The man had been drinking from a mug at the time. He lowered it to the bar and wiped his mouth with his wrist. "I am. What's it to you, stranger?" he asked, turning to face her. He had short black hair cut in the traditional military style. His eyes were green. The man was overall average in appearance, although he did have the physique of a warrior. His chin had the scruff of beard common to those who have not shaved in several hours.

"It was just a start to hopefully a conversation," Raine said with a charming smile. "I'm Raine by the way, so technically that doesn't make me a stranger anymore."

"Karn," the man said simply. He looked to be in his late twenties, if Raine was any judge. He took another leisurely drink from his mug. "And by stranger, I meant you aren't from around here."
He gave her an appraising look, top to bottom. "You don't look like a merchant. And you aren't an escaped slave from the other side of the river. So it makes me wonder...what are you doing here in Dekan, Miss Raine?"

"Adventure, excitement, whatever I can find," Raine said with a light laugh. "One could say I'm a bit of a treasure hunter, and I heard rumor there is treasure nearby. I thought I would check it out."

"Treasure?" Karn asked, his brows raised. "What treasure is that? I've heard nothing of any treasure. As for adventure, well I suppose there is that. This place is the last bastion of freedom in the western plains. Beyond the river is the Empire, and we alone are the only defense against them should they turn their sights here."

"Well, it doesn't have a name, and it is only rumor that I'm working on," Raine admitted. "But before I can search for my long lost treasure, I have to find a steady source of income," she admitted. "But there are a list of rules in this place that are as long as my leg that I'm just not sure what is safe to do."

Karn scratched at his whiskers. "Well, the town guard is always hiring, if you can handle that blade on your hip. Although you look kind of scrawny to me," he adds rudely. "Otherwise, depends on what you can do."

"I'm more of a...free spirit, so the whole guard thing wouldn't work out," Raine admitted. "Too many rules, and don't let appearances fool you. I can do wonders," she assured the man with confidence.

Karn shrugs, impressed. "Well, I don't know what to tell you then." He finishes his drink, tosses a couple of coins on the counter, then stands up, picking up his helm and tucking it under his arm.
"But if you need a strong arm to help you get that treasure, let me know. I expect 50% of the cut, though."

"I'll keep that in mind, handsome," Raine said. "Enjoy your time on duty," she added with a small wave. There were a couple of other people she could talk to at this point, but she decided to at least finish her meal first.

Karn stepped out, leaving Raine to finish her meal. When she was done, another person stepped inside. She was a halfling with a slender form and the face of an angel. Strands of curly brown hair dropped down to the shoulders of an emerald colored dress that fit her tiny form perfectly.
She took a seat in the back and waved to the bartender for a drink.
The halfling sleeping in the chair snoozed quietly, and the woman traveler kept to herself at the bar, nursing a half-empty mug. It was full when Raine entered the tavern.
After bringing the newcomer a drink, Isla took Raine's empty dish and mug to the back, then busied herself by wiping down the bar.

Raine watched the newcomer curiously. Naturally, she wouldn't have thought someone like her would be in a tavern like this. She looked too sweet. That had to be an act. No one was ever that sweet.
Absently, Raine pushed herself away from the bar, and casually walked over to the angel looking halfling. "Afternoon," she said cheerfully. "Mind if I join you?"

The halfling woman gives Raine an appraising look. Raising an eyebrow, she shrugs. "No law against it, I suspect."
Isla brings the halfling a mug and the halfling hands her a few coins in payment. The bartender then goes about, checking on her few other customers.

Raine took a seat in front of the halfling. "I'm Raine," she said, introducing herself. "You're going to have to forgive me, but you don't look like the type that would visit a tavern all too often."

"Takes all types, doesn't it?" she asks. "I'm Miri. And sometimes things aren't always what they seem. Humans tend to have trouble grasping that one, for some reason."
