I haven't been playing very many games lately. Here's what I remember from a month ago.
The story starts okay, but then it kind of plateaus when you get to Vaan's part (so, pretty much near the beginning). It pretty much starts like a MMORPG, actually... Not that I've played one, but it feels like one. The first "quest" is that you have to retrieve an item from the desert just outside the town you start in. Actually, was it an item or a person? I can't remember... But the major town is pretty vibrant, with lots of people to talk to.
The battle system... is turn-based. But you can move around freely. Which really bugs me. Because if you have free movement, what's the point of having a turn-based combat system? Just stick with one or the other, don't try to mesh them together. Still, the battle system is ridiculously easy to learn.
I had some other thoughts, but I can't remember enough of the game. Actually, I have been getting back into some old NES games. I've been playing Little Nemo, Flying Warriors, etc.
Anyway, I don't think I gave FFXII a good enough chance, and I do plan on trying to get back into it.

I've heard that it's like playing a one-player MMORPG, but that only worries me.
At first, I figured the only reason I didn't like MMORPGs is because they are filled with PKers, gankers, scammers, and just assholes in general. But then I realized there are other reasons, too: Progress. In an MMORPG, it's not uncommon to log on for 10 hours doing nothing but skill building or level grinding. Boring.
FF12 isn't like that, is it? You don't have to spend hours killing bunnies so you can one day move up to cats, do you?
HOW I MINE 4 FISH?!

No, not at all. There are some cool looking monsters in the first level, though admittedly, you start by fighting rats in a basement. Then, in the desert you fight some sort of desert rats. But there's also a few desert leapords, or some kind of cat creature, there. But, from what movies I've seen of the MMORPG, it controls completely like Final Fantasy XI, which is what I meant. But I do like that you can see all the enemies on the screen, like in Chrono Trigger or Chrono Cross. I just don't like how they incorporated a real time movement system with a turn based battle system. It doesn't mesh very well, in my opinion.
Actually, if I remember correctly, you do fight against some tough soldiers at the very beginning and then a boss. So, it very much follows the FF model.

I popped in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES today. I made it up to Area 4 before I ran out of continues. Darn. I have never beaten that game, actually. In fact, that was the furthest I had ever made it. Maybe I'll have better luck next time.
Man, Raphael sucks.

Don't call Zangief a monstrosity. Or a 'monstronsity' for that matter. He'll bear hug you until you bleed from your ears.

Oh, I just remembered something else.
I have a bunch of old FR games for the PC. Old dungeon hacks, but...meh. Eye of the Beholder (1-3), Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, Pools of Darkness, Gateway of the Savage Frontier, Treasures of the Savage Frontier, Hillsfar, Blood and Magic, Menzoberranzan, and Dungeon Hack. Whew.
Anyway, they're too old to run on my computer. At least, that's my theory. Anyone know a way I can play them?

DOSBox and VDMS. Your two best friends when it comes to abandonware.

I don't know what those are. Or what abandonware means...

www.abandonia.com/index2.phpStart here, it's the bee's knees of abandonware sites. Go to the FAQ and you'll find some information you need, including a link to the DOSbox guide, etc.

Okay, this is weird. I made it through the first level of Eye of the Beholder. But just before I can descend the ladder into the second level, a message will pop up.
It reads, "On the page with this symbol" and shows a picture of some random item in the game (weapon, armor, etc.). Then it says "Find Line X, Enter Word X". Where "X" is a random number each time.
It doesn't seem to matter what I type. After trying 2-3 times, the entire game just crashes.
What the hell?

Buh? Uh, no. It didn't come with one. All 13 games came together on two disks, it was called Gamefest: Forgotten Realm Classics.
