Quite possibly, depends on the tactics used. Already sounds like Daos is thinking to sleep the guards. You never know how the encounter will go. Though I have a rough idea based on characteristics listed in the module and it all depends on the actions the PC's take. In a way they almost have it like a pick your own adventure with how this can go. To an extent. Or I guess more aptly pick your own outcome. If PC's do this NPC's react this way, if PC's go a different route NPC's react in another manner.

If we can take out the major leadership, the others should probably suffer a morale penalty, and in 1st ed and 2nd ed morale is a thing for NPCs.
Also, if we can barricade the door, then we have a secure position and they essentially have to starve us out or try to storm our position, in which case we can bottle them up in the doorway.

Can we get a layout of the room? even if it is just position of the guards relative to us. bow or sword will depend on how likely some chars are to be bogged down in melee immediately. And who gets the sleep spell of course (guards by door? Big bad?

Sure. I can do that. I don't like the room on the map they made it very small but yet indicate 2 guards and the master are in it as well as somehow the whole party can fit in. So I guess a square on the map has to be a lot bigger than 10' x 10' or maybe not that means this room is a 40' x 40' room with a 10' x 10' entryway.

Full disclosure, after the final battle or whatever happens here with the cult master, I don't intend to move into the Temple of Elemental Evil I've kind of lost the love for this particular module. So hopefully that does not dissuade anyone from finishing this out.
I may attempt to run something else entirely that I've run on another forum already. Old Basic D&D modules B11 & B12 maybe B10 as well. depends on interest and so forth.

No worries. T1 is an introductory module, and though it's been ages since I read it, I seem to recall that the actual adventure content is restricted to the moathouse, so there should be no obvious loose ends if we beat the baddies and explore the dungeon as far as possible.
