"Thanks," Ladonna says, but she is frowning. She didn't like seeing him drinking like this, especially in the morning. "What's wrong?" She asks

"What could possibly be wrong?" he asks rhetorically. He tugs at his tunic a bit. "Thanks, by the way, for the clothes. They're probably worth more gold than I've ever seen in my life. I'll try not to spill anything on them." He gestures for a servant to take his empty glass and bring him a new one.

"Wait a minute..." Lillian says, racking her memory. "You're Mara Haywise, aren't you? We met a while back..."

Mara bows politely to Lillian. "That's very kind of you to remember a humble servant like meself, m'lady," she says. "Forgive me my clumsiness, but I overheard you speakin' of those evil Equalists, and I lost my footing in surprise and terror."

Lillian nods. "It's all right. Just be careful." She's now suspecting that Mara is an Equalist spy, but she doesn't speak up about it. This isn't a witch hunt.

Ladonna looks over to the servant that picked up her father's empty glass, and whispers to him/her "Bring him some water," she says softly before turning back to her father. "If you are worried about the wedding. A delay isn't a bad thing. It gives me a chance to get to know him a little better since he is staying in Hart anyway," she explains. "I just finished speaking to him, as a matter of fact."

Ladonna "Yes, you've made your feelings on the boy quite clear," Jonas remarks. "I hope you weren't too harsh on him. He's a good lad."
Lillian "Of course, my lady," Mara says, bowing while hugging her empty tray toward her. "And you should be careful, too, especially over who might overhear you saying things that you wouldn't want to become public. Sometimes a room full of nobles is far more dangerous than one of bandits."

"I wasn't mean or harsh at all," Ladonna says with a sigh. "You can go ask him if you want if you don't believe me. I even agreed to dance with him later."

"Oh?" Jonas asks. "What did you come to tell me, anyway?"

"Nothing really. I was just checking on you," Ladonna says. "And I'm glad I did too. You haven't drank in so long," she says, clearly a little disappointed.

"Well, it hardly seems to matter anymore," Jonas replies. "And it's not like I'm good for anything else."

"Father," Ladonna says. "I don't....Yes, ai don't want to get married yet, but it is still probably going to happen rather I like it or not," she says. "If you aren't willing to wait, the only thing I can suggest is that we hold it here in Hart."

"Well, that's just it, isn't it? What I want seems pretty immaterial these days," Jonas says. He sighs and shakes his head. "I'm just tired of having to fight you on every single little thing, Ladonna. We used to be so close, but ever since you got your title, you've acted like you can't stand to be around me, like I'm an annoying joke you've heard too many times. Everything I've done was to help you, to help the family--or what's left of us. But you seem determined to destroy it all, all while insisting your way is better. Well, I'm done. You win. Do whatever you want. I won't get in your way any longer."

Ladonna wants to ask about how close they actually were since she wasn't close to her father before, but she knows she can't. She found herself growing frustrated again. Now he was giving her what she wanted, but at the same time this was her father. "Listen," she finally says. "I'm sorry. Things have not gone well since we got here, a lot of which is my fault," she says. "So, I am going to try to do some of this your way. Can I at least get to know him a little better first?"

"If you think that matters," Jonas replies. "You've already spent more time with him than I did with your mother before we married."
