It's a beautiful summer morning in Buho Village, a peaceful farming community. The sun is shining and there's nary a cloud in the sky. It's not too hot yet, but by midday it should be comfortably warm. It's Agate 29th, Frostday in the year 312 and it's 7 AM.
(OOC: Spellcasters can pick new spells today. Check the Character Stats thread to see which spells are available and how many slots you have to fill. You're free to do what you like for now, just get a feel for the village and its people. If you want to find someone specific (check the People and Places thread for a map of the village and a list of the more important NPCs), just ask and I'll tell you where they are likely to be found at this time of day.)
Ladonna Marche (Marche Residence) Ladonna wakes up in her small, one-room house. She shares it with her little sister and her two parents. Her father, Jonas, is a sergeant for the militia. However, he only just barely makes enough coin for the four of them. Her mother doesn't work at all, nor does her sister, Felicia. But Felicia will soon be getting married to a wealthy merchant, which should bring in quite a bit of coin and remove one mouth to feed.
It's a lovely summer day, which means there will be plenty of thirsty people coming to the Lonely Pony today. But Ladonna is off today, so she needn't worry about that unless she wants to. Her father gets up and starts putting on his armor to head out to begin his day at work. Her mother and sister begin preparing breakfast. Ladonna was awake before any of them, studying her secret spellbook. She keeps it hidden under a loose floorboard in the house. Every morning she wakes up before her family, studies it in secret, then hides it away again. Today was no different.
Rivi Wolfright (Wolfright Residence) Rivi wakes up alone in his small one-room cabin. But he was used to this. He's been alone almost as long as he can remember. As both a half-elf and a bastard, he would likely always be alone. Such was the way of things.
After getting dressed and washing up in the basin, he cracked open his secret spellbook to study his spells for the day. He was off today at the Lonely Pony, so he had the whole day to himself to do whatever he wished. Looking out the window, he could see it was a wonderful summer day, so the possibilities were limitless.
Ryan McIntyre (McIntyre Residence) Ryan wakes up that morning in his small, one-room house with his mother. She starts working on breakfast while Ryan cleans up, get dressed, and studies and prays for new spells. His father hadn't been around in four months now, but the summer festival was coming up and hopefully he would find time to stop by then.
Normally Ryan would need to report to the temple for training, but today was his off day so he could do what he liked. Glancing out the window, he could see it was going to be a beautiful day--sunshine and clear skies.

(Spells for the day: Charm, Sleep)
Ladonna walks up behind her father, after he is done putting on his armor for the day, and hugs him from behind. "Good morning, daddy," she says cheerfully. It was pretty routine for Ladonna to greet her father first in the morning.

Ryan sits down to breakfast and quickly shovels in about half of it before he pauses. "Do you think Dad will come home for the festival?" Not really expecting a real answer, he idly adds, "I don't understand why we don't just move with him."
Frustrated as usual he wolfs down the rest of his food before asking, dutifully. "What chores do you have for me this morn Mom?"
Command, CLW, Detect Magic, Color Spray

Ladonna Marche (Marche Residence)"Morning," Jonas replies casually, while adjusting his gloves. Ever since Ladonna refused to get married, her relationship with her father had cooled a bit. Not quite as bad as with her mother, but it was noticeable. This was further highlighted when Felicia greets him and he breaks into a smile, gives her a big hug and calls her 'princess.' Jonas Marche is a 40 year old man who is still the quintessential warrior, even if his dark hair is beginning to grey a bit. He has fair skin and blue eyes, like his daughter. As sergeant of the watch, his job is to train the recruits. Ever since the Battle of Buho 20 years ago, the watch has been in charge of the village's defense. Although there have been no further goblin attacks since then, defenses are always maintained. Rivi Wolfright (Edge of Hartwood Forest)After eating a bit of oatmeal, Rivi gathers up all of his gear and heads to the edge of the Hartwood Forest. The forest was dangerous, if one went too deep. Goblin tribes still dwell there, as well as other dangerous beasts. But as long as he stayed on the outskirts, he should be fine. Even the goblins avoided coming too close to the village these days. Once, the goblin tribes were all united under a single banner and they nearly did wipe out the village. But their leader was slain and their forces scattered and twenty years later, they formed a bunch of smaller tribes that spend their time warring with each other instead. He quickly works up a sweat while doing his morning workout. Nobody bothers him in the forest, so it was a good place to practice. But more than that, he felt an odd connection to the woods. He barely remembered his elven mother, but the scents of the forest somehow reminded him of her. Ryan McIntyre (McIntyre Residence)"His last letter said he would try to attend," Ryan's mother replies as Ryan gulps down his oatmeal. "And it's just not practical. You wouldn't have time for your studies and training if we were moving all of the time. Your father is always on the move. Besides, some of his missions are dangerous. If we were with him, he'd always be distracted and worried about keeping us safe. He knows nothing bad will happen here in Buho." Things had been strained between Ryan and Judy the past few years. It seemed like the longer his father was away, the harder it was to keep the family from falling apart. Judy McIntyre is a 39 year old woman and a journeyman sorceress. She has long, dark brown hair, green eyes and fair skin. She is also the only mage in the village, aside from Ryan who is still an apprentice. She works for the church, serving as a scholar, clerk, historian and on occasion, an expert on the arcane. She's always been more interested in research than in practical application of magic and is quite content to live in this boring, backwater village if she can spend her days at the temple library. She was only an apprentice when the Battle of Buho occurred, and still pregnant with Ryan at the time. But today, it was difficult to imagine her as a badass young woman, throwing spells at goblins while with child. "There is one thing you could do for me," Judy says. "Could you stop by Rakit's and see if you can get me some extra ink? The Village Council is meeting tonight at the inn and the kohen has asked me to record the minutes and my vial is almost empty."

Ladonna narrows her eyes ever so slightly at her sister. ~Every morning...~ She thinks to herself. Every morning she would greet her father, and every morning she got a cold response where as her sister got all the love. With a roll of her eyes, she walks over to the dinning table and sits down. "What's for breakfast?" She asks in her ever cheerful voice. ~Providing they even remember they have another daughter,~ She thinks to herself.

Ryan listens, not quite agreeing. "I sure hope so, it has been a while." He doesn't really sound convincing, the words drip from his mouth. As his Mother asks her chore of the day, his face brightens for a bit. "There's a meeting tonight!, I almost forgot. Of course, I'll have some tonight." Ryan gathers his stuff before he heads out. "I'll be back before dark." he says.
With that he exits the house and moves to the town center to meet the folks.

Ladonna Marche (Marche Residence)"Bland, tasteless oatmeal," her mother replies, scooping up a lump and dumping it unceremoniously into Ladonna's bowl. "It's all we can afford nowadays," she adds. Ladonna easily understands the implication. They would have more coin and be able to eat better if Ladonna had agreed to be wed off to some crusty old merchant like her parents had wanted. As it stands now, Jonas just barely makes enough money to keep the four of them fed and clothed. Her mother was still rather bitter that Ladonna had not done what was expected of her. Felicia, on the other hand, is another story. Only sixteen, she's grown into quite the beauty with long blonde hair, blue eyes and fair skin much like her older sister. Sitting down next to her, she cheerfully asks, "Are you looking forward to the Sandon Festival? I've narrowed down my suitors to three, and all of them are coming to visit the village then. I'm hoping I can narrow them down to one then." The Sandon Festival is the summer festival held every year in the village to celebrate the winning of the Battle of Buho and honoring the sacrifice of Sandon Auger, who gave his life to win the battle. The festival is in about two months, toward the end of summer. It's usually celebrated with a big potluck feast, music and dancing, and listening to the veterans of the battle tell tales of the fight. ( Ladonna makes a WIS check with Observation (+1) [TN 15] (1d20): 12, pass. She grasps her mother's implication.) Rivi Wolfright (Lonely Pony Tavern)Rivi works his way back into the village, stepping through the east opening in the hedge wall surrounding Buho. He walks past the Woodcutter and Cobbler, the inn and the stables (the latter which smells pretty bad to his heightened elven senses), the weaver and the barracks, and finally arriving at the doorstep of the Lonely Pony. Run by Rebekah Gibert for the locals, the Lonely Pony is a tidy establishment, containing a bar, stage, some trestle tables set up in the center of the common area, and a dozen booths along the walls. Each booth has an archway for an entry, and curtains can be drawn across these archways for privacy. Not surprisingly, the booths are ideal for the discussion of business. The stage is used on market days by a musicians’ troupe, and is otherwise the home stage of Gerald Chanteur, a minstrel. The bill of fare tends to vary from season to season, although breads, stews, and roast hawk are usually available. Generally, patrons are charged per meal rather than per item, the cost for a typical lunch and supper being three silvers and seven silvers, respectively, not including drinks. Beverages include wine, ale (brewed by Shanson Frye at the Shady Oak), mead, and goat’s milk, for the same prices as the Buho Inn (the two businesses have the same suppliers). Rebekah is there now, tending to the bar. Gerald sits at the bar, speaking with her. Liala, a young elven woman, waits tables. The other waitress, a human woman named Ladonna, is not present. She must be off today, like Rivi is. It's breakfast time, so the delectable smell of bacon and fried eggs fills the room, despite the windows all being open to let in a cool breeze. There are four locals present, all human, of course. Anara Dinan sits alone in the back, eating breakfast. She is one of two druids in the village and is responsible for helping with the crops and keeping the protective hedge wall up. She doesn't socialize much, so Rivi knows little about her. The other three are sitting together, talking and eating. One is Ser Derica Walls, the reeve. She's in charge of the village's defenses and leads the militia. The second one is Lantrin Locke, the town's cooper and wheelwright. The third is Paul Locke, Lantrin's 17 year old son and a member of the militia. Ryan McIntyre (Town Square)Ryan steps outside. The sun is shining above and his herb garden seems to be doing well. He makes his way to the town square. Once a week, on Lightdays, a market is held here where the farmers, local artisans and any visiting merchants may sell or barter for goods and services under the watchful eye of a 15-foot tall statue of Sandon, the Hero of Buho. Today, though, it's fairly empty as it's still rather early in the morning. A handful of people are around, just passing through. They give him respectful nods when they see him, as he is an acolyte of Gonto after all. However, Ryan notes that someone is locked up in the pillory, looking rather pathetic. He recognizes him as Tavos, a half-elven bastard who often gets into trouble.

Ladonna rested her head upon her free hand, and used her other hand to dip her spoon into the slop that was placed in front of her. She slowly lifted the spoon, and watched as the oatmeal dripped back down into the bowl. She cleared her throat a bit, and looked over to her sister with feign interest. "It is still a couple of months away, so I hadn't thought about the festival much. Though, three suitors? Who are they?" she asks her little sister.

Ladonna Marche (Marche Residence)Felicia answers by ticking each one off her fingers. "Well, one is a merchant from the capital city. I'm not sure what exactly he trades, but he apparently has done very well for himself. The second is a craftsman from Tennic. I think he makes metalcrafts or something like that. But he's very prestigious and apparently the nobles always commission his work. The third one is a knight from Vatilay. He's not quite as wealthy as the other two, but he is technically nobility. He just received his title and rank and a bit of land so he's looking to start a family right away. Isn't it exciting? I'll be meeting them all at the festival." Rivi Wolfright (Lonely Pony Tavern)"Bonjour," Gerald replies noncommittally. "Morning, Rivi," Rebekah answers. "What are you doing here? Didn't I give you the day off?" she teases. "You should be out enjoying yourself." Rebekah is the owner and proprietor of the Lonely Pony and Rivi's current employer. The previous owner died in the Battle of Buho, and a few years later she arrived in town and bought the place and fixed it up herself. There are whispers of where she got the gold to do so, but Rivi is one of the few in the village who knows the truth. Rebekah is a former adventurer. She used to travel the country, delving into lost dungeons and killing monsters with magic. When she had her fill, she moved here, bought the tavern and more or less retired. However, she keeps her ability to use magic a secret. But she has been teaching her employees--Rivi, Liala and Ladonna--what she knows. The reason she keeps it secret is the townsfolk would get angry if they knew what she was using it for. A charm spell to encourage a patron to tip better, a sleep spell to put an end to a brawl or a mind-reading spell to learn people's secrets. Despite not being born here, she's managed to get herself a seat on the Village Council as a result of her powers. Only five years older than Rivi, Rebekah is a tall and slender with red hair and green eyes and fair skin. She can be quite strict and even forceful at times. But she's been a good teacher, helping Rivi develop his powers to what they are today, as well as teaching him a few new recipes she learned on her travels.
