So what would you say is your favorite race to play in AD&D games, and why?
For me, it kind of varies from setting to setting. On my home-brewed world of Amtar, I'd have to go with gnomes. I mean, they totally RAWK! They're intelligent, they're creative, and they are rather unique when compared to the other races with their use of tek. However, I don't have any interest in FR or DL gnomes. FR's Rock Gnomes are too boring--basically just jolly dwarves. Feh. And DL's Tinker Gnomes are a 'comedy relief' race.
If I were in an FR game, I'd have to go with halflings. In fact, I rather like halflings on my own world, too (they would be second favorite after gnomes). I'm not sure why...something about their culture fascinates me. They're kind and peaceful, and abhor violence--but are willing to take up arms if they have to. They are hard and diligent works, but don't see a problem with harmless shortcuts that will save time but not hinder quality. Also, despite their diminutive height, they can hold their own against the other, bigger races by outsmarting them.
And if I were in a DL game, I'd have to go with...draconians. Specifically, the Bozak since I like spell-casters. Draconians are just so...unique, I suppose. I've always liked the idea of them and often wished I had thought of something like that myself. In earlier days, they were mostly evil, so not really playable, but with the Fifth Age in full swing, most have shifted to neutrality and occasionally even good.
But probably Amtarian Gnomes above all else.
How about the rest of you?

It's a difficult choice. I seem to like the races that are were intended for monsters: Gnolls, kobolds, lizardmen. A race just clicks with me, or doesn't. Draconians also hold a special place in my heart, thanks to Kang and his troop.

I am hopelessly hung up on the pointy-eared arrogant sons of biznatches that are elves. And not just because of the pretty, but because they're a challenge. But playing them properly is a pain, so I usually stick with regular 'ol humans when I am somewhere new because it's difficult to NOT play them correctly. Yay humans! Short-lived, versatile, and tempermental.

I'm more of a half-elf person myself. Yes, part of it has to deal with the fact that they are pretty, but I like the idea of them not really being accepted by the human race, and pretty much hated by the elven race. I like that kind of conflict, where they aren't excepted by either race and perhaps they feel the need to prove themselves. Sometimes that just isn't the case, they could be rather apathetic to what the other races think, but hey, either way, there is a some kind of conflict.

Keith: You're in luck then. Each one of the Five Kingdoms has at least one race that fits those requirements.
Cryzza - Bugbears Gontoria - Gnolls Rabbah - Kobolds Renosia - Hobgoblins, Goblins Octhania - Uh....um...
Okay, well, all except that one. ^_^() But, this also goes for the other worlds in Soulspace, too.
Meg: I'd agree with you, elves are perhaps the worst played race I've ever seen, often treated as short, good-looking humans with pointy ears.
Of course, the only elves really found in Renosia are the Drow. None have really been introduced yet, since the bulk of them are found in the Legar sector. I wonder what will happen once that race gets unlocked?
Heather: Originally, half-elves were my favorite, as well. That was why I made Daos one, because I wanted him to have to struggle with the fact that he is not accepted by either of his parents' races. Some people think that half-elves are a mixture of elf and human, but I've always viewed them as neither elven nor human. They are outcasts, not fitting into either society fully.

In every single RPG I've ever played, I've always been a human. I don't know what the driving force is, or why I follow it, but I do. Maybe it's because humans are so diverse that it doesn't feel as limiting to be one. Not only that, but I like to think that it's a race I know intimately. I don't know. I'm thinking while sidetracked.

Now for a twist...
What race do you dislike the most?
For Amtar, I guess I would say bugbears. I guess they just don't appeal to me as much as some of the other races. But then, they aren't fully fleshed out yet, either.
For FR, I would say half-orcs. They just strike me as being really illogical. How many possible human/orc unions can there be to create enough of these things to constitute as a playable race?
For DL, I would definetely go with Kender. Sure, they're fun to read about. But I would never want one in any party I was in (or was DMing, for that matter). I mean, let's think about this: Here we have a race that 1) blindly rushes into any situation, no matter the danger involved, without fear 2) has no sense of property and steals anything they get their hands on and 3) is well-known for taunting things much bigger and stronger than they are. Would you really want something like that in your party?

Before I respond I have some breaking Keith-world news: (Not word for word) "I never married" "The chain of command is where I take a chain and beat you with it until you follow my command." "Here's something you can't do." "Reputations are just rumors, gossip."
And as for hating a race? Hobgoblins, I just don't like hobgoblins that much. Also, Halflings. I don't really dislike any race, but these two are last one my favorites.

No reasons why?
And the actual quote is: "Do you know what the chain of command is? It's the rutting chain I beat you with until you follow my command!"

That's the one. I'm typing from a laptop right now, having just finished the first disc of Firefly. I can't do it justice from here, as I have no time to collect my thoughts. Going to see Narnia in like 10 mins.
Same reason why no reasons.

Half-orcs aren't even a core race in 2E. So does that mean you've had experience in 1E or in 3E?

Well, yes I have had experience with 1E... never played 3E.
However, half-orcs have been included in many 2E products. FR started me out on them, but I moved on to half-orc characters in Spelljammer and Ravenloft campaigns at one point in time. Odd, but still within the realm of possiblity.

Spelljammer has something even better than half-orcs. Remember the Scro?
