I'll try to put up a map and a better more detailed post probably tomorrow after work since today after work is grocery shopping typically takes up most of my after work time going, getting and putting away stuff.

Alright now I'm kind of "writer blocked" or DM blocked in that I'm not sure how to continue at this point. They gave me so many guards in the area it might not be very easy for the group to just fight their way in. But trying to come up with a reply from the Sgt. I'm kind of getting stumped.

I'm guessing first decide if he thinks this is a nuisance or a problem. Then decide if he thinks it is worth his time to iron out or not. then how he would deal with it from there.
Adjusted initial reaction tables in the dmg may be of help. With 'hostile' potentially being "you waste my time with this? Go clean the toilets with toothbrushes"

As I can remember it has very little in the way of information compared to other modules I've used it just simply tells me this room has # of guards spread between the hallway and room you are in then more in the next room up. All in all there are going to be at least a dozen or more to face. Not counting if the gnolls or bugbears hear and come running in.

Unless there's a hidden way from to this part of the complex from where the gnolls and the bugbears are lairing, they probably wouldn't notice a fight - there's at least two closed doors and a considerable distance between them and us.
Are all the guards in the module immediately ready for action, or could some of them be off duty and sleeping or at least not wearing their armour?
And the sergeant could always take us at our word and send us on a mission to prove our loyalty.

The way it states it they are all armed and ready no idea why they would be unless this module only expects the players to fight everything like murder hobos.

Well, Gygax wrote this module, so knowing him, he probably did expect us to just fight everything.

You probably are right GG probably expected kill everything players.

Roshek is just basically stalling for time, to see how the Master reacts.
If he accepts our story and is ready to dismiss us, then everybody's guard will probably be down just a little bit, then we can attack. If he doesn't...well, the fight will start on its own. In any case, barricading the door should have a high priority.

The only unfortunate bit is that the only way in this room is guarded on the other side by a good number of guards minus the 2 that came in with you. I think the rough number was 18 guards counting 3 sergeants. Though that bit I think was a botched thing in the module maybe you'd think one was the Captain or Lieutenant and the others would be the next level down officers, so maybe we'll go with that. The one that talked with you is the Lieutenant and the other two were Sergeants. Everyone else is just a regular guard "grunt". The two that came in with the party are wielding an throwing axe and a sword.
