Malavar nods in acknowledgement. "Much better, Master Peddywinkle. It's good to be back in what passes for civilization in these parts."

Peddywinkle gathers the group together (sans Rafferty and Dell who have already retired for the night) to one table, and leans forward to speak to them confidentially. He looks around to make sure nobody is trying to listen in on them.
"I tell you this in confidence and in the hope you'll help me with something: a mission I have for you. You see, a great mage's tower once stood on the far shore of the lake you saw earlier. It later sunk or collapsed. I have studied this area and I am sure that I know where the castle fell. I hope you'll help me find this place. If you do, I will reward you greatly. Perhaps an even split? Fifty percent for me and fifty percent for your group!
"Many years ago, when these lands were still untamed, a wizard of great renown came to Icewind Dale to make it his home. He brought with him only his craft and his wife. His name was Damien Morienus; perhaps you have heard of him? No? Ah well, it is of no matter for if we are successful here, the entire world will soon know his great name.
"Damien was a conjuror of goodly conscience and he wanted to leave something behind for the world that had treated him so well. So he created a great tower here, far from the distractions of civilization, and set himself to his studies. He hoped to learn the secrets of the healing arts, spending his years searching out plants and magic which, when combined, would create a salve that heals any wound and cures any disease. It was his desire to make this salve known to all, so that the world would be free of sickness.
"But a tragedy of monumental proportions befell this great mage...a great thaw came to the Dale, the ground beneath his home subsided, and his tower fell into the lake. Damien was never heard from again, and I believe that he died in the tower that fateful day, and with him went his salves formula.
"For five years now I have made it my quest to find the tower and recover his formula. That is my true reason for coming here and that is why I have brought you with me, to help me find the tower of Damien Morienus.
"Everything that I know about Damien started with a piece of paper that I found many years ago. It seemed to be a page from a diary; it talked about missing one piece of a puzzle. I later found out that it was a page from Damien's own diary. The page piqued my curiosity so that I went on a quest to find out everything that I could about this mysterious mage. Did you know that he was a member of the Hosttower in Luskan? Yes, he was indeed. It was there that the gracious mages allowed me to study this great man.
"So it comes down to this, will you join me in my quest? Will you help me to find this tower? If you will, I charge you with finding his personal diary; all his notes on his salve would be there."

Drezden looks a little miffed "But you said his tower fell into the lake I can't breathe water I'm no water genasi. How would a diary be intact under a lake? Wouldn't it be destroyed by the water?" he changes his look to more quizzical when asking the questions.

Malavar chuckles at Drezden's questions. "You raise a good point about the location of the tower, friend Drezden, but I have the feeling that Master Peddywinkle is aware of our deficiencies when it comes to breathing under water. I expect that he has considered how we might proceed despite that. Isn't that so, Master Peddywinkle?"

Peddywinkle shakes his head. "There is no need to breathe water, as there is no water to worry about. We are in Icewind Dale, remember? Everything would be frozen over."

Jaxle looks confused and questions Peddywinkle. So the lake is frozen solid? Would we not have melt the lake in spots to enter the old tower.

Peddywinkle frowns in thought. "I do not have an answer for you, as I have not seen the tower ruins myself. I take it then, you are not interested in the job?"

Dallion sat there listening to the others lost in thought about the tower, there could be spellbooks there he could use and maybe the Elven people could use as well. "I am interested in this tower, what secrets it could hold."

"Yes, yes, precisely," Peddywinkle agrees. "Even ignoring that his diary could well change the world itself, there is no doubt countless other treasures within his tower, lost to time but worth hundreds if not thousands of gold pieces. And with the exception of the diary and anything else relating to the salve, we split it all 50/50 down the middle."

Dallion looks at his employer and then the others "I would like to claim any arcane spell books we find, i am not sure they will do any of you any good. "

"Don't concern yourself overmuch with our questioning, Master Peddywinkle. I'm sure you'll agree that only a foolish man would embark on a campaign without first gathering what intelligence he can. After all, I doubt you decide on a commercial venture without first learning all you can about the ratio of risk to profit?"
"Be that as it may, now that we are here and seeing as there's no rush to get back to civilization, I have nothing but time on my hands. If Dallion is going, I may as well go too. The division of the spoils seems somewhat slanted in your favour, though. If we succeed, you shall have the diary and the potential to make yourself wealthy beyond any sane man's wildest dreams. Meanwhile, we shall be taking all the actual risk. I would suggest that a split of 75/25 would be fairer."

Peddywinkle sputters, "S-Seventy-five/twenty five!" His eyes dart back and forth in calculation, then he counteroffers, "How about 60/40?"

Malavar smiles wolfishly. "A smallish raise on your part, a significant drop in price on mine. How about 65/35 and we get first pick on any magic items or spell books recovered. Anything we cannot or will not use is yours. Depending on what's there, that may be a great many things, Master Peddywinkle."
