Helen just nods silently, gets to her feet, and returns to the carriage. She climbs inside and closes the door.
"Is it okay...to talk to her like that?" Liala asks. "I mean, she is still a noble...and will someday be baroness of our home."
Finbul uses a stick to poke at the fire. "Kind of surprised she lets you get away with it."
"I do not...believe she is...sure how to...even respond to...it yet," Ingot notes.
Jonas pulls out a flask and takes a long swig, but adds nothing to the conversation.

"It probably isn't wise to speak to her in such a way," Ladonna says to the others. "It won't be stood for in Hart, so we need to be more respectful." While saying this, she walks over to her father as he drinks from his flask. "I thought going to Hart was going to be a fresh start?" she asks, as she looks down at the flask.

Lillian lays down to rest until her first watch, letting Ladonna talk with her father.

"That was before I knew my only daughter was a secret witch," Jonas replies. "I need a drink after learning that little revelation."

"So anytime something unexpected happens, is this what you are going to do?" Ladonna asks curiously.

Jonas looks a little horrified at the question. "You mean there's more you haven't told me yet?" he asks.

"No," Ladonna says with a shake of her head. "I'm talking about in Hart. You are going to look for work, to get back on your feet, to sober up. That is going to be hard work, and you are going to fail a lot in the beginning. Every time you fail, am I going to have to come pick you up in some tavern, like I use to do in Buho? This is a chance to fix our broken family, and right now you aren't off to the best start."

"It's one drink, and I almost died and learned my daughter is a witch," Jonas argues. "And don't speak to me like a child here. You may be a knight now, but I'm still your father."

"And yet I've been the parent for awhile now," Ladonna says firmly. "Get some sleep," she tells her father before she goes to take the first watch.

Wordlessly, Jonas gets up and walks off toward the edge of camp.
"If you really want to help him change, is treating him like that the best way to go?" Liala asks her, watching him walk off.

"Just letting it happen isn't going to help either, though," Ladonna says.

"But aren't there choices beyond letting it happen and treating him like that? If you push him away, he might get worse," Liala says. Then, leaning in to speak quieter so Finbul doesn't overhear, she adds, "And isn't it kind of your fault that he's like that to begin with? He was sober and employed in the old timeline..."

"I did change the timeline with giving advice," Ladonna says softly. "But the decisions that they made were still all up to them," she points out. "There is no way I could have known that my father would have ended up being a drunk," she explains.

"Still, this never would have happened otherwise," Liala points out. "Doesn't that mean you have some responsibility in fixing it?"

Ladonna looks off towards where her father walked off, then back to Liala. "It is a work in progress. Mistakes are going to be made. I know that the man I knew is inside this one. I just don't know how to bring him out."
