Ladonna "All of us, really," Eowin admits. "Poor Joy has it even worse than I, if I'm honest. It makes me glad I'm not the heir, really. Not that I can really blame father too much. Things are quite dangerous out there, now that the Tardish Knights have been recalled. Every day I hear more news about Equalists, Wyld Boys, or whatever."

"Hmm, but it kind of sounds like he has always been this way?" Ladonna asks.

Lillian sighs at his remark. "It is of my opinion that nothing good can come out of war. Certainly, you'd get to see the world, but it is really worth the cost of countless people's lives, livelihoods, and families?"

Ladonna "Well, the knights were recalled years ago; I was just a kid then," Eowin explains. "So naturally he didn't let me have free reign back then. I expected him to loosen up once I became a man, but he worries about how dangerous things are out there without the knights' protection."
Lillian "But isn't it okay as long as the people dying are the bad guys?" the young man asks. "Like killing goblins or orcs. That's what us adventurers do."

"From what I know of your father, he was an adventurer at one point and time," Ladonna says. "So he knows of the dangers all too well, but all of you have been trained how to fight, correct?" she asks curiously.

Lillian"But isn't it okay as long as the people dying are the bad guys?" the young man asks. "Like killing goblins or orcs. That's what us adventurers do." Lillian tries to keep herself from laughing at his naivety. "Imagine, if you will, that one country attacks another. Why would they do that? Do they think the other country has harmed them in some way? True, they are not wrong to be angry, but to start a war, causing hundreds, even thousands of innocents to be caught in the crossfire? Or, perhaps it is for petty, selfish reasons, like a lust for more power on the ruler's part. Their leadership may be villainous, but do you really believe each and every soldier will fight and die just to make the king feel better about himself. Some may fight for patriotism. Some may fight because they believe the ruler's lies that the other country is at fault. Some may be forced to. The point is, there are very close to never 'bad guys,' in a war, and rarely are there 'good guys,' as well," she concludes. "War is not as simple as heading off to defeat some orcs who have been harassing a village, or rescuing a maiden from her draconic captor. It is not wrong to wish it so, but taking it as truth it is the most grievous error one can make." Lillian places some coins on the counter and mentions, "I should like a drink."

Ladonna "All of us have had some training, except for the youngest among us," Eowin answers. "I can defeat any of the guards in the garrison easily in a sparring match. But I've never been in a real fight before," he adds, disappointment evident in his voice.
Lillian "I guess I never thought of it like that," the adventurer admits.
The bartender accepts a couple of silvers from Lillian and brings her a pint of ale in return.

"It's all right," Lillian says, sipping her ale. "Most people don't, unfortunately."

Ladonna smiles slightly at the look on his face. "A real fight is much different from training. I can promise you that. Being able to think quickly on your feet, especially for a warrior is a must."

Ladonna "Exactly! You get it," Eowin says. "I only wish my father understood that. All my training means nothing without actual field experience. But I can never earn that experience if he won't let me leave the castle grounds."
Lillian "But now that I think about it now, it doesn't really change anything, does it?" he asks. "If a war breaks out, we're all getting caught up in it anyway. There's nothing any of us can do to stop it," the young man says.

"Well, I can understand wanting to protect his children," Ladonna says. "But it is possible that something might happened in which I can take you out to get the experience you desire."

Lillian sighs. "True, true...we are often beholden to the will of those in power...still, I hate it when people treat war as a sort of 'game,' with little value for the lives they are taking."

Ladonna Eowin chuckles at that. "Well, I'm quite skeptical you could ever talk my father into that...but if by some miracle of Gonto you could, I would be infinitely grateful, to be sure."
Lillian "You sound as if you speak from experience," the young man observes. "Have you been in many wars?"

"I can be very convincing when I want to be, and one never knows when I might need a handsome young diplomat at my disposal," Ladonna says jokingly. "But I am sure I have wasted enough of your time," she says as she stands. She bows and says her goodbyes before she leaves to seek out the countess.

“Thankfully, no, but I moved around quite a bit in my childhood, and...well, you hear stories. For a while I lived with an old blind minstrel. When I once asked how he lost his sight, he just said it was ‘in the War,’ and refused to discuss it further.
