CH. 01 - Skulking Around

In the chaos of the battle, Granker gets stabbed in the back by another skulk.  Furious, he turns and attacks, killing the creature in two blows.

Kaelestia points out the hidden skulk lighting the fire, but they are still very hard to see.  Parra manages to spot them, though, and casts a spell causing a pair of ghostly hands to wrap around their throat, squeezing.  The skulk ignores this and continues, lighting the kindling.  The flame slowly begins to move toward the kegs of oil.  It will probably take a couple of minutes to reach them, but when it does...

Another skulk backstabs Sha'al, but the Dimernesti is more focused on the fire right now.  He, Sumina and Krenari leap towards where they think the creature is, but all miss.  Kaelestia cuts them with her enchanted scimitar, however.

Parra makes an INT check (+3) to find Skulk 01 (1d20+3):  10+3 = 13, pass.  She then casts Choke on Skulk 01 for 3 rounds and (1d4):  3 damage.  Skulk 01 saves vs. spell (1d20):  20, pass.  They only take half damage (1).

Parra laughed, and then ran to pull away as much kegs as possible away from the fire.

Kaelestia keeps attacking the skulk in front of her, while Krenari will attack the first visible skulk she can find.

Spotting the skulk that backstabbed Sha'al, Granker runs up to it and finishes them off with a one-two combo of his blade and mandoll.  Meanwhile, Parra runs up to the oil filled barrels and tries to pick one up, but it's too heavy for her.  However, he spell finishes off the final skulk, ending the battle as they are choked to death.  While Kaelestia and Krenari look for further targets, Sumina dumps out her waterskin on the flames, and Sha'al takes the good cloak out of his pack to help beat them down, until they are fully extinguished.

Kaelestia sheaths her scimitar before frisking the creatures bodies. - "It seems there is no more of them."

Searching the bodies turns up three simple short swords and a light crossbow, its bolts all spent.  There is also a redwood box, six inches high with a nine-inch square base, decorated with a carved border of roses on the top, with a simple lock on it--the prize the skulks were willing to fight and burn down the ship for, apparently.

"So why were they trying to set this place on fire?" Sumina asks.

Probably to cover the theft. No sign of who sent them... let's clean this up and get these guys above deck. We should probably figure out what thebhell is going on.

Kaelestia takes the box from the dead skulk, and follows Sha'al. - "What kind of creatures were they? I never faced someone like that."

Gathering up the box and the two sailors, the party ascends back onto the deck, where Austin and his men are waiting.  "Are they okay?" Austin asks.  He has some of his men check the unconscious sailors.  "Out cold," one reports.  "I think they were drugged, because they're in deep.  But they should be okay, once it wears off."

"What caused all of this ruckus?" Austin asks.  "We heard shouts and fighting, and smoke started to fill the air.  Is the cargo safe?"
