The party moves through the hallway, and every now and again they can hear what sounds like faint scratching coming from somewhere just beyond their range of sight. Following Gordon, they turn eastward to reach an intersection. To the north, there is a door, shut but unlocked. To the south is a closed portcullis. The iron bars are firmly locked into place, but on the wall, a handle attached to a chain looks as if it will raise it. Above the portcullis is an archway with a carved image of a dwarf holding a drum, with dwarvish runes engraved underneath.

Serafina cautiously goes to study the carved image. She wasn't sure if they should go through the door, or the portcullis. She kind of hoped studying the craved image would help her determine where to go.

Gordon thinks that Serafina's investigations are a bit overly cautious, but he doesn't object. Instead, he reads the Dwarvish runes, trying to see if they give any clues.

Serafina's main takeaway from studying the runes is that she cannot read Dwarvish, no matter how hard she stares at it. Gordon can, however, and is able to translate the runes to read, "and Handil the Drum greeted traders during Balladine…"
Torquato moves over to the unlocked door and puts his ear to it, but hears nothing on the other side.

Inside this room Torquato sees a white-haired man frantically throwing papers into an open burning sarcophagus. Standing around the figure are three skeletons who turn to face him as he peers into the room.

Peeking over Torquato's shoulder, Gordon whispers, "Skeletons? Bah. Bunch of pushovers. You punch 'em in the ribs and they fall into pieces. That mage could be trouble, though--if he is a mage."

"Ah, well, charging it is," Gordon mutters, rushing into battle with a war cry. He moves with incredible speed, hoping to kill two skeletons each with a single blow.

Before anyone can act, the first skeleton leaps forward and stabs Torquato with a short sword, causing the mage to stagger back, his white robes stained with crimson. Serafina holds up her medallion of faith and calls upon Quenesti Pah's power. A flash of white light shines from the icon, and the other two skeletons begin to chatter their teeth in fear. Gordon rushes forward, pushing past Torquato, then completely annihilates the first skeleton with his maul, shattering the skeletal being into hundreds of white shards. He then turns and swings at the second skeleton, but misses. The two remaining skeletons flee to the back corners of the room. Gordon swings at one and misses again, while Astolfo pecks at the other, breaking a few rib bones as it flees. "Wait, stop!" the robed man demands. "I--!" but before he can finish the thought, Torquato sics Astolfo on him. The griffon leaps at the man, knocking him prone and then proceeding to tear and rend the flesh from his bones. The man screams in agony and fear until he dies. Finally, Robin, who was planning to shoot the man himself, instead targets the third skeleton.
