A flash of panic overcomes Austin's face as he takes the box and, hands shaking, unlocks it with a key. Opening the box reveals five flawless pink-and-blue streaked sapphires. Counting them out, he sighs in relief, then closes the box back up. "Thank the gods. But how would anyone even know about these? Well, no matter. You saved the crew and retrieved the gems, but...the ship has suffered some fire damage. I think it's only fair that we amend our deal to 25 steel pieces each as recompense."

What? 25? No way the fire did that much damage. And if we hadn;t stopped it you'd have nothing left. The ship would have burned down and these two would have died. He says aloud in the presence of other members of Austin's crew. Are your people and the whole of your ship worth so little to you? If you want to deduct damages from someone, go try to figure out who sent the Skulks and how they knew about your baubles. Not the people who saved the lives of your crew-mates. Sha'al adds testily

"What's this about my ship burning down?" asks a short, heavyset man approaching.
Austin blanches and turns to face him. "C-Capt'n! Oh, it's nothing, I...was just...I hired a few extra hands to take care of something, and now they are going on their way."

Sha'al regards the new arrival. I take it by Austin's stuttering blather that this is your ship. Sha'al of the Dark Squall, and these are most of the rest of our crew. He offers his hand, and also introduces the others.
This man offered us a reward to seek out an issue below decks when skme sailors went missing and he didn't have the gall tk handle it himself. Apparently a quartet of Skulks was trying to make off with this box of shine, he indicates the box of gems Austin is holding, And start a fire to burn the ship down with two of your crew there drugged and done-for. He indicates the sailors still out.
We killed the cancerous cuttlefish and prevented the arson, but your... man here wants to re-negotiate now that the work is done and only pay half because of a little singe on the planking. ===

The captain quickly takes the box and checks to make sure the contents are inside. "You know these are for...you-know-who, right?" he asks Austin.
"Of course, capt'n," Austin replies.
"Then these people have done us a great service," the captain says, tucking the box under his arm. "Pay them what you promised." As Austin grumbles, handing each of the party 50 steel pieces, the captain says to the party, "Tell me, what do I call your group?"

Overhearing, the captain says, "The Squall? As in the Dark Squall? Yes, I believe I saw that ship in the harbor. So you are her crew then? Well, I'll be sure to let my various contacts know if they are looking for hired help, to seek out the crew of the Dark Squall then. Assuming, that is, you are looking for work while here in Jennison?"
