"...and Tiff had this weird thing for Chromatic Dragons," Daos catches Meine explain. "Said they were just 'misunderstood,' or something. Thank Elshodi she grew out of that one." Valerie giggles.
"Oh, Daos!" she says as he approaches. "Princess Meine was just telling me about her older sister. Did things go well with the prisoners?"

"Let's hope so," Daos answers. In truth, he wasn't entirely sure himself. "I didn't have too much opportunity to speak with Princess Typhania at length, but she seemed a good person, from what I could tell. I think she'll make a good ruler some day."

Meine nods. "Yeah, Tiff's a sharp one. She's always learning about ruling from Dad, or studying history books, or sucking up to the nobles. She's made sure she's well-equipped to handle the crown."

"Speaking of leadership, how do you think Countess Lenkinshire will handle controlling both the Lenkinshire and Cryfold lands by herself?" Daos asks Meine. "She seemed a bit intimidated by the prospect."

The Count exclaims "WHAT?!" in the background.
Ignoring him, Meine sighs deeply. "Yeah, it wasn't really fair of Selena to dump that on her. Wasn't fair to Tiff, either. She needs some practical experience ruling, and she could handle Cryfold's lands well. But as it stand, we've got a Countess Lenkinshire-Cryfold, now." Meine shrugs. "Eh, she'll do all right. Even if it's because her mom, Countess Kartop, is playing ruler-by-mail."

"Wait, are you saying it was Serpentine who decided this? I just assumed she was relaying the king's order," Daos remarks. "Does she really wield that sort of power?"

"Officially, she was," Meine explains. "But Selena...well, Dad's not the sharpest ruler, and he respects her advice. She brings up the issues, she suggests a course of action, he usually accepts it without a second thought. It's like she's the monarch, and she knows it. It's infuriating," she growls.

"And your sister? Do you think she will be a bit more independent than her father?" Daos asks.

"Hopefully. She's less foolish, more headstrong..." Meine says. "Heck, I could even picture Selena treating her as a superior." She pauses, and grimaces. "...no, I couldn't."

"Has the king always deferred to Serpentine, or is this a new development?" Daos asks.

"It's always been--far as I can remember, anyway," Meine explains. "I was only two when she replaced the old Advisor."

"And the queen, your mother?" Daos asks.

"Nah, Mom never liked her. Jealousy, I guess. That's what they said when..." Meine trails off.

Daos pauses at her hesitance. He wasn't entirely sure what happened to the queen, but he did have the impression she was no longer around. And he knew from experience that mothers could be a sore subject. "If it's not something you wish to discuss, I understand," he tells her.
