"Fine," Zurgrim says. "I'll apologize to you, Damon...not for me, but for Bula's sake. But I will not go with you. Since you insist on this, you're on your own." Turning his back contemptuously, he stomps away back towards his house.

Ryan continues to watch the exchange, bringing back memories of his latest incident with Damon. As it finally ends, he says "Now, that went well." quite sarcastically.
"We have wasted enough time, let's get going."

"Very well," Damon says. "Shall we decide on a marching order? As far as we know, goblins might still be at the farmstead, waiting for us, after all."

Ladonna watches with her mouth dropped open a little bit as the older dwarf marches off. "Uh...okay," she says before she looks back to Damon. "I asked Tavos to join us because I believed he would be good at scouting things out ahead so that we would be prepared for whatever might be waiting for us."

Damon thinks this over. "Hmm...good idea. He can put that elf blood of his to good use. Okay, Tavos takes point. The orc is with me, and you two can watch our backs." He glances back to Ladonna. "You know how to use that thing?" he asks, gesturing to the staff. "And you sure you don't want to put some armor on or something?"

Ryan replies, "I think your stated plan is acceptable to the group, we will proceed that way, let's just get moving." He begins to work inserting group consensus into the plan.
"Let's just be careful and not get to far ahead of ourselves."

"Don't worry about me," Ladonna says with a small smile. "Lead the way."

Damon shrugs. "Your funeral." He gestures for Tavos to take the lead. The five begin heading southeast.
It's a hot and moist day. The sky is overcast, offering some protection from the sun, but it is still quite muggy out. It almost makes one wish it would rain, just to cool things off. Ryan in particular has difficulty keeping up, he's so weighed down by his gear. By the end, he's sweating quite a bit. Plus, neither he or Ladonna is used to such exercise. Fortunately, the Kurtz farm is only about twenty minutes away.
The rising sun hangs lazily behind Hartwood Forest as they arrive. They see a stone-and-sod dwelling, livestock pen, and the charred remains of a barn. Two goats and a cow are still within the livestock pen, a few other domestic animals wander unfettered about the yard, and the cottage door hangs open in the morning air.
"Well, I don't see any goblins, at least," Tavos says hopefully. "Maybe they're all gone now."
"Goblins hate the sun, even with all of this cloud cover," Damon says, shielding his eyes a bit as he takes in the place. "If they are still here, they're probably hiding somewhere dark and cool. So keep your guard up."

Ryan pauses to consume some of the heavy water he carries, passing around the skin. "Tavos, can you read tracks?" he looks over the sight, "It's weird that the livestock is still there and alive, I'm beginning to think trap."

Ladonna looks around quietly, then nods in agreement with what Ryan said. "I'm in agreement with him," she said.

Tavos nods to Ryan. "I have some skill in tracking."
"Alright, good," Damon says. "Maybe we can figure out where the goblins went then. First, we should check out the house and barn, though. There may be clues in either."
=====
Ryan consumes a pint of water.

"Let's check out the house first," Ladonna says. "Then we can go to the barn."

"Agreed, house first, but let's go around and come in from the back, we don't want just walk through the yard." Ryan says.

The party circles the cabin, but there is no back entrance. With no other choice, they return to the front and step inside.
While the barn is badly burned, the cottage seems completely undamaged. The dinner table is still set, as the family had just sat down to dinner when the attack occurred. The pantry door hangs open. Looking inside, it is not empty--rather, it looks like about a third of the foodstuffs within were taken. The rest of the furniture is in place. Nothing else seems to be missing.

"So...they took food?" Ladonna asks. "I would have thought this place would be in shambles."
