CH. 01 - A Night on the Town

Giunona nods gravily as Miles described the situation they were in.
"Thank you for your courage." - she says to the other men that were ready to fight. - "Let's give those undead the peace of an everlasting death, I guess."
And as she turned toward the door, hand ready to strike, she prayed that Brother Montrel had that holy water somewhere in this temple.
"Everyone get ready. As soon as they enter, we attack."

[Daos]

The mood in the temple is one of desperation.  Everyone seems exhausted; not just from fighting and running, but just from the constant fear and tension.  The zombies, however, never tire, never get hungry or fatigued, never lose morale.  There's fear in everyone's eyes, fear of dying, of becoming one of those things.  But there's determination, too.  To take out as many as possible before they are overwhelmed.  Some do seem to hope for victory, but it's clear on Miles' face--a soldier who has seem enough action to know--that barring some kind of miracle, this is their last stand.  This isn't how Giunona envisioned her death.  In some obscure town in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by undead.  But at least she can take some comfort in knowing she's in a temple to her god.  Hopefully, Marthammor Duin looks after her.

"Steady now...be ready to strike," Miles warns the farmers, as he draws his great sword and does likewise.  The crack in the door grows larger and larger with each resounding thud on the other side.  The banging continues elsewhere, too.  One of the windows in the back breaks, and a zombie starts grasping through a hole in the boards, trying to reach anyone on the other side.  Several farmers start batting at the arm with a club, trying to beat it back.  More and more windows break, and the zombies start trying to break through the barricades over them, all of their eyes glowing with an eerie, unearthly green light.

Finally, with one last strike, the front gate shatters and zombies start pouring through.  Five made it inside as the party falls on them to attack, hoping to keep more from swarming inside.

As Giunona and Miles are up front, the zombies fall upon the pair, managing to strike the captain twice and Giunona once, despite their otherwise excellent defenses.  The farmers, in turn, fall upon the zombies, striking at them with their clubs.  Giunona hits one zombie with her shillelagh, caving in its rib cage, although it remains standing.  Miles misses entirely with his great sword.

It's not really feasible for all eight of them to focus on one zombie--there's not enough room to properly surround one.  But the farmers do team up; two assist Miles, two assist Giunona and the other two team up together on another zombie.  This teamwork seems to pay off a bit, when Giunona manages to down one zombie with the assistance of two farmers.  This victory is short-lived, as another zombie gets inside to take that one's spot moments later.

Miles continues having bad luck, missing his target and taking another punch in the chin.

Risking a glance about, Giunona sees that the barricades around the temple are failing.  About four more zombies have broken through and are fighting off farmers (and Shanna, who is aiding Marco and his family), who are desperately trying to hold the line and keep more from spilling in through the windows.

Uggh, I'm so tempted to use Turn Undead, but I want to hold on to it for a bit, in case things get worse.

At long last, Miles manages to get in a hit, bisecting the zombie across the waist.  Its legs crumple, but its upper half groans and claws at the soldier's feet.  Miles smashes its head in with his steel toed boot, then swings at a second zombie, but misses.  Meanwhile, Giunona turns her attention to another zombie, and strikes it with her shillelagh with enough force to explode its already softened skull, splattering its rotted brains in all directions.  Unfortunately, another zombie hits her pretty hard in the nose, causing her to see stars.  Furthermore, two more zombies now have room to squeeze inside and replace their fallen brethren.

Another three zombies manage to break in through the windows in different spots, as the farmers continue to try and hold off the four already inside.  One gets in through a window on the west side, grabbing a farmer and chomping into his neck, as he screams in terror and pain.  Several other farmers gang up on the zombie, batting at it with their clubs.  Another farmer on the east side screams out as a zombie breaks through a barricade and grabs her, dragging her back outside.  Furthermore, as odd as it might sound, Giunona can now hear footsteps on the roof.  It seems somehow the zombies have managed to get up there, and are looking for a way in.

Not on the frickin' roof.
Bloodied, tired, frustrated, Giunona's eyes starts to glow, a subdued growl coming from her echoing the one of the undead. - "If they start running don't pursue or attack them, save your strenght." - she barks at the others.

Then, with her voice louder than a crackling thounder, she shouts the same dwarven word she uttered at the tavern earlier the same night, only this time it was even louder due to her spell from before.

I wasn't expecting the zombies on the roof 💀 what kind of sick mind wrote this module, I'm scared ;_;

[Daos]

Finally finding his rhythm again, Captain Miles manages to take out two zombies with his great sword, one after the other.  The farmers aid with their clubs, but do overall little damage.

Giunona holds up her holy symbol, calling out to her god.  She feels a sudden surge of power, not like she's ever felt before--perhaps because she is standing on holy ground, a temple of Marthammor Duin himself.  The flash of light is much brighter, and two of the three remaining zombies flee in terror, fighting their ways through the crowd of zombies outside to escape.  One manages to resist, though, and take a swing at Giunona, but miss.

Not only does the light scare off those two zombies, though, it seems to be keeping the other ones outside at bay--at least for now.  Two of them, however, seem unaffected and push through the others, entering the temple.  They seem different somehow; the green glow of their eyes is brighter, almost burning, and they seem far swifter and stronger than the lesser zombies.  One of the farmers cry out in surprise at the sight of them, seeming to recognize them.  Giunona realizes she recognizes them, too.  They are the villagers who were drained of life by the wight in the cemetery.

As ordered, the farmers try teaming up on the newcomers, but to no avail.  None of them can seem to actually harm the creatures.  The reverse, however, is far from true.  One of the jujus takes out a farmer with one hit, then takes out a second farmer with another.

Captain Miles manages to decapitate the final regular zombie, then turns his attention to the jujus.  He misses the first one, then manages to strike with his third attack.  Giunona strikes the same juju with her shillelagh, but it easily dodges to avoid.  These jujus seem far more agile and dexterous than the mundane undead.

The farmers attempt to follow Giunona's advice and shove at the jujus, but to no avail.  The undead easily avoid the attempts and remain on their feet.  One of them takes out two more farmers.  The other one pounds on Captain Miles; striking him hard with one punch but missing the second.  Giunona strikes that same juju with her shillelagh, cracking a few of its ribs.

Brother Montrel, as it turns out, has his hands full as it is.  The feeble old man is no warrior, and is just barely mobile.  Several farmers are defending him from the zombies breaking in through the windows, but there's no way for him to get past them to reach the front.

The farmers continue trying to shove the juju zombies, but to no avail.  Another one goes down in the process, leaving only one farmer remaining.  However, Captain Miles is able to decapitate one of the jujus, taking its head clean off.  The body tumbles to the ground as the head rolls down the aisle.  He and Giunona turn to the second juju zombie.  She swings her shillelagh, but it easily dodges.
