"A foul and unnatural thing, whatever it is," Roshek says. "Now, let's have a look at that cask." He puts away his weapons and strides over to the cask to look it over.

"Do you think it's worth anything?" Daos asks.

Kevril leans over Rax' shoulder to get a look at whatever is in the cask. To Daos' question, he replies, "We'll never know if we don't look, friend Daos."

"I suppose so," Daos agrees with a nod. He then patiently waits to see what their efforts yield.

The tapped cask when examined further appears to be full of air, likely the bandits drank the contents long ago or perhaps it merely evaporated over time.

"Well, that's disappointing. But not entirely unexpected," Daos admits.

Tristen remains focused on the unopened doors at the end of the hall, bow still half-drawn

"Ah well, much ado about nothing then," Roshek sighs. "One more set of doors in this corridor, and then back to the main hall, eh?"

"Right," Daos says. He takes up position in the back of the group and readies his sling for an attack.

"Narya, will you check the door for traps and locks? Kevril - let's open the doors together once we know it's safe."

Old BarracksNarya does the usual check on the remaining double doors and they are not locked or trapped. The doors are opened and inside you see A giant lizard is in the south end of the room near an intact chest. The ruined room appears to have once been a barracks. One might wonder what lies in the intact chest that appears to still have a lock on it. The lizard sees the doors open and flicks it's tongue as it smells the groups scent, the giant lizard blocks off the chest but otherwise makes no move as the group looks in from the hallway through the open door. === Would a lizard this size seem like an unnatural thing in this region similar to the giant frogs? And if so, would be considered a legitimate Target for a Rangers animal empathy ability?

(ooc: I imo would say in a ruin in the forest of this "area" large reptiles, amphibians, and other of that nature are not entirely unnatural. I wouldn't entirely think them a common thing for a Ranger to use that on but it is worth a shot.)

Tristen motions for the others to hold and move back into the side room so they are not blocking the hallway. Slowly, deliberately he puts away his bow. Once the others have moved (if they in fact do so) he cautiously steps into the room with the lizard. The Ranger moves immediately to the north so he is not blocking the only apparent exit from the creature. He walks beside the back wall, watching the large reptile in a passive, non-threatening manner. Gradually he does his best to move nearer in a peaceful way, though showing no fear and not yet coming in range of the beast.
The elf attempts to convey that he bears no ill-will. He gauges the creature's reaction to see if it is at all interested in leaving via the hallway or if it is steadfastly blocking the chest no matter what.
==== Going for the Ranger Animal Empathy ploy here to see if he can improve the Lizard's attitude and hopefully get it to wander off.
If it doesn't seem interested in leaving, he will take some meat ration and see if he can lead it away from the chest with the lure of food (but from a safe distance)

Daos holds off on making any hostile moves, waiting to see if Tristen can tame the beast and send it away first. However, he keeps his sling at the ready in case this doesn't work.
