, I wonder if this is the end of their family lineage."
Lillian Finbul, who had simply been watching with mouth agape, snaps out of it when addressed. "Well, I...it's important to be acknowledged. Nobody wants to hear the hard truth, but they need to hear it anyway."

“And you chose him in particular beacause of his often-stated anti-Halfling viewpoint, correct?” Lillian confirms.

"She will marry well yet, mark my words." Katya tells her mother with a fair degree of certainty.
