I figgure this is probably the best place to ask, since you guys are really into old school D&D and the like.
My husband played D&D while he was in High School (1976-1980ish?) and has fond memories of it. He always has spoken fondly of both his gaming experience and the quality of the books he had. I say had, because his first wife, in one of her fits of Baptist indignation destroyed his books (amg, tehy're teh ebil!!!!). He had Dieties and Demigods, the Player's Handbook and a Monster Manual. Hubby has said a few times that he wishes he still had those books.
Unluckily for me, both his birthday and Christmas are in the same month. What's harder than buying for a man? Buying for a man twice in the same month. So, I was considering replacing those books, but, I'm not even sure what edition they were. Hubby says they were first edition books, but, I think he was referring to the printing, not the ruleset.
So, I was wondering if you guys had any ideas which books they might be, or could point me in the direction of some sort of D&D library to take a stab at figuring it out? If nothing else, maybe you might have a few ideas on at least which ruleset it might have been?
Thanks for any help at all. I'd ask hubby more questions, but, he's a bit hazy on the details and I don't want to tip my hand.

I don't suppose you know what the covers looked like? That's a sure fire way of identifying them.

As a post script, thank you guys so much for the help! The editions you pointed me towards were the right ones. I was able to score a Monster Manual and PHB off of Amazon.com for a reasonable price.
The MM arrived in pristine condition. The PHB, sadly, met a rather unfortunate fate when the postal carrier, seeing that the parcel, clad in only cardboard, that it was raining, and no one apparently at home to recieve the package.... decided to leave it sitting next to the mailbox, instead of walking it to the door and leaving it under the semi dry overhang. We were able to salvage the book to some extent, but, it still suffered a good deal of water damage.
But, most importantly, they were the right books and hubby loved them! Thanks a ton again for a) giving me the idea and b) pointing me in the right direction.

Glad we could help! Too bad about the water damage, though.
