"Teakettle, how about letting the sligs know what you think of their mothers?" Dorias suggests, then draws his sword and brings his shield up, ready to strike down the first slig that comes close. Initiative 6tGeQRoj1d10 If we're going by RAW, then not really. The combat sequence is that the DM decides what the NPCs intend to do, the players then state what they want to do, and then we roll initiative to see who gets to act first. So stating that you draw your axe and want to attack the first available target is fine, but whether or not you'll be able to do so before that same target can attack someone is dependent on your initiative count. The Complete Fighter's Handbook introduces the option of holding your attack, but that shifts you to last in the initiative order rather than letting you interrupt an opponent's action. 1d10

"Teakettle, how about letting the sligs know what you think of their mothers?" "Oh! Right!" "The only thing worse than your posture is your halitosis!" Teakettle taunts the sligs. She ducks back between Dorias and Runt.

“What ‘hal-i-toe-sis, small one?” Grognak asks Teakettle. “Nasty-growth on feet?”

Much like Grognak, the sligs seem a bit confused as to what exactly halitosis is...although they do seem to understand, at least, that it is not complementary. Four of them charge forward, heedless of danger, while the other three seem to ignore the taunt and instead approach cautiously and with their defenses up.
Of the four that charge forward, the first one (#6) doesn't quite make it to the kender, so instead stabs at Dorias. The gallant, however, easily blocks the stab with his shield. Deciding to retaliate, he swings his blade at her, but in her rage she is moving about so wildly that she manages to knock the sword from his hand with her tail. A rumble of laughter comes from the audience, although there is at least one woman in the stands--Dorias can easily guess who without taking the time to look--is shouting in outrage and calling a foul. The slig's victory is short-lived, though. The not so aptly named Runt takes aim and fires an arrow right into her tail, causing her to roar in further pain and outrage.
The second charging slig (#7) doesn't quite make it far enough to attack and is too outraged to remember he can spit acid, so simply pauses to catch his breath a bit. The third charging slig (#1) actually manages to break through the party's defenses while they are distracted and take a stab at Teakettle. Fortunately, the kender nimbly dances aside. Grognak hurls his hand axe at the aggressor, cutting into him. Runt then shoots him in the right leg, wounding him further. Finally, the fourth charging slig (#4) doesn't make it to Teakettle, but does stab at Dorias; but like before, the spearhead is deflected by the cavalier's tower shield.
This whole time, Ravarie has been deep in prayer to the Blue Phoenix. Finally finishing, a glowing warmth fills the party's chests, letting them know that the Blue Phoenix is with them in this fight and giving them the strength to fight harder than before.

Teakettle has the pure nerve to laugh at her opponents. She dances back and to her right, as light and nimble on her toes as a ballerina, in a trajectory calculated to make any sligs trying to follow her expose their backs to Dorias and Grognak. "Come on, come on" she 'encourages' the sligs. "I thought you were supposed to be good at this!" (ooc: Two hexes South-West of Grognak's current position, please and thank you )

"Dammit!" Dorias curses beneath his breath. "So much for a shield wall..." Ducking beneath the blows of his enemies, he just manages to retrieve his sword and then uses his shield to ward off any attacks. "Grognak! Close the gap, protect Ravarie!" he calls out.

Runt growls in frustration as the Gallant loses his sword mid-swing.
"Protect taunt-kettle and the sharp-ear."He snaps at Grognak, pivoting on one foot as he drops his bow and turns to strike on the two Sligs foolish enough to step before him. Despite the sharp tone of his voice his eyes are a bright blood-red with the exhilaration of combat joined, and his club whips free of its simple leather loop at his belt. The motion is well-practiced and vicious as he brings the club down on the nearest Slig, followed by sharp swipes with his bare claws a moment later. Despite the power behind the swings, the old Baaz remembers to aim away from the Slig's heads so as not to kill them outright.
[OOC: I'm not sure if this is a thing I can do in 2e, but can I switch targets if I down one with attacks?? If so gonna aim for Slig 1, then Slig 6. Oof, 2 fumbles for the party already]

Grognak growls at the Slig who attacked Teakettle and rushes toward him, spear in one hand, club in the other. He intends to pierce him through his chest (the side without the heart), stick him to the ground, and knock him out with a clubbing to the head.

Even with Habbakuk's blessing, things are not going well for the party. Grognak engages with one of the enraged sligs, and gets his spear knocked out of his hand (sparking further laughter from the audience). He does make contact with his club, though and this seems to snap the slig out of his rage. Realizing he is now in a pretty bad position (he cannot attack anyone without exposing his back to someone else), he evades Runt's attacks and then decides to withdraw a bit away from everyone.
Meanwhile, Teakettle, laughing the whole thing off, withdraws in the opposite direction, careful not to expose her back to anyone. However, this allows one of the calmer sligs to approach and stab her in the shoulder (although luckily her armor absorbs the worst of it, so it's just a scratch and fails to go very deep) and two of the enraged ones ignore the others to come at her, but she easily avoids those attacks as they can barely see straight in their fury. The crowd cheers the sligs on, but those cheers turn to boos when they fail to take her down.
The other enraged slig cannot reach the kender, so instead tries to stab at Dorias. But the gallant manages to not only fend off the attack, but pick his sword back up in the process. He can hear Dhall'a cheering for him, raising her voice over everyone else's.
Two more of the calmer sligs come up to Runt, but keep a safe distance of at least 10 feet. They spit at him. The first misses entirely, but the second lob splatters on his neck and begins to sizzle lightly. His tough hide keeps him from hurting too much, and luckily it missed his face, particularly his eyes, altogether.
Finally, Ravarie--although left completely exposed, otherwise ignored for now--finishes her second prayer. A loud buzzing fills the arena, drowning out both cheers and boos alike, as a large swarm of flying insects--mostly bees, hornets and the like--begin to coalesce overhead. Once a sufficient sized swarm has formed, the Kagonesti directs them toward the slig that hurt Teakettle.
