"He said he wanted to retire, to settle down and raise a family," Katya explains. "That's why I ended things with him. But now he's leading the Wyld Boys instead? Something must have happened. Besides, if he's a threat to the baron's daughter, all the more reason I confront him."

Ladonna looks to Lillian and the others to see if they have anything to say before Katya runs off. "And after you confront him? Then what?"

“I understand,” Lillian tells Katya. “If that’s where you feel you need to go, you should go.” Nevermind that Liala won’t have to worry about her betraying them anymore.

"Once the Wyld Boys are taken care of, and Lady Escott is no longer in danger, I will return...maybe," Katya answers. "Depends on how things go down. In the meantime, the rest of you can protect her until then." And with that, she starts walking back toward Buho on her own.
"Good riddance," Liala mutters under her breath.

Ladonna liked the idea of having Katya close by because that meant that everyone could keep an eye on her. There was a chance that she could easily join the Wyld Boys, but it seems that people were okay with this as well. She watches Katya walk off for a little bit before she turns back to the rest of the group. "I think we were all setting up camp for the night," she says. "So, let's continue with that."

"Sounds good to me," Lillian agrees. "Do you think we should forage for firewood?"

Helen frowns as Katya walks off. "I don't really understand what is going on, but I'm sorry to see her leave. She almost looked like an Escott herself; having her around made me feel like I had a sister all of the sudden."
While Jonas sits and rests, Liala tends to the horses and Finbul and Ingot go out into the nearby woods to search for firewood and kindling. Although it is nearly spring, the nights still get pretty cold these days, so they'll need a large fire to keep everyone warm.

"Well, her mother is or was a knight," Ladonna says to Helen. "But this is something that she feels she needs to do."

"And you are a knight now, too," Helen reminds her. "Does it feel very different now, from being a commoner?"

"And you are a knight now, too," Helen reminds her. "Does it feel very different now, from being a commoner?" “Who we are comes from our upbringing, memories, and relationships, not from our status,” Lillian huffs.

"I agree with Lillian. Having a title doesn't feel any different than not having one," Ladonna admits. "I assume that people will start treating me a little differently, but I have yet to see that happen."

"But how would you know that?" Helen asks. "Have you not always been a commoner, as I have always been a noble?"
"Just wait until we reach Hart, and see how people treat you," Helen says. "This will be a new experience for me, too. I've always been the baron's daughter. My father is the highest authority in the barony, but now we're going to meet the count and his family, nobles that outrank us. I've never had to defer to another before...do you think the count is a good man? And that his son is, as well?"

“That comes with the ‘upbringing’ part,” Lillian sighs in elaboration. “Your attitude comes from the fact that you were raised in a privileged lifestyle, not the simple fact that you are the daughter of a baron. I daresay that if by some twist of fate, you grew up in a ‘common’ family, you would be a very different person, title nonwithstanding.”

"I'm not really sure," Ladonna says in answer to Helen's question. "I certainly haven't heard anything about the count or his son, but considering how loved you are by your father, I don't think he would have you marry someone that wasn't at least decent."

"My life is not as privileged as you seem to think," Helen says to Lillian. "This is my first time ever outside the manor, never mind the barony itself. And it's to eventually marry a man I've never met and had no say on any of it."
To Ladonna, she adds, "I get the feeling my father did not have any choice in the matter. The count insisted, and my father swore an oath to serve him as his vassal. The same oath I will swear when I become baroness."
