Chapter One:
City Of
We opened in Malaika City, a city where fiends walk freely and have unfair social advantages over the mere mortals who dwell there. Azedeth Investigations is a detective agency run by a mysterious human named Mal. It's dedicated to helping the helpless, but it still has bills to pay. The party works for Mal, and they woke up that morning to find him sitting alone in the dark, looking over some papers. He told them there was coffee in the kitchen, but it was awful. And it was, indeed.
Mal revealed that their last client couldn't afford to pay, and their coffers were down to the dregs. He suggested they hit the pavement, looking for new work. As the others discussed the idea, the door opened and a woman in black stepped inside. She introduced herself as Camille Hennequin. She explained that her husband, Edword, died suddenly a week ago. He was perfectly healthy, and the autopsy showed no sign of poison, disease or physical flaws that would have caused this. Edword's family, the Hennequins, own a series of emerald mines to the north and Edword was the heir, ready to inherit it all. But because he and Camille never had children, the fortune will now go to his little brother, Trever, who is five years younger. Camille has been forced out of the Hennequin home and lost everything. However, she still has enough to pay them--about 500 gold pieces.
The party bombarded her with questions about Edword, Trever, the Hennequins, and the family business. Eventually, they decided they had five possible leads. The morgue where the body still was, the guildhall to investigate business rivals, the Hennequin home to interview family, the smoking club that Edword was said to often visit, and the brothel where Trever was said to often visit. They discussed splitting up, but then decided to start at the morgue together, and figure things out from there.
As the party headed to the Academic Sector, where the temple with the morgue was, they encountered a group of gamblers heading to the local casino, the Ruby Queen. The party was immediately on guard, deeply suspicious of these strangers. The gamblers wanted to entice the party to join them, hoping they could win more gold that way. The party turned them down, believing it was probably a con job and they didn't have time anyway. After they left, Sylas reported that he had heard of the Ruby Queen, and it was said the place was run by a Drow woman, so probably not a great place to try and cheat. Zemora found that fact interesting, although Nerisse was put off by it.
The party reached the gate leading to the Academic Sector, where two ONK guards asked their business. They said they wanted to go to the Blaze of Passion Temple there, but the guards wanted to know why they didn't just visit the local temple in the Labor Sector. Zemora bored them with a lot of legalese, so they let the party pass just to get rid of them.
Facing no encounters on the way, they reached the Blaze of Passion temple and entered it, asking for directions from a priest to the morgue. Tukgruff and especially Ellasandra felt uncomfortable in a temple of Renos, but did their best to weather it.
In the morgue, they met Anise, the human mortician and coroner (who did not appreciate being confused for a priest). She allowed them to examine the body of Edword, and they came to the same conclusion she did--that he did not die from wounds, poison, disease, or any physical ailments. The party questioned Anise a bit, then left the temple. They decided they would split up. Ellasandra and Zemora would head for the Hennequin manor and speak with the family, while Nerisse, Tukgruff and Sylas would go to the guildhall and check for business rivals to question.
The two groups made their way to their respective gates. On the way, both overheard people talking. Ellasandra and Zemora (who were both discussing that they think the widow is actually guilty), overheard two students discussing a fellow student, Hara, who apparently vanished mysteriously. They approached to get more details. They then headed on to the next gate. Ellasandra openly told the guards the truth of what they were doing, but the guard misunderstood and thought she was working for the Hennequins (not the widow of their son), and let them pass through easily.
Meanwhile, Nerisse, Tukgruff and Sylas overheard two goodwives gossiping about Blackstaff, the most powerful mage in the city. Nerisse interrupted and disquieted the pair a bit before leaving. When they reached the gate, Nerisse claimed she was looking to buy some expensive gems as spell components. This made the guard think she was rich and he demanded to see her gold. Tukgruff told him no, which upset him and he threatened to have the three arrested. Sylas managed to smooth things over, revealing how little coin they actually had. The guards were disappointed and let them pass, although Tukgruff noticed his pouch was a few coins lighter.
As Ellasandra and Zemora wandered the Ruler Sector, a pair of ONK tieflings approached, offering to escort them where they were going and protect them from any ornery fiends. At first, Ellansandra was dismissive, but then she changed her attitude and started flirting with the guard. The guards, Jafari and Ashon, accompanied the party to the Hennequin manor without incident. Jafari flirted and bragged, and Ashon mostly just sullenly stayed quiet. Ellasandra tried to dismiss the guards, but they insisted on sticking around outside, not too far off. The two then approached the guards at the gate, but were rebuffed.
Nerisse, Tukgruff and Sylas wandered the Merchant Sector at the same time. Sylas noticed a gnome stealing in the market, but ignored her. He instead bought a whip at a local weapon shop. The three then noticed a Hennequin's Jewelry so entered, questioning the shopkeep about the store's rivals. She didn't know much about them, but did know this store used to belong to one, before the Hennequins bought it out and made it part of their chain. The three departed the shop just in time to watch two ONK guards beat up the same gnome Sylas spotted earlier for stealing. Deciding it was best to not get involved, they moved on the guildhall. There they met a human woman named Elena who agreed to take them to the historical records, although she seemed a bit skeptical of their motives. Nerisse discovered the Hennequins had bought out just about every one of their competitors except two--Mhina's Minerals and Diamonds in the Rough. Elena also supplied additional info, like that Edword had been planning on killing his family's plan for a total monopoly on the gem market.
Ellasandra and Zemora stepped away, and were approached by Ashon and Jafari, the latter of whom was eager to help. In a bid to impress Ellasandra, Jafari offered to get them inside. Ashon also revealed that apparently Edword was the third person to suddenly die of a heart attack in as many weeks in the Ruler Sector. The other two were a business owner and a politician. Jafari intimidated the guards into letting them inside, but once there they met with an elderly Hennequin, presumably Edword's father, and he quickly put them in their place by dropping the name of the police chief. He was not particularly cooperative, but claimed that Camille was only interested in Edword for his money, and was trying to take over their business for herself.
Nerisse, Tukgruff and Sylas headed to Mhina's Minerals, which they found in bad shape. The store was clearly going out of business, and there was little inventory or customers. Mhina was eager to see them, until they revealed they were not there to shop. She admitted she was selling her shop to the Hennequins soon, as she could not compete with their prices. They could afford to take a hit, but she could not. Nerisse theorized the Hennequins would make up for the loss once they had a full monopoly and could then raise their prices to whatever they wanted.
After leaving the Hennequin manor, Ashon and Jafari wandered off in a daze, worried about their jobs. Zemora and Ellasandra decided to check out the Smoke Lounge. They were stopped by a bouncer, who said only members could enter. Zemora tried to bluff, claiming they were reporters. The bouncer told them reporters were definitely not allowed inside.
Nerisse, Tukgruff and Sylas then went to Diamonds in the Rough, the other remaining jewelry shop. It was also on hard times, but the owner, Bherek Onyxguard, was far more stubborn about it. He claimed he refused to sell to the Hennequins. The party hoped he would dish out dirt on the Hennequins then, but he admitted that if he had any dirt, he'd have used it already. He was also skeptical that the Hennequins could be held accountable for anything they did, because they were so rich and powerful.
Annoyed, Zemora and Ellasandra headed for the Blue Nocturne, a high-class bordello. Along the way, they discussed their theories. Zemora believed that Edword's parents had him killed, since he was just a lowly male anyway. Ellasandra was skeptical, as humans value men more than drow do, and believed it was actually the younger brother. The bouncer of the bordello let them in (taking their weapons first), and the two went to speak with the madam of the house.
However, Zemora kept trying to haggling on price, which gave away she was not really a client or a citizen of the Ruler Sector. Ellasandra dropped their premise of being customers and instead just asked for information about Trevor. But the madam wasn't going to discuss clients with strangers. Ellasandra tried to bribe her with 20 gold, which she found amusing. But she was in need of a discreet healer, so agreed to make a deal with them. But first, she wanted to know exactly what information the two were seeking. Zemora asked about the other heart attack victims. The madam misunderstood and blurted out that nobody had died of heart attacks in the brothel in years, and the girl responsible was sacked. Curious, they wanted to know more about that.
The madam escorted them to a private room where a young woman, likely still in her teens, was clearly sick and delirious. She insisted on not going to a temple, so she wanted Zemora to heal her. Ellasandra asked her to step out of the room, then used her paladin powers to cure the girl's disease. The madam then held up her part of the bargain, explaining that two years ago they had a new girl join them named Therica. Two of her johns died suddenly while visiting her, and it turned out she was secretly a succubus and was draining them dry. So she was fired, and the madam had not seen or heard from her since then.
Ellasandra claimed her sister, Isabella, knew more about succubi. The pair then met up with the others in front of the mayoral manor and compared notes. The party considered that Edword may have also died of a succubus--possibly the same one, Therica, who worked at the brothel. However, Ellasandra believed that Camille was the succubus. Regardless, the party decided to return to the Blaze of Passion temple to try and investigate the other deaths.
As they approached the northern gate to return to the Academic Sector, they came across some kind of political rally. A half-drow man was addressing a small crowd of fiends from a stage, urging equality and justice for all the races. This was not going over well. A foppish tiefling stepped forward and sort of hijacked the rally, claiming the strong should control the weak. Tukgruff threw a tomato at him, which caused the ONK to move in. Only when they were about to grab him did he finally turn invisible to escape their grasp. The tiefling, Alastair Talbot, used the incident to proclaim his own run for mayorship, causing the half-drow to storm off.
The party quickly moved on, the invisible Tukgruff following. Once they made it back to the Academic Sector, they continued toward the Blaze of Passion Temple. However, as the sun set, they spotted three shady figures--a fire genasi woman, a human man, and a teenage human girl, all wearing the robes of mage--step into an alley. Suspicious, Tukgruff followed after them, still invisible. He witnessed what appeared to be a drug deal going down. The girl was selling some kind of vial of blue glowing liquid to the two mages.
Tukgruff reported to the group. They decided to break it up, so the party headed into the alley. The mages didn't appreciate the interruption and threatened the party. However, they would not back down. Nerisse taunted them, while Ellasandra questioned them on the drug (soulbliss), what it does (enhances arcane power) and if it had any side-effects (supposedly not). The girl, calling herself Hera, claimed to be the creator and sole source of soulbliss, but Nerisse did not believe her. Eventually, the party hit something of a stalemate with them and let them go. However, Tukgruff (still invisible) attempted to tail Hera back to Blackstaff Academy.
The rest of the party continued to the temple and met with Anise again. She confirmed that two men died two years ago at the bordello, both of supposed heart attacks--a wealthy merchant and a young Gontorian ambassador of some kind. Anise also confirmed it was theoretically possible these men died of a succubus kiss, as it would leave behind no evidence.
The party decided to return to the hotel, and so set off toward the Labor Sector. On their way to the gate, however, they were stopped by a mysterious stranger cloaked heavily and with a strange sounding voice. They offered a puzzle that could only be solved by a genius, and a great reward to anyone who could do so. Nerisse was eager to try, but immediately was stumped. Zemora tried next, but had no better luck. The stranger thanked them and moved on. The party continued toward the Azedeth.
Upon arriving, they met with Mal and Isabella, discussing their theories and what clues and leads they had found. They discarded the theory that Camille was the succubus, but instead leaned toward the idea that Trever hired the former prostitute to do it. They then discussed ideas on how to get a confession out of him. But first, they needed to find him. Mal went out to shake down his local contacts, to see if Trever ever shows up in the Labor or Slums Sectors. Meanwhile, Ellasandra asked to speak with Isabella in private. Sylas volunteered to do a food run while they waited for Mal to return.
After they ate, Mal returned and told them that he has learned Trever sometimes visits the Silent Sin, an inn in the Labor Sector where unsavory types like to do business in the shadows. Violence is not allowed, and conversations can be held in private. But he warned them to be careful what they say around the innkeeper, as she has an excellent memory.
The party headed for the Silent Sin and met with the innkeeper, a tiefling woman named Kyr Velindra Duskveil. She knew of Trever but would only accept coin or secrets in payment for her services. Zemora offered the knowledge of a new drug on the street, soulbliss, which Kyr found very interesting. So in exchange, she told them Trever regularly visited to meet with some lawyer from Kulak Barristers at Law. And in fact, he was likely to meet her again this very night, perhaps in an hour. The party decided to wait until his meeting started, then send the still invisible Tukgruff in to spy on him.
Eventually Trever arrived and went into his usual booth. The party hid in a nearby booth. Tukgruff went into Trever's booth while invisible, but the lawyer was immediately able to spot him. He ran away. The party had no idea how to proceed, so just sat there until the meeting ended and the two left. At that point, they decided to follow Trever, except for Tukgruff, who went after the lawyer. The lawyer seemed well aware of Tukgruff's pursuit, and led him straight to the Kulak Barristers at Law building.
Meanwhile, the others pursued Trever and confronted him, trying to force him to confess. But he refused. Confounded by this turn of events, the party just stood there until he walked away. Eventually, they gave up and returned to the hotel.
At the same time, Tukgruff decided to sneak into the law offices, but as soon as he did, his invisibility dispelled due to some kind of warding on the entrance. The receptionist asked him what he wanted, and he claimed to be the new exterminator. The receptionist was surprised any more were hired, after the last few died, and directed him to the basement. Tukgruff demanded details of the job he claimed to already have, which made the receptionist suspicious. He then fled before security could be called, returning to the hotel.
Once back at the Azedeth, he reported he had found the succubus assassin, which puzzled the party (he assumed the lawyer was the succubus). After a bit of questioning, they realized the lawyer was actually an Erinyes, a devil not a demon.
The following morning they met wtih Camille and told her all they learned. True to her word, she gave them 500 gold pieces. Mal took half for upkeep of the hotel, and the rest was split among the party--50 gold each.
