"It seems to have settled to the ground now, whatever that was," Ladonna says to Ryan over her shoulder before she looks to Theron and Jherek. "Are you two okay?" "I...think I'm alright," Theron says. "You good, Jherek?" "...What happened?" Ladonna asks. She still avoids the cloud that Jherek suffered through. "That was...something like a defense mechanism the fungus uses, I guess?" His reply had started out as more of a statement, but ended as a question. "I've seen the mold that grows on old, dusty books, and the mold that the Farbough's use in some of their fancy cheese, but this kind of mold is completely new to me." "I think we should probably keep our distance from that stuff, whatever it is," Finbul states. Theron snorts. "Thanks a lot, pal. That would've been real helpful, if you'd said it about a minute earlier." "Is that just the mine cart, then?" [Katya] asks of the oblong object at the end of the tracks. "I...don't know," Theron says. "That's what originally caught my attention, before the mold attacked us, but it's looking like we'll never find out now. That mold has claimed it for its own."

Jherek coughs again, covering his face as he struggles to clean himself off. His voice is hoarse and small, weak, barely audible. “I...I...my...chest...” Another cough wracks his burly frame and he tries to blink spores from his eyes.
“There...Is...I...I want to know...what...the...can we kill it.” He looks to the mold...cursing it. “We need to get rid of...rid of that thing.” He coughs again then turns to his companions. “Do you know how to kill that thing Druid?” There is a familiar fire burning in his eyes.

From what Katya can tell, the fungus may likely burst again if disturbed. Digging out the object covered in it will almost certainly trigger another cloud or two.
"Guess I should have known better than to think that it was just common sense to not go poking stuff you know nothing about," Finbul retorts.
"Kill it?" Finbul seems taken aback by the idea. "I don't know. It's a mold of some kind. Not any kind I've seen before. Maybe it's subterranean. Only grows underground, where it's dark and cool. I'm not sure how you'd kill it, without causing more spores clouds to form, anyway. You're lucky you didn't breathe in more of them, or you'd probably be dead right now. If enough of them had made it into your lungs, they'd probably grow and expand, and eventually consume your whole body. We'd be better off just leaving it be. It's not hurting anyone, except those that get too close, anyways."

"I agree that we should probably just leave it alone," Ladonna says, backing up Finbul in this case. "We probably shouldn't dally around either as we have a long way to go before we find the Hooded One. We must keep in mind that he or she is our main goal here."

Theronymous digs out his waterskin and offers it to his coughing friend. "Easy, there. As much as I hate to admit it, Finbul's right. Gotta know when to fold 'em, right, brother?"
"And Miss Marche is right, too," he continues. "This is clearly a dead end, and there are many places left to search where our quarry could possibly be. Let's circle back to that other branch we saw, near where we entered this floor. If that one dead-ends too, we'll go down to the next level."

"Are you two okay enough to remain in the lead?" Ladonna asks Theron, though she is mostly speaking to Jherek since he seems to be the one that was mostly affected by the fungus.

Upon hearing Ladonna's question, Theron turns to Jherek. "It's no problem if you need to take a breather. You and Katya can guard our rear, I'll keep looking out ahead, and Ingot and Finbul will be right behind me at the first sign of danger."
"In any case," he continues, "it gets real hard to keep track of time down here, but I feel like we've wasted too much of it on this dead end. Onward, to the other branch!" With that, he begins leading the party back to the main "trunk" their current path diverged from, then down the unexplored passage.

"I would say...we have been down here...a little over...an hour," Ingot states. With Theron now in the lead, the party backtracks to the main tunnel, then continues eastward until they reach the next branch. From here, they can see that the eastward tunnel continues a bit more before branching northeast and southeast. The south branch also branches off itself, with one tunnel continuing south, and another going southwest and southeast. ===============

"Yes, let's circle back around, finish this little side excursion." Ryan adds.

"Just how big is this place?" Ladonna asks.

"Big enough to worry about getting lost" Katya remarks to Ladonna.
"and the branches are all indistinguishable to us, so we should do this systematically. We started out going to the left, let's keep doing that - explore the left branch first, and follow the wall."

Jherek has been holding his tongue, saving his breath and energy. He had grumbled agreement and moved with the party away from the mold covered tunnel, drifting back to the rear of the column to stand beside Kat. He felt stronger beside her, more secure. His pride had been wounded when the others had thought him a bit weak after his exposure to the spore cloud, he's stayed quiet, not quite sulking, but not really giving everything his full attention. He was determined to do something to make the others see him as strong again. As the others talk and the conversation moves to further exploration He nods in agreement. "Lets make sure we do this right, I agree with Katya's idea. Don't want to get turned around or lost down here."

“That sounds reasonable to me,” Lillian says. “With both Jherek and Katya weakened-no offense to either of you-we should make our best effort to avoid being separated.”

The party moves past the south branch, Jherek falling back to the rear with Katya. Peering down the two tunnels at the end, it looks like the southeast one extends pretty far before opening up into a room. The northeast one extends less so, and then turns eastward.

"Left-most path first..." Theron parrots Katya. "Elegant -- I like it."
After they pass the tunnel to the south and come to the fork splitting off northeast and southeast, he whispers, "I'll just peek around the corner real quick, then motion for you all to follow if the coast is clear. As Lillian pointed out, two of our strongest members are injured, and there's no telling how many more goblins we'll have to deal with before we find the Hooded One and make our escape. Can't afford any more surprises."
With that, he quietly scampers just far enough ahead to peer down the passage leading to the east. He takes the time to check for any signs of traps, then -- assuming no imminent source of danger is obvious -- motions for the party to follow.
