Zurgrim chats with Hazel and Shanson (assuming they're not busy doing something else) as he eats his meal. Unless either of them bring up news of note, he'll politely excuse himself when he finishes and step back outside.
With few responsibilities to see to today, Zurgrim decides to take a leisurely walk about town. Perhaps he'll find some friends to talk with, or even better, share a drink with. Or maybe something else interesting will happen...he's been alive long enough to know that idle days rarely stay idle for long.

Ladonna and Rivi (Lonely Pony Tavern) Ryan pays for his meal and then steps out. "Thank you very much!" Rebekah calls out to him as he leaves. After he's gone, she says, "Damn, a whole silver for a tip. I guess even the acolytes live well." She puts the coins away.
Meanwhile, Anara the druidess gets up, pays for her own meal and steps out without a word. Meaning the only patrons left are Ladonna, Rivi and Lantrin Locke the village cooper/wheelwright.
Ryan McIntyre (Village Square) Ryan pays for his meal, including an entire silver piece as a tip, then steps out. "Thank you very much!" Rebekah calls out to him as he leaves. He makes his way westward, passing through the village square in the process. It's about 10 AM by this point. He sees that the pillory is once again surrounded by young people. They aren't throwing anything this time, except for one person. Damon Auger, the son of the late hero Sandon Auger, is throwing small rocks at Tavos. The half-elf is bloodied and bruised from the few that have actually hit--Damon's aim doesn't seem terribly accurate. The children cheer him on. As the son of the Hero of Buho, Damon is rather powerful, politically speaking, even if he is only 20 years old.
Zurgrim Jarnvisk (Buho Inn) As he sits and eats, Zurgrim listens in on Hazel's and Shanson's gossip. As they run the only inn in the village, all strangers and passersby come through their place--if not for a room for the night, then at least for a quick meal before hitting the road again. Consequently, while the taverns are the best place for local gossip, the inn is the best place for word on what's outside the village. The two talk about several things, particularly about the capital city. Rumor is, the queen is becoming increasingly paranoid about foreigners in the capital. Her husband and two of her sons died recently. While the official story is that a sickness took them, there is a rumor that they were actually assassinated. Tardiff has been at an uneasy peace with its neighbors for over a century now, but if things keep going at their current rate, we may be at war again soon. The only question is, with who?
(OOC: If you want to discuss this with them you can, otherwise he can move on.)

Ladonna watches as Ryan leaves, then stands from the bar. "Well, I guess I should take my leave too. Other than the council meeting this evening, do you know of anything else going on today, Rebekah?" she asks.

(OOC: sure, Zurgrim likes to talk, so he'll stay around!)
"War... Zurgrim sighs unhappily. "I suppose that's the way the world works. It doesn't matter how the king and the princes died, and it doesn't why the queen is getting peery of outsiders. If the neighboring countries sense a problem, they'll come sniffing around soon enough."
Zurgrim stacks his plate and utensils neatly to make it easier to carry away and wash. "So, if war is coming, we'll want to know who we're going to be fighting with. Are ya sure ya haven't heard anything? Someone must have come by who's heard some rumors at least, ya know?"

Ladonna and Rivi (Lonely Pony Tavern)Rebekah shakes her head. "Not that I've heard," she replies. "Nor I," Gerald adds with a heavy sigh of ennui. "Anyway, we better get ready for the lunch crowd," Rebekah says. "Enjoy your day off." Zurgrim Jarnvisk (Buho Inn)"If you believe the rumors, we'll be at war with all of them within a few seasons," Hazel replies. Hazel Frye was born in this village 61 years ago, and is now one of the members of the Village Council. A caring, friendly woman, she is considered the best cook in all of the barony. Her braised cabbage is spoken of by merchants in cities 50 miles away (although it has been said to produce unpleasant gastrointestinal side effects in dwarves). "Some say the Picardians are the ones who sent the assassins, because if the queen's line is wiped out, then her sister who is half-Picardian herself, will become the new queen," Hazel explains. "Others say it was the Kavalans, still angry about the War of Drakes and seeking revenge for the death of one of their own. Another rumor is that it is the Swadians, angry that the queen rejected one of their own and married a Tardish man instead. Others point the blame at the Calabrians, citing that they are all thieves and pirates anyway and are probably looking to cause chaos here so they can swoop in and fill their coffers. Although if you ask me, the smart coin is on the Ruaran Elves. Their spies are everywhere, and they're always looking for a way to bring down the great human nations so they can take back their land."

Ryan strides directly toward Damon until the youth looks at him. He then issues the command to "FLEE"

"Thanks," Ladonna says. She waves to those that she was talking to, and leaves the tavern. Out of curiosity, Ladonna heads to the barracks simply to see who might be locked up, if anyone is at all.

"Yeah, but the elves aren't the only ones that might be behind things," Zurgrim replies. "It seems to me that 'taking back their land' isn't as likely as 'we can make some money', I don't know. Or revenge, too. And if that's the deal, any of the human nations are just as likely." Zurgrim thinks things over for a moment. "Money and revenge, they hold more water than reclaiming former glory ever does, though. So what makes ya think it's the elves, then?"

Ladonna Marche (Barracks)Ladonna heads to the barracks, which are very close to the Lonely Pony so she doesn't have to go very far. Surrounded by a stout palisade of heavy logs, the barracks is constructed of large undressed blocks of gray stone, with a tile roof. It is only one story in height, with the only openings being crossletted arrow slits spaced at regular intervals in each wall and a stout oaken door, reinforced with iron bands and studs. The building serves as a barracks for the twenty-four village watchmen and their commanders, as an office for Ser Derica Walls the Reeve, and as a temporary prison for holding miscreants until they are publicly flogged, put in stocks, or otherwise punished. Outside, in the courtyard, her father trains several of the young men and women in the militia. "Pair up, and go into your fighting stances," Jonas tells them. "We're going to practice our swordplay. You never know when the goblins might form another army and come at us. Or some other vile enemy might appear. As the watch, we must always be ready." Stepping inside the barracks, Ladonna finds herself in a guardroom with 12 sets of 2 bunks; two doors are set into wooden, interior walls to the left and right. The doors on the left give access to the watch captain’s quarters and the reeve’s office, and those on the right open into the sergeant’s quarters and the cell. The walls of the cell are brick, and border against the exterior walls and the wooden walls indoors. The door is identical to the entry door, but has a key lock and two oaken bars that can be put in place on the barracks side. The cell is capable of holding five prisoners, or twice that number if they are to be held only for a short time. Peering inside, however, she does not see any prisoners currently. Rivi (Lonely Pony Tavern)Rivi considers where to go next. He can head west to the blacksmith, the Goblin's Tooth, the watchtower and the temple of Gonto. To the north is the village square, the graveyard, the mill, the potter, the trading post and the grocer. To the east are the weaver, the inn, the woodworker, and the cobbler/woodcutter. To the south is the dairy farm and the stables. He could also go to the other side of the village where the cooper/wheelwright, weaponsmith and armorer are. Ryan McIntyre (Village Square)When Damon notices Ryan approach, he grins. "Come to join in the fun?" he asks. "He actually shat himself. Let's see if we can make him do it again." However, rather than comply, Ryan issues a monosyllabic command. Generally, Damon is not one to be told what he can or cannot do by anyone, but the word is backed by divine power. Unable to resist, Damon suddenly drops the rock he is holding and bolts at full speed to the west. The children, puzzled by what just happened and not sure what to do, follow after him. "My thanks...again," Tavos says from the pillory. His words are slurred a bit due to his cheek having swollen up from being hit with a rock. "But you might regret that later. Once he comes to his senses...Damon isn't the sort you want to make an enemy of. Believe me, I know." ========== Ryan casts Command on Damon, no save. Damon flees for 1 round. Zurgrim Jarnvisk (Buho Inn)"Elves cannot be trusted," Hazel points out. "Always scheming, always looking for a cheap, easy way to get what they want. Never ones to work for a living. They'd love nothing more for all of the human nations to get into a war and wipe each other out." "I heard the Equalists were involved," Shanson adds. "That they are the pawns of whoever is behind the assassinations, either knowingly or unknowingly. And that this power is egging the Equalists on to cause chaos within our borders." Besides being an innkeeper, Shanson also brews his own ale and serves on the Village Council. Shanson is a wiry man with reddish skin. The top of his head is mostly bald, but uncombed white hair sprouts angrily from lower points on his head. He jokingly calls it his “backward tonsure,” adding that his baldness is a message from Gonto that he should never be a monk. At 63 years old, he and his wife have been running this inn since before Zurgrim moved to the village. They never had any children of their own, though.

"Oh, I don't know about that," Zurgrim replies to Hazel's statement. "After all, I've heard more than once that dwarves can't be trusted either, sure. My guess is that there's trustworthy elves and untrustworthy ones, just like with dwarves and humans, so."
Zurgrim takes a little longer to consider Shanson's point than he did Hazel's. Finally, he ventures, "The Equalists, I don't know. Maybe they're involved and maybe not. I hear that some might resort to such ends, but are they really all that bad? I mean, a dwarf could do worse than give everybody the same chances whether they're noble or not."
