CH. 05 - Cragmaw Castle

[Daos]

This high, narrow hall looks as if it might have been part of a chapel or shrine at one time. Angelic figures are sculpted along the room's upper reaches, looking down on the floor below. To the north, heavy curtains block a matching pair of archways, and to the west is another door. Between the archways is a cracked but ornately carved stone brazier.  As there are no windows in this area, it is completely dark.

Orianna takes a moment to let her eyes adjust, and then heads towards the curtains towards the north while keeping her eyes open for traps.

Balasar remains vigilant bow and arrow in a hand ready to fire if a foe shows up.

"Hold a moment," Iroas says, looking at the statues.  He gestures for Fosco to bring the torch closer.  He points at each statue, one by one.  "Oghma, god of knowledge.  Mystra, goddess of magic.  Lathander, god of the dawn.  Tymora, goddess of luck."

"It's becoming increasingly clear that it was not goblins who built this place," Zoya notes.

As the party discusses this, they never notice that something is slithering around from above.  Not until it drops down in front of Orianna.  At first, it resembles some kind of giant worm.  But then its front part opens up, revealing four tentacles and a bird-like beak.  It lashes its tentacles at her wildly, and she's able to avoid being grappled by them by dodging at the last second.

"What the hell is that?" Orianna screams as she quickly pulls out her bow and moves away from the creature. She attacks once she feels she is far enough.

Before anyone can react, the creature attacks again.  This time its tentacles do manage to strike Orianna, and grasp on to her, holding her in place.  The creature then attempts to bite her with its beak, but she's able to break free in time to avoid it.  The tiefling then backs away from the creature and puts an arrow into it.

Balasar fires his own arrow, but it flies too wide and misses.  Fosco, Iroas and Zoya all rush at the creature.  Fosco and Zoya manage to strike it, but Iroas misses.

The creature turns its attention toward Zoya, but she is able to ward off its attacks with her shield.  Orianna and Balasar both fire at the creature, and both miss.  Fosco finds his rapier likewise unable to penetrate the creature's hide.  However, Iroas manages to smack it pretty good with his mace, and this leaves it open for Zoya to finish it off with her blade, severing its head off.
