Appearance: Marcus is a lean and muscular man with short black hair that is often slicked back, and hazel eyes. He has a light, white scar across his left cheek. He generally wears a sardonic grin on his face.
Marcus often wears dark colors. He wears a suit of chain mail with a black cloak that is crimson on the reverse side. He has a shield with a red skull painted on its face, but he doesn't use it very often.
Although he has a club he uses with his shield from time to time, his preferred weapon is an enchanted glaive. The shaft is black and the blade itself seems to be made from some kind of dense steel that is still remarkably lightweight and incredibly sharp. Unfamiliar runes are carved lightly into the blade itself.
Personality: Marcus is something of a jackass, and he will admit as much. He is generally only out for himself, although he has been known to risk his life for his friends. However, when asked about, he will often claim an ulterior motive, like that the recipient owed him money.
There is a softer side to him, but he does everything in his power to keep it hidden. Marcus believes only the strong can thrive, while the weak are dominated. Compassion, mercy, and love are weaknesses that can be exploited. Despite this, he is fairly loyal to his friends. He has found that perfect balance of malice where he's a pain in the ass but not so much that the others ditch him.
Marcus also has a superiority complex and is fairly racist. Although he makes an exception for Gimak, who has more than proven himself in Marcus' eyes, he nevertheless tends to look his nose down on dwarves, elves, kender, and the other 'lesser races.'
Combat: Marcus is a fierce opponent, never letting up and always looking for the upper-hand. He prefers two-handed weapons, like his glaive. Power is more important than speed, in his opinion.
Marcus will use any advantage he can achieve in the battlefield. He will bluff, cheat, fight dirty, ambush--whatever it takes. He does not believe in taking prisoners unless they have something to offer him, like information. Even after extracting it, he prefers to kill the prisoner anyway, just to be safe.
History: Marcus was born to simple farmers, Rallen and Finna. He has a sister two years older than him named Alyana and a brother two years younger than him named Trey. He also has a cousin named Favian who often helps out on the farm.
Marcus was never pleased with his lot in life, however. He dreamed of glory, riches, fame, and power. The life of a farmer bored him, and so did Solace in general. He also didn't like how people treated him--like they were better than him because he was poor.
When he became a young man, he found himself drawn to Gimak. Gimak was an outsider, a dwarf, and an adventurer. He was not like the 'salt of the earth' types he was used to. This was a man who had killed--goblins, ogres, sligs, even people. Marcus found himself fascinated by Gimak's tales, particularly the gory ones.
Gimak must have recognized the boy had some potential, because he offered to train him in the martial arts. Marcus excelled under the dwarf's tutelage, but the old warrior often criticized Marcus for being too brutal at times.
Since the Cataclysm, bandits often attacked anyone who dared leave the relative safety of the towns. So when Gimak was called away from home for any reason, he started bringing Marcus, Arvin, Daos, and Amala with him. Marcus was grateful for the chance to prove himself, as well as see the world outside of the valenwood trees of Solace.
Later on, other people joined the group including Barlemus, Marik, and Kendra. In time, they became known as "Gimak's Companions."
In 346 AC, Gimak asked the group to split up and seek out signs of the return of the true gods. Marcus did not believe the old gods were returning, but he was eager to go out on his own and prove himself as a warrior. The group took an oath to return five years later and report what they had found.
Marcus traveled north with Amala for a time, but the two parted ways in Solamnia, and Marcus headed east toward Blode.
