"So, your argument is that people are too stupid to know what's good for them, so a system where the rulers have no accountability to the people is preferable?" Lillian asks.

"Even if that were the case, sounds to me like a good reason to establish public schooling for the entire population," Amara comments.

"Actually, that does sound good," Lillian says, responding to Amara.

"No, that isn't what I'm saying," Ladonna says. "I'm just pointing out the flaw to the electoral system. Unless that flaw is somehow corrected, like with the idea of schools, then the people won't be any better off than what they are now," she explains. "Fighting for all of these rights, honestly, is probably the easier part. Setting up a government so that everything isn't complete chaos after the fighting is probably the hardest part. Not only that, but during that transition phase, our country will be weak. There is a good chance, with all of the other countries that surround us, that one of them might try to swoop in and take over."

"Good point. That, I think, is the advantage changing the system from within has," Lillian says. "I acknowledge that it's much slower, the change is smaller, and it does require you to accept the rules of society and play by them. But on the other hand, the changes it makes are more likely to last."

"Our nation is already weak," Amara says. "The other nations are already sniffing at our doorstep. Calabria tried to stage a coup already, remember? Clearly, the way we are doing things now isn't working."

"And if a rebellious faction ends up taking over, it will be even weaker during that transition period," Ladonna says.

"Uh-huh. So I guess there's nothing to be done, and we just have to accept the status quo forever then. How convenient for you," Amara notes.

Lillian sighs. "You do seem to be saying that, Ladonna," she says.

"Having the Equalists take over does mess with my plans," Ladonna admits. "But it isn't happening anytime soon, so I'm not going to worry about it."

Lillian is both amused and disturbed by the way Ladonna talks about her "plans"--though she knows full well how ambitious she is. "Frankly, I don't think I would mind an Equalist-ruled Tardiff. They'd accomplish all my goals for me."

"Why haven't you ran off to join them, then?" Ladonna asks.

“I’m not sure I’d fit in, there,” Lillian answers. “And I only came to this conclusion recently, so I missed a few good opportunities to join.”
