Nice! It's hard to believe it's been that long. I was around when this game started...my character wasn't very good, but I was in it!

Yeah. Although, considering the last time we saw Grognak, he was joining Gerrard's expedition...his fate probably didn't turn out to be a happy one. Ah, well.
Anyway, the whole 'swearing fealty' thing is in regards to joining a faction. Way back when the game started, I set up a faction system. The idea is that over time, the party could gain favor (or lose favor) with the various factions as they performed quests for them. If you gain enough favor, you get perks, like a base of operations, access to equipment and manpower, new henchmen, etc.
Ultimately, this didn't really go anywhere. The party just kind of bounced around from town to town, more interested in personal quests than working for any of the factions. It also didn't help that I charted faction progress individually; and we've had massive turnover in this game (the last PC to join, Regar, was the 14th PC to join the party in only three years--I'm not counting Zero's character or Justin's character, since neither of them actually finished them, otherwise it would be the 16th; Ravarie is the only PC left from the original group now). This meant whenever there was progress, it was often lost later on.
So I've decided it would be better if the entire party joins one of the factions together, but it doesn't have to be the knights. (They can also choose not to join a faction, and remain purely neutral, but that means they'll be unable to access any perks; they'll retain full autonomy, though.)
The factions are:
* The Ogres (headquartered in Daltigoth) * The Knights of Solamnia (headquartered in Eastwatch) * The Silvanesti (headquartered in Silvamori) * The Qualinesti (headquartered in Qualimori) * The Youngbloods (headquartered in Qualimori) * The Kagonesti (headquartered in Harkun) * The South Ergothians (headquartered in Zhea Harbor) * The North Ergothians (headquartered in Zhea Harbor) * The Sea Nomads (headquartered in Cristyne, Enstar and Nostar) * The Goblin Tribes (headquartered in the Wastes)
Each faction has its own agenda, needs and wants, and can offer its own resources, henchmen and quests. Many of the factions are directly opposed to one another, so by joining one, you may make enemies of another. If you forge an alliance between multiple factions, then whichever faction you join will be the leader of that alliance.
Let me know if there are any questions.

Just if there's any longstanding grudges between the Knights and any of the other mentioned factions--well, excepting the Ogres, who really don't look like allies right now.

I kind of doubt the Goblins are an ally no offense Grubnick you are the exception to that statement. The different factions of elves I don't think are exactly allies either, though maybe one might be more willing to help more than one of the others.
I'm unsure about the Sea Nomads.
We know the Ogre's are not likely allies.
So that leaves maybe North or South Ergothians, maybe one of the three factions of elves. Maybe the Youngbloods?? Not entirely sure who they are without looking them up.

Just if there's any longstanding grudges between the Knights and any of the other mentioned factions--well, excepting the Ogres, who really don't look like allies right now. Although the war was ten years ago, I'd say there's still quite a bit of bad blood between the knights and the ogres and goblins. But they're on pretty good/decent terms with the Ergothians and the Qualinesti. The Silvanesti still treat the knights with disdain (for being human) and the Kagonesti weren't involved in the war and want nothing to do with humans, either. Maybe the Youngbloods?? Not entirely sure who they are without looking them up. The Youngbloods are a sort of sub-faction within the Qualinesti. They're young, brash and hate the Silvanesti. They often sneak into Silvamori and free Kagonesti slaves. I believe this is how Ravarie escaped from the Silvanesti. The Youngbloods also want Gilthanas (the Speaker of the Sun's second son) to succeed the throne instead of his older brother, Porthios. Daos, can you tell us a little more about the 2 ergothians? The Ergothian Empire was the first human nation, and was once the most powerful. But after the Solamnics rebelled and the Cataclysm smashed the empire into two (literally), it's now a shadow of its past glory. The North is basically the last remnant of the empire. The emperor runs it, and it's where the famous Ergothian Cavaliers can be found. The South, on the other hand, is really not part of the empire anymore. The elves rule the south, and the ogres rule the center, leaving only the northern most part in the hands of humans. During the war, the North Ergothians were more or less driven out entirely. They've returned now, but really only have a token presence in Zhea Harbor. As far as the two factions go, they're basically split between loyalists who want to remain part of the empire and secessionists who want to become independent. So the North Ergothian faction are the loyalists and the South Ergothain faction are the independents.

We would likely find willing allies among the Southern Ergothians if we are seeking to free Daltigoth from ogre control.

Seems like the yougbloods agree with Ravarie's morals, but maybe not methods.
The southern ergotgians do seem to have more in line with wanting the ogres gone and more likely cooperating with the group at large. Though their resources sound limited

I think, considering the goal right now is to deal with the ogres, is to make the alliance with the Southern Ergothians. I was kind of hoping to combine two of the factions (the Knights and the Southern Ergothians), but I'm not sure that is possible.

It is possible, sure. Had you joined the knights, they would have eventually sent you to Zhea Harbor anyway as their emissary to forge an alliance.

How hard would it be to find allies in Northern Ergoth? Do they not wish to see Southern Ergoth free of the ogres? I'd almost think they'd like to see all of Ergoth back under the rule of the emperor.
