"Helen," Ladonna says. "She might be willing to help me out. There is also the Count's children. Right now, the plan is vague at best," she admits. "But I will eventually have one."

"Lady Escott," Jonas corrects her. "And do you really think either she or the count's own children are going to go against him?" He sighs and shakes his head. "I won't bother reminding you what happened the last time you assured me you knew what you were doing..."

"It is only you and me right now," Ladonna says with a sigh. "And yes, I remember. I just need a little time before you run off to get me married," she says. "Besides, this time has given you a chance to get into shape."

"I have all of this free time because I have no job," Jonas points out. "The garrison commander won't even speak with me anymore after the incident with the count." He sighs. "I had hoped to become steward to your land, as that would at least give me something to do and get me out of Hart, but now that you've sold it...I guess it's back to sitting on my hands for the foreseeable future."

"Couldn't you always try getting a job somewhere else?" Ladonna asks.

"Perhaps, but where?" asks Jonas. "I am a disgrace in Buho and a disgrace in Hart. And I haven't the coin to travel further than those two places."

"I'm not really sure," Ladonna says. "Maybe you can try the farms outside of here?"

"As what, a farmhand?" Jonas asks. "I doubt the handful of copper I could pull in each month would make any real difference in things. Besides, all the farms in Hart are all owned by the count, too. If you kept your own land, we could have built a farm on it for ourselves," he points out.

"You are very quick to criticize," Ladonna says. "It was either sell the land, or go back to Buho."

"Yes, perhaps so," Jonas agrees. "But we are only in this situation because you didn't listen to my advice in the Sunwoods. You assured me you knew what you were doing and that everything was fine...just like you are now, so it's not terribly reassuring, as you might guess."

"People make mistakes," Ladonna says. "You can either dwell upon the mistake itself which doesn't get anyone anywhere, or you can accept the fact a mistake was made, learn a lesson from it, and move on," she explains. "I'm going to move on. I realize it isn't very reassuring, but I'm going to do what I can do to build up my reputation again so that we won't have to depend on me marrying some nobody knight."

"Marrying the knight will help our reputation," Jonas argues. "And at least I'm giving concrete ideas and not vague notions. We need a plan; a real one." He sighs again. "At least your mother isn't here to rub it into our faces. She'd probably be boasting right now about how right she was to abandon us." He shakes his head. "And I know you are eager to move on from making a mistake, but have you really learned a lesson from it? Because it sounds like you haven't."

"Fine. Set up the meeting," Ladonna says. "But if I find another way, I have the right to cancel it."

"Thank you," Jonas says in exasperation. "I'm sure if you just meet him, you'll like him."

"Have you ever known me to like a man?" Ladonna asks.
